The fifth season of Breaking Bad picks up just after Walt and Jesse’s successful plot to murder drug kingpin Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito). Gus’ office laptop, containing key information that could destroy Jesse and Walt is picked up by police, and the duo, along with security and business guru Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks), destroy the laptop using an industrial electromagnet that sabotages the police station’s evidence room.

Enlisting the help of their lawyer Saul Goodman (Odenkirk), Jesse and Walt begin their meth business once again, this time as a front with a local pest company.

When their methylamine flow is disrupted, Walter, Jesse, and Mike rob a train filled with the valuable substance essential to creating their product. However, during the heist, a little kid comes by, and gets shot by accomplice Todd (Jesse Plemons), who is an employee for the pest company.

As the DEA gets more suspicious towards Mike and his guys, many of whom are in prison already, and with the death of the child, he and Jesse decide to quit the business for good. Mike and Jesse try and sell their portion of the methylamine to a distributor, but Walt puts a wrench in their plans by refusing to sell, and uses his position as “Heisenberg” to cut a deal with the distributor. Walt hires Todd as his new cook when Jesse refuses to come back.

Meanwhile Mike is about to get caught by the DEA and goes on the run. He meets up with Walt to get a bag of supplies and Walt impulsively shoots Mike when he won’t give up the names of Gus’s former employees who might talk. Walt realizes that Lydia Rodarte-Quayle (Laura Fraser), an executive with Madrigal Electromotive GmbH, the parent company of Gus’ Los Pollos Hermanos, has the names of the men, and leaves Mike to die.

Walt and Lydia meet up, and strike a deal: Walt will not kill her if she helps him distribute the meth oversees. They also arrange for Todd’s uncle, a prison bigwig, and his gang to kill Gus’s former employees.

This deal gives Walt so much money, he finally accepts the pleas from his wife Skylar (Gunn) and quits the business as well.

The final scene in part one of the fifth season shows Hank (Dean Norris) in the bathroom at Walt and Skylar’s house. On the toilet, he finds a Walt Whitman poetry book idedicated to “WW” from “GB”. Hank then has a flashback to a conversation with Walt regarding the initials from the investigation months prior, and makes the connection that “GB” is Gale Boetticher, a murdered former employee of Gus’s, and Walt could very well be the infamous Heisenberg.
