The episode introduces us to a guy named Mike who had met a girl named Caroline on the dating site Plenty of Fish. He is an artist and has had an online relationship with Caroline for a year and a half. In the beginning, she said her name is Caroline Rhodes. Mike had searched for her online and found her under the name Caroline Ledford on Facebook. He has never received a response from that profile and she explained on the “Rhodes” account that her parents got divorced and she was using a differnt name. She then told Mike that she was diagnosed with colon cancer about eight months before the episode started taping. He was very connected to her because of this as her mom had the same cancer.

Mike has never met Caroline in person or video-chatted with her online. She supposedly lives in the same city as him, but she always comes up with an excuse not to meet. She’s even had friends stop by his house and leave notes on his car and says she has been watching him at work. When Max and Nev leave his house after their first meeting, they call Caroline one of the most manipulative Catfishes ever for using cancer to get to him emotionally.

Max and Nev check out Caroline Redford’s Facebook account and note she never looks like she is sick. They send her a note and also a friend of Caroline Redford trying to find out who the real person is. They get in touch with a girl named Lauren who is friends with Caroline Redford and she confirms that the real Caroline lives in North Carolina, doesn’t have cancer, and doesn’t talk about a person named Mike. They then get in touch with Caroline Redford and video chat her. She says she doesn’t know who Mike is.

Max and Nev show Mike a video they had the real Caroline record saying she isn’t the girl he was talking to. He is crushed. Mike then reveals he knows where “Caroline” lives and that one time he stood outside her home on the phone and said to come out, but she told him to leave since she wouldn’t do that.

Max and Nev call the fake “Caroline” and tell her that they know who the real Caroline is. She starts crying and says that Mike is “her guy” and is in “her bubble.” He is the one person she can tell things too. She won’t tell them her name yet and says she will meet him at a public park.

At the park, the girl who is “Caroline” arrives and it turns out to be a girl named Heather that Mike had met on the dating site before. She had previously pretended to be someone and Mike called her out on it. She said she got upset so she made up the Caroline profile. She got so invested in their relationship that she didn’t want to leave. When she thought that he was going to leave, that is when she made up that she had cancer so she would be drawn back to her. While that was fake and her pictures were fake, she says that everything else was real.

Mike allows Nev to invite Heather to come over so they can chat. Heather apologizes for what she has done and Mike tells her that she needs to get help. Nev suggests that she go to therapy and says that there is nothing wrong with it. She leaves the house and goes into her car to cry her eyes out.

Nev later surprised Mike by setting up a video call with the real Caroline. They start bonding over being artists. She tells him to add her on Facebook.

One month later… Heather says she has talked to Mike only twice and feels like she is talking to a different person now. She says she is planning on meeting with a therapist and has started writing a private blog with her feelings, which she might make public.

One month later… Mike has no plans to talk to Heather again. He says he has been texting with Caroline and he will see where it goes.

I’m sorry but an “online” relationship is NOT a real relationship; don’t be so naive. Go out and meet someone.

Anyone else think the friend, Lauren (Nev videochatted with her) was terribly hot?

@Amy: Tell that to the countless number of couples that have met online, dated online for months/years, then met and got married and are still happily together. It is very much a real relationship. Some people don’t have the time to go out actively and find someone else, and some have tried and keep failing, so why not try online? It’s pretty ignorant, your statement; don’t put down other people’s relationships just because you don’t agree with the way they’re doing it, or because maybe it hasn’t worked for you. Just pathetic.
