Angelina Jolie Joins Ethiopian Film 'Difret' as Executive Producer

Angelina Jolie has a new credit to add to her resume – executive producer of the Ethiopian movie Difret!

The film will be heading to the 2014 Sundance Film Festival this week as an entry in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition and now it has one of the world’s biggest stars putting her support behind it.

Angelina will be taking a presentation credit on the film and there is no word yet if the title will be changed, according to Deadline. The movie tells the story of a girl and a female lawyer who take on the Ethiopian tradition of “telefa,” which means marriage by abduction.

“This film is a strong moment for art in Ethiopia”, Angelina said in a statement. “It is inspiring to see such an important story so beautifully illustrated with such creative talent. It draws out the richness of Ethiopian culture and shows how important legal advances can be made while respecting local culture. It is a story that gives hope for Ethiopia’s future, and for other countries where countless girls grow up without the protection of laws that shield them and their bodies, and shows how the courage of brave individuals can awaken the conscience of a society.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK of Angelina Jolie joining the team behind the movie Difret?

Sundance: Angelina Jolie Joins Ethiopian Pic ‘Difret’ As Executive Producer

    .
The actress and director of the upcoming Unbroken is now on board as one of the EPs of the Sundance Film Festival World Cinema Dramatic Competition film Difret. The announcement that Angelina Jolie has joined the Ethiopian pic comes just days before its January 18 world premiere in Park City. The Oscar-winning actress also will be taking a presentation credit on the film.
    .
No word yet if that will change the title of the film. From first-time feature director Zeresenay Berhane Mehari, Difret tells the tale of a girl and a female lawyer who take on the Ethiopian tradition of “telefa”, or marriage by abduction. “This film is a strong moment for art in Ethiopia”, said Jolie in a statement today. “It is inspiring to see such an important story so beautifully illustrated with such creative talent. It draws out the richness of Ethiopian culture and shows how important legal advances can be made while respecting local culture. It is a story that gives hope for Ethiopia’s future, and for other countries where countless girls grow up without the protection of laws that shield them and their bodies, and shows how the courage of brave individuals can awaken the conscience of a society.” In November, Jolie was recipient of the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences’ Jean Hersholt Award for her international humanitarian efforts. This year’s Sundance kicks off tomorrow and runs through January 26.

I treated audition as just practice, says 12 Years A Slave star Lupita Nyong
    =====================================================
    .

    15 January 2014
    .
Her debut film role in 12 Years A Slave has earned her a Golden Globe and Bafta nomination. But newcomer Lupita Nyong’o has revealed her shock at landing a part in the acclaimed slavery drama — admitting she treated the audition as a trial run.
    .
London director Steve McQueen chose her from more than 1,000 hopefuls to play young slave Patsey, who is flogged and raped by her owner, opposite co-stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and Benedict Cumberbatch. Nyong’o said she had no expectations when auditioning, so used the process as practice.
    .
One to watch: Lupita Nyong’o in the magazine shoot. She said she had “two weeks of panic” after getting the part in Steve McQueen’s film. Read the full interview in the Girls Rule The World issue of Dazed & Confused, out tomorrow, at dazeddigital.com (Picture: Photography Sharif Hamza and Styling by Robbie Spencer for Dazed and Confused)“And then I got the role, and I just remember feeling a swell. My heart rose and fell, because all of a sudden I had to do this thing,” she added.
    .
“There was no kidding myself. I had at least two weeks of sheer panic and feeling like an imposter.“Part of being an artist is that you are always concerned you don’t have what it takes. It… keeps us honest.”
    .
Nyong’o, 30, is now tipped to receive an Oscar nomination for the movie, which won the best motion picture — drama award at the Golden Globes on Sunday and is up for 11 Baftas next month.
    .
Practice makes perfect: Lupita Nyong’o on the cover of Dazed & Confused magazine. Read the full interview in the Girls Rule The World issue of Dazed & Confused, out tomorrow, at dazeddigital.com (Picture: Photography Sharif Hamza and Styling by Robbie Spencer for Dazed and Confused)She told Dazed & Confused magazine she threw herself into acting in 2008 because she imagined “looking back on my life and truly regretting the fact that I hadn’t tried to be an actor”.
    .
But Nyong’o has so far shunned a glamorous lifestyle. “I prefer pyjama parties at my best friend’s house,” she said. Escape Plans: Solomon Northup and Twelve Years a Slave
    =============================================
    .

Posted on Sunday, January 12th, 2014 at 3:30 am
    .

