'Gravity' Breaks Box Office Records, Biggest October Opening!

Sandra Bullock and George Clooney‘s hot new movie Gravity has broken box office records with the biggest October opening weekend of all time!

The new film brought in $55.6 million over the weekend, boosted by its huge business in 3D theaters and great buzz from the very positive reviews. The previous biggest opening for October was Paranormal Activity 3 with $52.6 million.

Coming in second place over the weekend was the animated film Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 with $21.5 million, according to Deadline.

Third place went to Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck‘s new flick Runner Runner with a disappointing $7.9 million for the weekend. The film reportedly only cost $30 million to make though, so it could still recoup its investment.

Rounding out the top five were Hugh Jackman‘s Prisoners with $5.7 million and Chris Hemsworth‘s Rush with $4.5 million.

WHAT DID YOU SEE at the movies this weekend??

I went to see Don Jon. Good movie. Maybe I’m gonna go see Gravity later in the month. Everyone seems to like it a lot.

# 2

Spectacular film. There were moments when I was bored but visuals are stunning.

# 3

Way overrated film. I laughed at bad-luck-Bullock the whole time and slept midway through

# 4

Bullock – the biggest female movie star in the world?

# 5

Yes, cant wait to see it!! And so happy a movie with central lead as a female did so well, go Sandra, you rock!

# 6

Angelina Jolie was a FOOL for turning this movie down.

Thank god no one wanted to pay Skeletina $20 Million for her “acting” and she went to make her AMAZING and Oscar awarded movie In the Land of **** and Boredom instead. Sandra did an amazing job and deserves every upcoming nomination.

Sucks when you’re just in for the money, huh? Angelina is a money grabbin’ hoe and that’s it. Can’t wait to see her fish face when Sandra gets her second Oscar while she’s more irrelevant than ever.

@Lisa: @Lisa:

You’re an idiot. the media plays up that she turned t down..but the reason she turned it down is because she had her own movie.
George Clooney was not the first choice ..RDJ turned it down.
Asking for more money in Hollywood is the norm for an A Lister especially when the studio pockets most of the profits.
You must be insane to tink Bullock will receive an Oscar nod or Oscar when the buzz is out for Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett

Finally Angelina is getting her 2nd Oscar as she is being the Award an Oscar for her Humanitarian efforts.

Gravity cost 80M to make & this opening weekend alone, Domestic and Foreign its made almost 83M….. It’s broke a record sales amount for an October movie release. All reviews have been exceptional.

@Sam: @Lisa:
Angelina has 2 Oscars and still the highest paid actress
she doesn’t cares about Gravity BO

@Sweetness: Uh, there are a total of 5 nominations for Best Actress. Both Julia Roberts and Meryl Street will NOT be in the Lead category. And yes, Sandra will get a nomination for this. Get over it.

Who honestly expected a movie with Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake to make any money? They both can’t act.

@oh: Angelina has ONE oscar from about a hundred years ago.

@Lauren:

so..

why is she even being brought up. Some of you people need to get some serious help.

Actually Angelina was courted for this movie from the beginning. For several years, they even adjusted the script to woo for the role. She was the only female they saw playing this role for a long time. The script had more to do with it for Angie more than anything. If I am not mistaken it RDJ that turned down the role because he wanted $20million after the success of Iron Man. Angelina did not feel the script had enough depth and after WB came to her once they acquired it she still was not happy with the script and plus she had her own movie that was to be her directorial debut.

I have been following this from the get and you can actually go to the IMDB page for Angelina and find some of the articles, if not deleted because they are over 3 years old. The media always trying to find a negative towards Angelina instead of printing the truth. The fans of Gravity were really wanting Angelina to take on this project but it wasn’t for her.
So congrats to Sandra.

It’s not the first or last time a big worldwide movie star will turn down a role or pick the wrong role. It’s business.

This movie is soooooooo overrated. The visuals are fun, but there is no acting……….Sandra Bullock was boring. I do not miss too many movies, but this one I wish I had missed. Waste of time and money.

ladies – no need to shade Ms. Jolie. If part of her deal in starring in this film was $20M pay, then that’s her perogative. Besides I don’t think she could have pulled it off – Sandra was the right choice.

@Lovely:

agreed on this being the usual business of h’wood. One point of quibble – your post makes it sound her reason was artistic (script did not have depth), but her reason sounds more commercial to me. Sounds like those artistic differences would have disappeared if the $20M pay cheque was on the table. There were no noble artistic reasons for turning down the script. just business. After all this is the same actress who did tourist and salt….

@what??: Duh. Because it’s being reported everywhere that Angelina turned down this amazing role because they wouldn’t pay her enough. If you can’t keep up with the conversation, I’d suggest you just stay out of it.

@Lovely: So glad Angelina Jolie didn’t take this on. Her skeletal arms and legs would have distracted the audience from the storyline. Everyone would have been worried about those matchsticks breaking during the turbulence.

Sandra was excellent and George Clooney was…well, George Clooney.

Overall a great film and very pleased that the studios are getting the point that the market is looking for originality and good script rather than comic book heroes and one explosion after another.

Natalie Portman is another no no for this role. She has the acting range of a piece of lumber. She couldn’t even do Thor convincingly. Black Swan was an atrocious film and the role was a caricature. See The Other Woman for her only decent performance to date.

Robert Downey Jr might have been okay, but he does tend to overact these days.

Here’s the story behind the casting of the lead for Gravity. Blake Lively??? seriously?!

@River: I agree. Portman is an overrated whiney little runt.

Judi Dench will be nominated and will likely win for her role in Philomena.
