Oscars: ‘Fruitvale Station’ Kicks Off Strongest Group Of African-American Contenders In Years

    By PETE HAMMOND | Wednesday July 10, 2013 @ 3:23pm PDT

Last month the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences took great strides in order to bring more diversity to its membership. Now will that effort affect the actual Oscar race itself? Certainly this year distributors, particularly The Weinstein Company and Fox Searchlight, are going to be giving the Academy every opportunity to put some diversity into that race, especially in terms of a major African- American presence. Beginning with this Friday’s platformed Weinstein release of the widely acclaimed Sundance and Cannes award winner, Fruitvale Station there is a highly promising lineup of films that seriously depict the Black experience to be released in the second half of 2013. And I am not talking about Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas.
This group of movies, which also includes the increasingly-controversial The Butler (8/16- Weinstein), 12 Years A Slave (10/18- Searchlight), Mandela: A Long Walk To Freedom (11/29 – Weinstein), Black Nativity (11/27 – Searchlight), Blue Caprice starring Isaiah Washington (IFC – 9/13), the recently -released documentary Twenty Feet From Stardom (Radius-TWC) and (far less likely) even the long-delayed Winnie Mandela (Image Entertainment) starring Jennifer Hudson and Terrence Howard now being released in September, provide a bountiful opportunity to let the Academy show off its new spirit of diversity, not that they have been completely dormant in that area in recent years. Of course 2012′s Beasts Of The Southern Wild made the most recent Best Picture cut and won its 9 year old star Quvenzhane Wallis a Best Actress nomination. And Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar winning Original Screenplay for another 2012 Best Pic nominee, Django Unchained had a unique take on slavery. Two years ago the box office success of The Help propelled it towards a Best Picture nomination and acting nods for Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer, the latter winning for Best Supporting Actress. And just four years ago Precious won a couple of key Oscars for Supporting Actress Monique and screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher as well as Best Picture and Directing (for Lee Daniels) nominations.

    (…)

Director Steve McQueen’s (Shame) 12 Years A Slave is definitely a highly-anticipated title, and a centerpiece of Fox Searchlight’s Oscar campaign this year thanks to a cast that, in addition to Ejiofor, includes Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Alfre Woodard, Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Kenneth Williams among many others. Based on the autobiography by Solomon Northup it tells his story with great emotion I am told by one person who saw an early cut. Searchlight also has the Christmas-themed musical drama, Black Nativity based on the Langston Hughes play. It comes from director Kasi Lemmons with another starry cast including Whitaker, Hudson, Angela Bassett and Mary J. Blige. Between this film, his starring role in The Butler and as a producer of Fruitvale Station, it appears Whitaker is going to be especially visible this season. He’s also been rumored as the potential star of director Paul Greengrass’ Memphis, the long-gestating story of the final days of Martin Luther King, which my colleague Mike Fleming initially reported is finding renewed life (thanks to Veritas and Wild Bunch after Universal dropped it) in an industry that thankfully seems willing to take serious African American-themed projects and give them the respect they deserve.

    Oscar, are you listening?

Angelina Jolie touches down in a private jet at LAX with her sons looking the picture of health following trip to Hawaii
———————————————————————————————–By Chris | the juice – 42 minutes ago
    -
Angelina Jolie has been spotted touching down in LAX with two of her children in tow looking relaxed and healthy following a trip to Hawaii. The 38-year-old film star, who underwent a double mastectomy earlier this year, looked the picture of health as she touched down with Pax, 9, and Maddox, 11.
    -
Dressed in a black top and matching jeans, Angelina clearly knew how to dress for flying, finishing off her look with a comfy pair of flip flops. Son Pax also brought along a friend for the flight, a giant purple teddy bear. Maddox meanwhile carried his own case down the plane steps, rocking a beanie hat and aviators favoured by dad Brad Pitt.
    -
The Salt star was all smiles as she left the private plane with her sons, soon to be reunited with the rest of her brood. Angelina was returning from a trip to Hawaii where she had been scouting out locations for her latest directorial project Unbroken. It is thought Angelina and Brad will move to the tropical island when filming begins for eight weeks.
    -
And in a connection we never thought we’d see coming, Angelina shares a common interest with Tulisa. The star has hired the former X Factor judges’ ex boyfriend Jack O’Connell to play the lead in the film portraying World War II hero Lou Zamperini. Jack is thought to be meeting up with Angelina soon with the film slated for release in December 2014.