During the movie awards season, Steve McQueen’s new film 12 Years a Slave will inspire discussions about its realistic depiction of slavery’s atrocities (Henry Louis Gates Jr. has already called it, “most certainly one of the most vivid and authentic portrayals of slavery ever captured in a feature film.”) and the points at which the film most clearly reflects and departs from Solomon Northup’s original narrative. It might also bring to mind the hundreds of thousands of slaves whose names, sufferings, and deaths have been long lost, whose lives were distorted into caricature within 19th-century white fiction, or were at best given life on the periphery of the comparatively few slave narratives we have from the antebellum period.
    .
12 Years a Slave, adapted from Solomon Northup’s memoir Twelve Years a Slave: Narrative of Solomon Northup, a Citizen of New-York, Kidnapped in Washington City in 1841, and Rescued in 1853, from a Cotton Plantation Near the Red River, in Louisiana, chronicles the harrowing journey of a free man, husband, and father of three who, at the age of 33, was kidnapped and sold into slavery by two white men who called themselves Merrill Brown and Abram Hamilton (real names Alexander Merrill and James Russell, respectively). Brown and Hamilton duped Northup to travel with them to Washington, D.C., for work as a violinist. After the men either drugged him or got him so drunk that he passed out, Northup awoke in chains with the new identity of Platt Hamilton, a runaway Georgia slave, his free papers gone, his life sold to slave trader James H. Birch (also spelled “Burch”) for $250. Twelve ghastly years later, fortuitous circumstances culminated in Northup’s release from the grasp of his cruellest slave master, a barbaric alcoholic named Edwin Epps, and in his return to his family in New York.
    .
Northup’s story is remarkable indeed. Written with white lawyer David Wilson, his narrative was published on 15 July 1853, about six months after his release. By all accounts, the two men strove to create an authentic text that revealed the insidious ruthlessness within slave culture. Though perhaps weakened at times by Wilson’s heavy-handed romantic writing style, the book followed a construction similar to earlier slave narratives and sold 17,000 copies by Thanksgiving of 1853. Within two years of its publication, the book had sold three times as many copies as Frederick Douglass’s autobiography. It gained wide readership as the first book-length, personal account of a free man kidnapped and sold into slavery, something widely rumoured and feared both before and after passage of the troublesome 1850 Fugitive Slave Act. Northup’s memoir has all the ingredients of a great film or stage play, complete with a benevolent traveling carpenter (Samuel Bass) who takes an interest in Northup’s plight and helps him gain his freedom. McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave is at least the fourth attempt to dramatize Solomon Northup’s unique story. The first two were stage productions, largely unsuccessful, featuring Northup himself. A third, the 1984 PBS film entitled Solomon Northup’s Odyssey, later reissued as Half Slave, Half Free, featured Avery Brooks as Northup and was directed by Gordon Parks.
    .

In a larger sense, of course, all extant, authentic slave narratives are also remarkable, simply because their authors lived to write (or at least collaborate in writing) them. They are harrowing survivor’s tales, however formulaically structured, embellished, appropriated, or even perhaps at times fictionalized. They are remarkable for the individual testimonies they offer and for their constant implicit and explicit reminders that their stories are representative of scores of other slaves whose stories will never be known, whose dreams and cries and songs are lost to river bottoms and oak boughs and unmarked graves. Of the nearly 450,000 slaves to arrive in the United States from Africa and the Caribbean, only 101 are known to have composed narratives about their experiences between 1760 and 1865. Among those, Northup’s and Douglass’s are the most famous, alongside the work of Harriet Jacobs, William Wells Brown, Henry Bibb, Mary Prince, and Ellen and William Craft, who married in bondage just before their daring joint escape. At the core of most narratives is a testimony against the infernal nature of slavery and the decimating toll that plantation life took on slaves, their families, and their friendships. In most, we meet doomed, tragic figures, often women — Frederick Douglass’s mother; Northup’s fellow slaves Eliza and Patsey — who appear only briefly before disappearing or dying before our eyes. We watch dreams of freedom become escape plans that are repeatedly thwarted before our narrators find, at last, tenuous paths to freedom.
    .
It’s tragic that we don’t know more about Northup’s life after he was freed. The mystery surrounding his post-slavery years illustrates the thin line between being remembered and being forgotten, between being here and being gone. We know with some degree of certainty that Solomon Northup sued his kidnappers, bought land in Glens Falls, New York (that was soon repossessed due to money woes), became a regular on the abolitionist lecture circuit alongside Frederick Douglass, and assisted runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad. After a newspaper mention of him in 1857, however, and a recollected sighting of him in 1863, Solomon Northup became lost to history. Unfounded rumours swirled: he was kidnapped again and sold back into slavery; Merrill and Russell murdered him; he became an alcoholic; he died a vagrant. When, where, and how Solomon Northup died is unknown, and might never be known. As we hail Steve McQueen’s portrayal of this diabolical epoch in American history and honour the memory of Solomon Northup and other characters in the film, let’s also honour those who never had a chance at freedom, who spent their entire anonymous lives in terror and agony. Let’s revere those whose silent, innumerable voices drift through forests and across fields, and rise in the dust of dirt roads in the North as well as the South at this very hour.
    .
Daniel Donaghy is an Associate Professor of English at Eastern Connecticut State University. He has written on slave narratives for the Encyclopaedia of African American History, 1619-1895, and his most recent collection of poems, Start with the Trouble (University of Arkansas Press, 2009), won the 2010 Paterson Award for Literary Excellence. The Oxford African American Studies Center combines the authority of carefully edited reference works with sophisticated technology to create the most comprehensive collection of scholarship available online to focus on the lives and events which have shaped African American and African history and culture.

