'Boardwalk Empire' Ending Series After Upcoming Fifth Season

HBO’s hit series Boardwalk Empire will complete its run after the upcoming fifth season in fall 2014, the network has confirmed.

The news was revealed during HBO’s panel at the 2014 TCA Winter Tour on Thursday (January 9).

Boardwalk Empire, which stars Steve Buscemi, Kelly Macdonald, and Michael Shannon, debuted back in 2010 and was nominated for eighteen Emmy Awards for its first season. It also won the Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Drama for the first season.

“After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we’ve decided to wrap the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion,” series creator Terence Winter said in a statement.

let's be honest BE sucks now Says:

@JM: I agree. They had to kill their best and most beloved characters for shock value (Jimmy Darmody, Owen Slater, Richard Harrow, Angela Darmody, Eddie Kessler…). Other great characters left – besides Nucky, Eli and Capone – aren’t even given time of day anymore. If you’re going to shake things up, you better make sure you’re shaking them for a good reason, not just to fill some weird quota. When Jimmy was killed off, the emphasis was supposedly on showing how irreversibly corrupted Nucky’s soul had become. Yet despite Steve Buscemi’s great performance, Nucky hasn’t really changed much over the course of four seasons. Just killing a character for the sake of killing them isn’t good enough. If they’re going to die, it should at least be in the service of the show. This show was bound to end early.
