'Big Brother' Host Julie Chen Addresses Aaryn's Racist Remarks

The current season of Big Brother has ignited a lot of debate and criticism over several contestants who have said racist, homophobic, and sexist remarks that have been captured on the show’s live 24/7 feed.

Three contestants – Aaryn, GinaMarie, and Spencer – have already been reprimanded by their jobs back at home, though they have no idea yet as they have no communication with the world outside of the house

Host Julie Chen has been silent on the matter so far, but she has spoken out during a live taping of The Talk on Monday (July 8).

“I have to be honest, it stung,” Julie said (via ET Online). “Those things, in my opinion … it felt mean-spirited. It felt ugly and it felt mean.”

“When I first found out that Aaryn, who is a 22-year-old girl, made anti-gay, anti-black and anti-Asian comments, I have to be honest, the Asian ones hit me the most. It stung. I took it personally,” Julie continued. “I’m a human being. The really sad part, it took me back to the ’70s when I was growing up in Queens and I was 7-years-old getting bullied, being called a chink. I thought, ‘Wow, I haven’t heard comments like that [in years].’ The year is 2013. I felt ignorant, there are still people in the country who feel and act that way? Yes there [are]. It made me sad. She’s 22 and she’s college educated.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK of the racism going on in the Big Brother house?

I couldn’t have been more happier last night when BB decided to air some of the heinous comments being said in the house this year. I understand why they have chosen not to remove the houseguests that have made the bigoted remarks but at least CBS is doing the right thing by showing the world the true colors of some of the players on this seasons Big Brother.

    Rebecca Says:

If CBS actually cared and was actually upset about the comments then they would pulled her from the show . They did not have to keep her on the show. They could have chosen to pull her. They decided not to which tells me its all about ratings.

No need for you to feel ignorant, it’s the girl who made those comments that should.

@Rebecca: They can’t remove Aaryn from the house because she is not the only one that has said racist, homophobic, or misogynistic comments. If they removed Aaryn they would have to remove all of the other players that have made comments which would destroy the entire season of BB.

I’m happy to read of Julie’s feelings, I know most want instant actions like removing them from the show.. not sure how that would effect the rest of the show after a week but it would be great to not have to tolerate them for the rest of the season, I too am offended at the morals and attitudes of these houseguest..As a Black american watching this show I”m asked why do I watch it..I have for 5 years now. I will not let narrow minded people ruin it for me..

@Asha: Yeah, the show would be over in two weeks if they ejected everyone who said something bigoted.

These people are put in a competitive situation and you never know what to expect. The show will have a very short life if you bring in contestants who will be fired from outside jobs and have no place to go back to when the show is over, or they are evicted from “the house”. It is ridiculous to place them in this kind of situation, then have the host of the show be a big old crybaby if they say something she doesn’t like. Let her without sin cast the first stone. I imagine that Chen woman has committed faux pas in the past, although now she is trying to project a goody-goody two shoes image of being perfect and never saying anything impolite or rude about or to anyone else. I hate crybabies and will not watch the show again.

@James Powell: “I will not watch the show again”…you seem like a bigger crybaby than you’re claiming Julie Chen to be

In my opinion this shouldnt be going on at all. Having racism and bullying going on in a television show that anyone should watch, including smaller children should not be permitted. When dealing with racism, if you feel the way you do, you can by all means, but do not put it on live television where you can have an affect on a growing child life. Its just not fair to anybody.

    Anna Says:

The fact that she’s college-educated is unfortunately irrelevant. At 30, I decided to go back to school and started law school in Canada, surrounded by people in their early 20s. Since there were black, East-Asian and Asian people in the program, people were cautious to say anything about these minorities. However, different tune for Native American people! I couldn’t believe my ears and I had the same reaction as Julie Chen: “You’re educated, you’re supposed to know more than your ancestors, whatever.” The sadder part is that the people making the offensive remarks not only weren’t even aware that some of their classmates were Natives in part. Racism is not dead; it’s just quietly passed down nowadays.

I used to love Aaryn till she made those racist remarks. Now we have seen the truth in her. Stupid dumb silly bunny woman. What a waste of space.

everytime i see the word aaryn, i think it’s misspelled for aryan

    Susan Says:

Shame on you BB and CBS! They should have been kicked off the show but no. Ratings take priority over issue’s like racism, correct?? You may as well agree because that is exactly the message you are sending by not taking any actions against these 3 people individuals.

    Doughboy Says:

I am happy they are talking about it. I’m wondering when these people get evicted (Aaryn, Gina Marie) how will Julie handle having to do exit interview. Also are the evicted houseguest not required to do TV interviews on The View, or CBS morning show?
    that could be interesting

  21. 21
    Nicole Says:

Listen guys…they were wrong. However..I think it is great they are not being ousted from the show because that is not the point of BB. The point is to live in a bubble 24/7 with cameras constant. This will be a FANTASTIC wake up call to those contestants (and hopefully to American) that this is who they are. If it wasn’t it wouldn’t have been said. Aaryn and the other two are probably so used to talking like this that it is time they have a mirror put up to themselves so they can see exactly the type of person they truly are, not who they think they are. What better lesson to learn…I say keep digging your grave and you will come out seeing the things you need to do to change yourself to be the person you thought you were. Like Oprah said…When someone SHOWS you who they are, believe them!

    Meena Says:

I feel it is important to note that I am black. With that being said, I don’t get taking it personally when a racist person says something about your race. I don’t give a rat’s azz what the chick on Big Brother or any other racist person thinks about me.

    melissa Says:

they are only voicing what many others are afraid to say out loud for the exact reasons they will now suffer – loss of jobs and friendships, ridicule, judgments, etc. more people than not are still racist, but if you’re secure as an individual, then comments by others rarely matter
