Chris Brown Rejects Plea Deal in Washington D.C. Assault Case

Chris Brown leaves court after a hearing for his assault case on Wednesday afternoon (January 8) in Washington, D.C.

The 24-year-old singer was joined by his girlfriend Karrueche Tran and his bodyguard Chris Hollosy, who is also being prosecuted in the case.

Both Chris and his bodyguard rejected a plea deal for one count of simple assault. They were both accused of hitting a man outside of a D.C. hotel back in October after the man tried to get a photo with the singer.

Since he did not take the plea deal for the lesser charge, Chris now faces misdemeanor assault, which carries a more severe penalty.

Skip if you’re not interested in the mechanism of his case.
.
Brown is only charged with one count of Simple Assault which is a misdemeanor in D.C. There is no lesser included offense for SA. So if he goes to trial and loses all he can end up with is the same conviction for which he could have pled guilty.
.
The charge carries up to 180 days in jail or up to a $1000 fine or both. Plus a payment of from $50 to $500 must be imposed for the Victims of Violent Crime Act fund – payable to the Court. Obviously probation is available as a sentence.
.
Depending on the circumstances of the offense and the defendant’s record, the defendant could be eligible for some type of diversion like community service with no re-arrests over a 4 month period which would result in a dismissal upon completion (Deferred Prosecution Agreement).
.
There could also be a Deferred Sentencing Agreement which lasts 9 months but he would have to plead guilty then have his sentence deferred and complete conditions like a higher number of community service hours, maybe anger management classes, pay any restitution required and then after successful completion he can formally withdraw his guilty plea and the prosecutor dismisses the case.
.
So I’m not sure what the government offered in terms of a plea offer but unless it was a diversion program then he has little to gain by pleading to Simple Assault except to gain the court’s favorable consideration in sentencing because of his early acceptance of responsibility and an agreed upon cap on the government’s sentencing request. Whether it’s a guilty plea or a guilty verdict, it’s all the same on your record. Might as well try to win at trial.
.
Of course there is another diversion possible in D.C. and that’s Mental Health Court. LOL!!

@OK: yeah I totally agree. This guy needs to learn a lesson. But then again he is a celebrity which means he will be in a different part of the prison/jail if he was convicted. So unfair. I don’t see him stopping his annoyance anytime soon. He does look better than a couple months ago though. But I’m over his shenanigans.

He looks so hot in those pics !!!!!!!! Yummy………

It’s hard to see the guy without picturing him bashing a woman’s face into a dashboard and punching her repeatedly. I have to remind myself that while completely odious, the guy is still a human.
