'Fifty Shades of Grey' Movie Casting - Producer Explains Choice

The internet has been abuzz all day since it was revealed that Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson landed the lead roles in the upcoming movie Fifty Shades of Grey.

Producer Dana Brunetti has now sent his Twitter followers some explanation into the process for choosing the actors to play the roles.

“There is a lot that goes into casting that isn’t just looks. Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actor, etc,” Dana tweeted. “So if your favorite wasn’t cast, then it is most likely due to something on that list. Keep that in mind while hating and keep perspective.”

E.L. James, the author of the bestselling book series has also sent her fans a message following the casting news she revealed.

“To all the supporters, lovers and haters – thank you so much for the passion that you have for this project. You all rock. All of you. ♡” she tweeted.

They’re taking themselves too seriously. Don’t forget we’re talking about a terrible story that was terribly written.

    Adrienne Says:

I’m kinda glad they addressed this. Too many crazy fans obsessed with their favorite actors not getting the role without knowing the aforementioned criteria. Your favorite actors do not quality for every single role out there!

    Veep Says:

Great casting. They shouldn’t lose their nerves because of the backlash online; happens all the time.
Yes, crap book but they’re still going to make gazillions from it. Why? See: Stephenie Meyer and Twilight as example of crappy books = crappy movies = mega mega bucks.

    Rachel Says:

Thank God Matt Bomer is not associated with this mess. He has always been too good for it and now it is a complete train weck!

    Sheyenne Says:

It isn’t that serious. Just because someone looks like they should play the part doesn’t mean they should play the part. I never thought of Charlie as Christian Grey but he is a great actor. I’ve never seen Dakota act but they saw something they liked. Either way I’m excited about the movie. People always have something negative to say about the book but that’s the thing … it’s a book. If you don’t like the series and don’t want to see the movie fine but some people like the series and are happy about the movie. Those are the people they picked so deal with it.

OMG :( Batt Bomer and Alexis Bledel….

    Jane Says:

Pretty pathetic casting choices. In any case I will not be watching this movie. Bleh……….

    Ruth Says:

The book was so overrated and boring – I hope that the film is better. More importantly, can these people actually act?

    Bella Says:

NAY sorry but the guy looks like sandra bulock´s ex husband and the girl i can say… nothing sorry but i don´t like it at all

    GGGive Says:

who cares?? why do you mind seeing him naked? he is hot

    Overmind Says:

Well, if the movie features a bunch of criminal gangs with giant robots duking out with each other S&M style, I will watch the hell out of the movie.

But wait…that will surely give Harry Knowles a hard-on and E L James fans won’t want to anything to do with nerds…

Kinda poor marketing strategy for the people behind this film. I mean, there was so much mad hype about this book being made into film last year and it took them so long to find a director and round up their cast. Now that people seem to forgot about it, they announce their cast which is majority a disappointment (and some extent, even angered and repulsed) especially to the fans. If they had gotten actors who AT LEAST resemble to the people’s common ideas about christian and ana, they might get that massive hype again. Anyway, who am I kidding? These are just my thoughts. Obviously, I know nothing much about the industry but let’s just hope that they will be able to produce a great film (perhaps greater interpretation of the books) and not some cheesy cheap film. The sex is already cheesy, try to make the film otherwise.

    stupid book

    Maria Says:

it’s gonna suck. just you watch. Dakota Johnson is blonde and looks older regardless of age.

    Ash Says:

Disappointed with the casting. As per producer’s tweet, many factors were considered on the casting. Its safe to say that Charlie and Dakota are 2nd or 3rd choices for the roles since availability, and the desire to do the movie played a huge part on the casting.. Maybe their 1st choices for the roles wasn’t available to film it since the producers took so long to cast it.. Thank God Emilia Clarke is doing S4 of GoT while filming of this supposedly “romantic movie” takes place.. Many FSOG fans wanted her to be Anastasia…

    april Says:

nay! thought christian grey is handsome? the guy is plain looking with a big jaw…

  18. 18
    talia Says:

@Ash: how would you know who their first choices for the role were since there was never any talk by EL Jamesor anyone about who they would want to play to two main leads.