It may only be a teddy bear, but it’s seen more places and faces than most will in their lifetimes.
And it seems Angelina Jolie’s son Pax has become inseparable from his favourite purple soft toy as he was seen travelling with it once more on Wednesday. The actress jetted into Los Angeles airport with her brood after another jet setting trip which saw her relax in Hawaii.

Review: World War Z Delivers Thrills and Action
    —————————————————————————
    -
By Ryan Maddux and Andy Stuckey Daily News Greensburg Daily News The Greensburg Daily News Thu Jul 11, 2013,
    -
This week we turn a critical eye to the Brad Pitt zombie apocalyptic thriller, World War Z. (PG-13). Pitt stars as a former United Nations investigator who is sent around the world to find out the origin of the zombie outbreak. Marc Forster directs. Ryan: Seeped in a myriad of bad press of out-of-control budgets and haphazard-appearing reshoots, the big-budget World War Z had all the makings of a summer box-office dud. But interestingly enough World War Z is a completely serviceable summer tent-pole film. Although the narrative feels like a video-game, most of the time (with Brad Pitt’s character jumping from level to level) the movie actually does a good job presenting its large-scale action in a personable way. Most summer films, especially the big ones of this season (Iron Man 3, Star Trek and Man of Steel) exponentially dial up its action as the film progresses. One of the things that I liked about World War Z was how it dialed down its action in the second part of its second act. Instead of getting louder and more out of control as the film moves along, World War Z went small and the payoff worked on a more emotionally fulfilling level.
    -
It did seem that we were being prepared for a movie that was much worse than World War Z actually turned out to be. Apart from all of the stories of shooting woes, I was simply skeptical of another zombie movie. The genre is just about played out for the time being, and I assumed this would be the last straw for me. Surprisingly, World War Z gives the zombie-apocalypse a relatively fresh treatment, examining it on a global scale. Generally zombie movies follow the template of Night of the Living Dead, focusing on an isolated group of survivors. WWZ has Brad Pitt literally circling the globe to show how the zombie pandemic is decimating the world population.
Ryan: Clearly much of the film’s ability to stay afloat should be credited to Brad Pitt.
    -
Andy: On one hand he’s the stereotypical hero—the reluctant, retired family man. But on the other hand he’s also the anti-summer hero in that he thinks before he acts (he does not shoot first and ask questions later). This kind of introspective summer leading man is refreshing. Brad Pitt’s all-in performance goes a long way in buying into the zombie mayhem in the film. I’m not the biggest fan of zombie culture (in books, television or the movies) but World War Z hits (most of) the right notes in what a summer blockbuster can be.
    -
Andy: Praise must be given to Brad Pitt for carrying the film. There are several obligatory summer action scenes that feature Brad Pitt running, but for the most part he is impressively low-key. Many of his most powerful moments come with no action and no dialogue. This is rare in an action movie, and for good reason. In the hands of a lesser actor, these scenes would range from boring to awkward, and would likely derail a big-budget action movie. But Brad Pitt shines in a movie that gives us very few characters to care about. World War Z is an entertaining summer flick that manages to bring a new perspective to the zombie sub-genre, earning a respectable B.

@anustin: Good morning my dear Anustin. Thanks for the shout out. Anustin it’s so good to see Angie looking so healthy after having major surgery, 8 hours under the knife, and she looks like a million Bucky five months later. Angle is a strong woman both mentally and physically. I cannot imagine how she does it. I sent my shout out on the other page but I’ll wish all the fans a beautiful and blessed day again.

Has anyone read the ‘Unbroken’ book yet?

I just want to get other people’s perspective and opinion on this book. :)

I just read a sample from Amazon and the reviews are immensely amazing….. So of course i brought it on my kindle! Literally cant wait to read it during the summer and i know after watching Jolie’s directing debut for ‘The Land of Blood and Honey’ and was just thoroughly impressed by it, so i have no doubt she will do great justice for this book.

I just read on CB that Sad Spook/Ticky set a wedding date for December. One person commented that they should set a date for the divorce also, lol. The story is saying that Ticky is not making any compromise, squigs is the one compromising about where and when. I guess Ticky has not learned her lesson that in marriage it’s a 50/50 coming together and making compromise. For one don’t believe there will be a wedding, we will see come December what will be the next excuse.

