'The Hobbit: The Desolution of Smaug' Tops 'Anchorman 2' at Weekend Box Office
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug won the box office for the second consecutive weekend with an additional $31.5 million, according to THR.
Coming in at No. 2 was Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, starring Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, David Koechner, and Christina Applegate, which grossed $26.8 million, with a five-day total debut of $40 million.
Internationally, the sequel took in $13.4 million from only five markets, which is nearly triple the entire lifetime gross of the first film.
Meanwhile, American Hustle, boasting Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, and Jennifer Lawrence, tied for third place with Disney’s Frozen, both with a stellar $19.1 million gross. The final numbers will be released Monday to determine which actually took third and which took fourth place.
Finally, Tom Hanks‘ new movie Saving Mr. Banks rounded out the Top 5, earning $9.9 million.