    # 1893 Rose @ 01/15/2014 at 1:24 pm (Reply to post from previous thread)
    .
    Good Morning Rose
    .
First and foremost thank you for replying back needless of your feelings when you left its much appreciated I know it took a lot of guts for that I admire you for it. Thanks for making it clear that it was Your Post because we all were in dark, and we didn’t want to wrongly speculate who it was from prior to making any judgment. I know it took a lot of courage to do that considering your current feelings, I’m sorry to hear you had felt humiliated at the time; I can only apologies for not being here to placate your feelings.
    .
Rose I’m not going to pass on any kind of judgment or make any sanctimonious remarks on behalf of any one , but all I’m going to reiterate what I said in my last post to you is, I wished this issue was taken on head on with yourself & PT, instead of leaving it to fester, I bet this misunderstanding would have been nipped in the bud there and then, instead of letting it have an impact on your feelings for you to resort in saying out things in anger that we later regret. Please don’t think I’m passing any sort of judgment, all I’m saying is there are many other ways that it could have been dealt with like mature adult.
    .
I don’t think I said you’re seeking attention in my post, what I’m saying is I hadn’t realized the nature of your discontent with others as I wasn’t here to witness it, saying that I’m not condoning any type of behavior towards a great fan and sister like yourself, I’m sadden that I wasn’t here to placate your feelings, what I’m saying is most of the time we generally say out aloud things which can be misconstrued in other ways, and in this case I don’t think PT knowingly meant any harm towards you especially after reading her post to you. (I’m talking about her post in reference to your Last post.
    .
All I have to say is I admire you both in your own individual ways, you both have very strong views on things you believe in, past discussions have proved that even you wont d deny that, I’m not going to take sides but one thing I would implore you to see is PT’s 2 posts to you, after you had posted your last post here, she has made it pretty clear she wasn’t calling you (I’m not going to mention the word) nor we’re her intentions to. The reason I’m saying is that if it was the case then knowing her she wouldn’t hesitate in coming out and saying it to you directly, you have to give her that, you’ve been posting here for how long? I think by now we cant fiend ignorance of not knowing what our fellow fans really are like, with PT is what you see is what you get, if she has an issue she wont hide behind some one she will say it face on. So I would implore you again to read her post to you and she has in many words said she hadn’t said that to you. In this case I feel it’s a miscommunication on both parts, I haven’t seen her original post to you so I do apologies for my ignorance, if I’m wrong then I hold my head in shame and ask forgiveness I’m really sorry. As she has posted to you it shows she had here right to fight her corner and she has stated you were never the intended target as such, to be honest that day PT could be talking about any one, it might as well be me in the mix maybe we all are Hens for all we know god forbid lol ok I’m joking.
Rose if PT wasn’t concerned on what she may or may not have said to you then she wouldn’t have bothered to reply to you in the first place and that should tell you something ,you have to read her posts and see that and make your own judgment, all I’m saying is give her the benefit of the doubt . Remember it never been that badly between you two.
    .

Rose all I would say with out sounding a sanctimonies bych is that just take a step back take the whole picture into account, and come back when you fell you want to, come back in your own time no pressure, no one can make you we can in our infinitive ways ask you not to leave on a bad note, but that’s all we could do. I know personally I’d be losing a very honorable sister, a sister that I’d have like to have had more communication with regardless of this site, and like I said you are my sister from another mother and I don’t say that lightly, we sisters have disagreements then we make up that’s life . But I would say in no means PT had singled you out for ridicule that’s not her style, sorry but I have to give where credit is due and .she’s already said sorry , don’t let people like Tamshiit Troll rejoice on any misunderstanding we have amongst us, rise above it all as a better person.
    .

Also who am I going to gossip with about our crazy bro Kanya ? lol. Also I have quite lot of recipe’s lined up for you but they are only and only going to be posted when you get back here indefinitely yes I’m holding them back as ransom or bait lol.
    .
Some times we have to rise above it to be a better person, my sister this is a social media you are faced with The Good, the Bad & the very Ugly, that’s part of the parcel, which category we get that all falls on to the individual, some are strong to fight it off with come backs, some ignore it all together, and some would unfortunately take every word to heart, you cant help it. Life throws us many challenges which we have to face head on or ignore it all together. If you feel uncomfortable talking to some of us then at least doesn’t cut your self off from others.
    .
That’s all I have to say on this matter, forgive me if I have said any thing out of turn as it wasn’t my intention to, you take care God Bless my sister PS and be back soon ok.