Deconstructing The ‘Most Pro-Israel’ Zombie Movie Ever Made
    ————————————————————————————————
In ‘World War Z,’ Israelis Have Strategy for Dealing With Invaders
    =
Only the Strong Survive: In ‘World War Z,’ starring Brad Pitt, Israelis protect themselves from the zombie invasion by creating a massive security wall.
    =

    By Doni Bloomfield
    Published July 11, 2013, issue of July 19, 2013.
    -
If you were to judge only by what’s been said in the media firestorm it’s left in its wake, you might assume that the new Brad Pitt zombie extravaganza, “World War Z,” is so pro-Israel that by the time the credits roll, the audience members will be singing “Hatikva” just to inoculate themselves against the undead. The Times of Israel declared “World War Z” “the greatest piece of cinematic propaganda for Israel since Otto Preminger’s ‘Exodus.’” Al-Jazeera quoted several critics of Israel lambasting the film for defending “Israel’s apartheid wall.”
    -
Jeffrey Goldberg, a columnist for Bloomberg View, hailed “World War Z” as “the most pro-Israel movie ever made” (though he added, “Or at the very least the most pro-Israel zombie movie”), and left-wing blogger Jesse Benjamin derided it as “zombie hasbara” (literally “explaining,” a Hebrew euphemism for propaganda). Paramount Pictures, the main studio backer of “World War Z,” was sufficiently worried that in the Turkish version, the subtitles reading “Israel” were replaced with “the Middle East.”But the truth is, the producers of “World War Z” are not shills for Israel. While the movie does use Israel as an important symbol, it’s simply one of the more conspicuous pieces in a larger argument: to survive in this world requires a willingness to dispense with humanitarian niceties and take some ugly actions. (Spoiler alert!)
    -
The movie begins with the simultaneous collapse of cities across the globe as the zombie infestation spreads and our hero, Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt doing his best Bruce Willis impression), seeks safety for his family. Soon Lane, recently retired from the United Nations, is whisked off to learn that only two countries, North Korea and Israel, have so far survived the zombie onslaught: the Koreans by knocking out every citizen’s teeth, and the Israelis by constructing a massive security wall around Jerusalem (sound familiar?).
    -
Once he is in the Holy Land, Lane learns that Israel’s survival is due to the Mossad’s policy of the “10th Man”: For every potential threat, one out of 10 men in the agency assigned to the case needs to take it seriously, no matter how far-fetched it may seem. The head of the Mossad, the 10th man investigating the zombie threat, managed to seal off the whole country just in the nick of time. Israel is compassionately admitting all non-zombie humans, but this proves less than strategically sound. As the crowd swells, Palestinians, secular Israelis and ultra-Orthodox Jews join together to sing a song of peace, attracting the attention of the outside zombie hoard, which (taking aliyah a little too literally) overruns the wall and destroys Jerusalem.
Most commentators have read this sequence as singing the praise of the Jewish people for their brilliant foresight and blaming the bungling peaceniks for letting down their guard. But this is only a small part of the film’s endorsement of a merciless, paranoid approach to danger.
    -
The only way to survive is through brutal amputation: When an Israeli soldier is bitten, Lane saves her by unhesitatingly slicing off her hand; when a plane full of civilians is being taken over by zombies, Lane hurls a grenade and the explosion kills virtually everyone, tossing zombie and non-zombie alike out 10,000 feet above ground. In the film’s climax we learn how to defeat the undead: Lane infects himself with typhoid, rendering him uninteresting to the zombies looking for healthy prey.Time and again it is those like Lane, the North Koreans and, at first, the Israelis who can overlook suffering now for survival until tomorrow — who can abandon blind hope and unblinkingly swallow the bitter pill of near total self-interest.The critique of hope goes even deeper than that. The scene in Jerusalem is eerily reminiscent of an episode in the Book of Revelation in which 144,000 Jews are singled out to survive the Apocalypse; gathering on Mount Zion with “a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language,” these chosen few sing “a new song before the throne [of God].” (New International Version, Book of Revelation 7:3–9, 14:1–3). (Page 3 of 3)
    -
But instead of being saved by the grace of God, as in Revelation, those of the singing multitude in “World War Z” are punished for their faith by being viciously turned into a mass of raging zombies. The Star of David may flutter in the breeze, Israel Defense Forces helicopters may swoop confidently through the skies, but in the end, Israel is nothing special, just another group of chumps too compassionate to survive. To quote Tom Lehrer, “‘The Lord’s our shepherd,’ says the Psalm / but just in case we better get a bomb.”
    -
The movie’s argument comes directly from the novel on which it’s based. In an interview with The New York Times, the novel’s author, Max Brooks, explained that he wrote it in response to the fearful post-9/11 world: “There’s been some really scary stuff that’s been happening — 9/11, Iraq, Afghanistan, Katrina… global warming, global financial meltdown, bird flu, swine flu, SARS…. People really feel like the system’s breaking down.” The world, to Brooks, is constantly full of threats, and if he had his way, his books would be in the self-help section. If the Israelis are on to anything, the movie shows it when they think that any danger, no matter how small, is quite possibly cataclysmic and demands our sharpest attention and dispassionate calculation. To put it bluntly, the only Jewish virtue trumpeted in this film is neuroticism.