Going to use the twilight casting as an example here, twilight fans were outraged when C Hadwicke picked at the time an unknown british actor to play Edward but now 5 years on, twilights fans say rob was perfect for the role even the ones who initially were against him playing Edward

    L.P. Says:

Honestly, I feel that the producers were rather unprofessional about handling all the negativity that they were receiving from the public. Instead of repulsing and playing the sarcastic card by retweeting angry fans’ tweets and acknowledging the fact that there are “haters,” they should have just been humble and kept their mouths shut. They were just pouring more gasoline on the wildfire.

Besides, they probably already knew that they were going to receive a bunch of disappointed tweets because they casted two random actors who, might I add, portray absolutely NONE of the qualities and physical appearances from the characters in the books. The producers need to understand that their fans are heartbroken at the fact that these two actors look NOTHING like Christian and Ana. I mean, sure James wrote the books and no one knows the characters better than she does, but think about it. You wrote a worldwide best-selling trilogy and you’ve got MILLIONS of fans WORLDWIDE rooting for Bomer & Bledel or Cavill & Clarke.

Question: While you pointed out that Alexis Bledel and Matt Bomer were too old to play Ana and Christian, what made you think that Dakota and Charlie look any younger (or better)? Charlie is not ugly, but he is nowhere near as gorgeous as how James portrays him in the book. He looks like a 35-40 year old bad boy from the block, not a billionaire. And Dakota? She looks like she’s 35. Alexis may be 35 but she does not look a day older than 24 years old. Matt, same thing. Henry and Emilia, same thing.

Shouldn’t you foreshadow that the same MILLIONS of fans are the ones who will be spending their dollars to see YOUR movie? Don’t you want to be successful with your project, get nothing but AMAZING reviews and high box office numbers? I understand that casting is difficult and it doesn’t always work out the way everyone wants it to but at least give some acknowledgement to your fans that you TRIED to make us happy, that you CONSIDERED casting our favorites, not rub in our faces that you’re unprofessional producers who won’t give a crap about our criticism. What fans will you have left then?

I’m such a HUGE fan of the FSoG trilogy, I swear I’ve read the entire thing over 3 times. Many of us, when we read an intriguing book, like to picture and imagine how the characters look and act towards one another. If MILLIONS of people WORLDWIDE all shared the same interest of casting Bomer/Bledel or Cavill/Clarke as the stars, doesn’t that ring a bell? It’s all about making the fans happy because essentially that will determine if your movie will be a success or not.

An extremely disappointed and heartbroken fan.

    P.S. Ana doesn’t wear makeup.

    Chloe Says:

Let’s face it, no one else wanted to play in this movie so they had to go with the only ones who wanted to, which means ****** actors who have nothing to lose. “There is a lot that goes into casting that isn’t just looks” for a movie based mostly on what its main characters look like that is just a dumb excuse.

L.P. I second everything you said.

    ASIANS CAN READ MINDS!!!!!!!!! Says:

They can hear, and see what you’re visually thinking. This is the absolute complete truth!!!!!
Asians hide their mind reading abilities by completely expressionless faces so they don’t accidentally show facial expressions when people think things they don’t like, find funny, astonishing, etc, and Asians segregate so their not nearly as susceptible to that happening.
Asians also segregate, and are untalkative to avoid accidentally saying things that are similar to what people are thinking and going to say.
Try thinking, and visually picturing things that are as wild as you can when you are around Asians, and look for Asians who give people dirty/particular looks for what appears to be for completely no reason.

    say what Says:

Charlie Huhham is looking like a fat, bulky, old looking bully… and Dakota Johnson, she looks so damn plain being brunnete & even look much older than the 32 year old yet top/popular choice Alexis Bledel – WTFl!!!

    rach Says:

Oh get a grip people. There’s every chance Matt, Alexis, Henry, Emila, Ian etc etc didn’t want anything to do with this movie. They can’t force actors to do a project, what do you expect them to do? They can only use actors who want to be involved with the project! And you know they can dye hair etc etc.
