Dan Stevens Apologizes for Leaving 'Downton Abbey'

Dan Stevens is all suited up and smiling while leaving his Today show appearance on Thursday (January 9) in New York City.

The 31-year-old actor went on the show to promote his upcoming film Summer in February. He also chatted about the controversial decision to leave Downton Abbey.

“A lot of people were quite upset by that,” Dan said on the show. “I spend a lot of my time apologizing. Yeah, I get a lot of, ‘My wife was very upset by this. You have to apologize to my wife!’ Then they call them over. ‘Katherine! Come over here. This is the young man that upset you.’ ‘Say sorry!’ You have to apologize, in public … a lot, almost every day.”

“I suppose it was a surprise,” Dan added. “It’s a testament to how much people love the show, how much people love the character. In a way it was nice, but it has upset a lot of people, so I’m sorry.”

People are silly. What kind of a idiot are you to accost a man in public to apologize for leaving a tv show. The man is an even bigger idiot than his wife. It’s tv, it’s not real. Get over it. Leave the guy alone to live his life as he sees fit. I tried to watch the show a couple of times and found it dreadfully boring. The acting was good, but I just wasn’t into it.

If you watched the show, you’d understand why it was such a big deal that his character died so suddenly. In many ways his character was the reason for Downton Abbey, and the show had just reached its peak as his character and Mary had had a baby. Then, he died. It was a big deal if you’re a Downton fan.
Plus, I didn’t realize until recently that he gave everyone almost no notice that he was leaving until the day of. So that kind of forced them to do what they did. It wasn’t fair to them or the fans.
So, I get why he’s apologizing.

He was an idiot for leaving the show. Can u imagine jon Hamm leaving madmen? It was kinda like that. Selfish brat. He shouldn’t be so damn skinny either.

I think part of the huge upset for us Downton fans is his leaving (Matthew dying) came right on the heels of the Sybil character dying, too. So fans’ heads were spinning. I don’t understand why the show’s creator didn’t just fill the Matthew role with another actor instead of killing Matthew off.

@Maria: If you still haven’t watched a year old episode, then stay off the Internet.

Adages are around for a reason. “Never leave a hit show” is one of those adages that has proved itself to be true, over and over again. I hope it works out differently for this guy, but history isn’t with him.

As an avid watcher of DA since the beginning, I was so disappointed with this season’s opener. I knew, of course, that Matthew wasn’t going to come back to life; however, the story was dismal and depressing. Unfortunately, news from across the pond has revealed the series becomes more depressing in time. The only thing which would keep me watching the series would be Maggie Smith. Although she was featured in the opener, her wonderful sarcasm was missing and so was her wit. Not too entertaining any more, to say the least. In fact, Abbey seems to have turned into an evening soap opera.

i watch him in Summer in February, i lov him there , i dont watch Downton Abbey , hope see him in more films