Malala Day: Let Us Turn The Dream Into Reality
    ——————————————————————-
    Posted: 07/11/2013 8:41 am
    -
July 12th marks the historic occasion that Malala Yousafzai will be joined by students from over 80 countries to lead the ‘United Nations Youth Takeover’ — a youth assembly with a global call to action. The message is loud and clear — quality ‘education for all’ is a basic human right. I recently found myself in the middle of Africa’s largest slum — Kibera — where I visited a school in which 75 percent of children happen to be orphans or brought up by a single parent, something that I was assured is not unique to this school or to the local catchment. As jarring as this statistic is, the thing that brought a tear to my eyes was that I was told that the vast majority — 95 percent — of children who I was interacting with came to school without having had a meal that morning, and many hadn’t had anything since their school lunch was served the day before. The hot breakfast I had that morning immediately flashed up in my mind and made me reflect on why these situations persist.
    -
We have the intelligence, the resources, the expertise to obliterate global poverty, and can make a fundamental difference to the prosperity of all — especially the underprivileged like those in the Kibera school. So, why haven’t we? I lead a not-for-profit organization — the Varkey GEMS Foundation — that has financial commitments of $100m to help improve education outcomes globally. We are helping to build a block of classrooms in Kibera, which will keep kids in school and learning when it’s pouring with rain outside. We funded midday meals in schools in India through our partnership with Akshaya Patra Foundation. We have also worked with UNHCR to provide a large number of school uniforms to Syrian children who are living in refugee camps in Lebanon.
    -
All of these, and more, help enroll and keep children in schools, but what needs to happen is focus on improving standards in classrooms. So, our flagship intervention — a low cost, high impact teacher training programme — seeks to train 250,000 teachers in classroom pedagogy over the next 10 years. By next Easter, we will have trained over 5,000 teachers in Uganda and started the programme elsewhere.
    -
So, given that recent statistics show that progress in ensuring all children attend school has slowed, and that the bulk of these reside in sub-Saharan Africa, I visited Ghana a few weeks back to take a look for myself at the work done by Professor James Tooley of Newcastle University on low-cost private schooling. We visited three schools on the outskirts of Accra which demonstrated that for a cost of $150 per child, every child can be in school, with books, school uniforms and a piping hot meal at lunch. These two examples — our own low cost teacher-training intervention and James Tooley’s low cost private schools are examples of what we can all get behind to improve the chances of millions of children all over the world.
    -
Malala reminds us of the injustice girls face, but more than anything else, her story speaks to me about the desire of children to learn and dream about better futures for themselves and their communities. Malala said: “I want every girl, every child educated.” Let’s use this day to emphasize the need to innovate, invest in scaling solutions that have been proven to work, put aside ideological difference, and create a true dialogue between all stakeholders that firmly center on the student and their dreams.

I know for a fact that they have difficulty grasping REALITY even on a good day let alone a bad one, because coming from Tickys No1 fans you know the “Two headed Serpent that is “Tamshiiter/JoeShiiter”, Don’t laugh but dint you know that “Unbroken” is a figment of our imagination, Louis Zamperini “NEVER” existed, Oscar winner Angelina Jolie “ISNT” the Director, Oscar winner’s Joel & Ethan Cohen’s “ARNT” the writers, Oscar Nominated Roger Deakins “ISNT” the director of Photography, Universal Studios “HASN’T” just “ANNOUNCED” the release date as December 25th 2014, all of this despite the fact being announced by the reputable industry site “Deadline” . Oh no no no its all a figment of our imagination……..Oh hang on busted, I think I heard a hissing sound ….Oh not to worry its only hot air coming out of the two headed serpents “BALLS” because
“Tamshiiter/JoeShiiter” IT does claim to me a “MAN” doesn’t IT, so I guess its got Biitch slapped in the balls YET AGIAIN lmao happy days.
Busted I need to close this window all this Screaming from the ocean is doing my head in.

Good morning WTM How are you or should I say where were you yesterday? I missed you. Last I heard was the two headed serpent TamsShiite/JoeShiiter was getting air pumped into its balls as they pretty much have been busted & deflated to the core , you know since Brad’s had World Wide Box Office Success with WWZ & Angies Unbroken has got all Oscar Winning crew working WITH HER. Are you joining me in doing an Irish Jig lol?

No wonder Tickys has NEVER been seen with her in-laws to be ,it’s because all the family and relations love Angelina Jolie, Squiggs included oh that’s not a good sign when your In-Laws to be cant even stand the sight of you photoshopped or not. Also have you seen the Stalking Biich has brought out her FARTWater ad out how desperate is she ok don’t answer that I know the answer to that pretty desperate lol. She always stalks wither FARTWater when Angie doing something biitch is so obvious in her stalking.

@Phool.: Phool, did you see the inspiration for dumb water? The clouds, lol. Ticky print ad says, “look up in the clouds thats where we get inspiration for dumb water, vapid, distiller purity”. That quote is on the caption above her head to the right side. It’s plain to see is you go to CB site.

You were mentioning the nighttime vampire Trolls i’ve named them the two headed serpents that go in the name of
Tamshiiter/Joeshiiter spewing venoms at every one they are a pair of REPTIALS. I see their idol has slithered out from her hole stalking yet again stalking Angie with her Fartwater, what a joke Ticky is honestly I wish media would call her out on these pre-planed stalking of the jolie pitts. And know she’s pulled out a December wedding hmm what does that coincide with I wonder?

    .
The media know why Pax is carrying that bag, but they don’t publish it because it makes them look bad for buying ratzi pix of a little kid who just wants them to leave him and his family alone. They’re culpable, so no, they’re not going to bash the ratzi for annoying and scarring a 9 1/2 y.o. kid.

super random but Clooney being in the news made me remember when he said this:
Clooney said to Vanity Fair magazine, “I see them together and they look very content, which makes me happy. I’ve met her a few times. She is a very beautiful woman and very clued up.”
those comments were made Aug 2005. Also I had no idea that Angie’s pal Nicholas Kristof went to Sudan in 2009 with Clooney. Its amazing how much connections she has, Ok random thoughts of the day lol

It seems pretty insensitive to me to do a comedy about drug smuggling as funny given what is happening in that corrupt, dangerous world. Aniston has no common sense and another thiughtless comedy manipulated so she can take her clothes off again. Which it seems lots of 40 + actresses are doing these days. Bless Angie and her new venture.

lol im going down memory lane, remember when ticky tried to be friends with Angie’s pal Jeffrey Sachs bwhahahha

Aniston greeted Sachs – famous for his philanthropic work with Angelina Jolie – with a warm hug, and the two sat in intense conversation for more than 20 minutes. (Later, Aniston and Mayer discreetly held hands under the table while catching up with Cox and Arquette.)

“[Jen] is absolutely wonderful,” Sachs told PEOPLE later. “She knows that she reaches so many people and is eager to contribute in many ways. It was absolutely fantastic to speak with her.”

As for some of his other celebrity supporters – Jolie and Aniston’s ex, Brad Pitt – the author of Millennium Promise offered glowing praise.

“They’re so much fun and so committed,” he said. “Angie is just boundless energy, creativity, endlessly so … And Brad is so committed as well with what he’s been doing in New Orleans on environmental issues. It’s phenomenal.”

@Phool.: Good morning Phool! How are you today? Sorry for the late reply… Things have been terribly busy at work today. I replied to you on the thread yesterday morning… Idk if you saw it or not ( my apologies). Tampax pearl looks like he lost its shore last night again, poor troll, always on the losing end lol. Tampax pearl spends its whole night trying to find anything negative about the JP’s. the only negative things it finds are from the click ticky hens. Or Huvesy who plants the stories lol.

As for the polluted water ad— this bish is hella delusional. I see polluted water all the time at the store, on sale. Nobody buys her advertised water lmfao. I have never went to the store and see tickys water sold out. Me thinks ticky should just save herself the embarrassment and stop advertising polluted water. Also, why is aveeno on sale now? I guess consumers saw the fraud who was advertising their products lmao. All I know is the JP wine is selling like hotcakes.

@YIB: Did you contact him? There is a contact button at the bottom of the page.

  • were the morons

@Bambi: learn how to spell troll. You are so hateful of Angie, yet she will never even give a fvck in your honor. Keep spouting off about her, and see how far that gets you. At the end of the day, Angie is rich, successful with a family who loves her. You, on the other hand, will still be fat and ugly.
