Vanessa Hudgens: I'm Afraid Of Myself When I Watch 'Gimme Shelter'

Vanessa Hudgens strikes a pose on the cover of Nylon magazine’s February 2014 issue.

Here’s what the 25-year-old Gimme Shelter star had to share with the mag:

On transforming into characters on screen: “I don’t think it’s ‘good girl gone bad.’ I think it’s more ‘girl growing into a woman and being passionate and taking choices.’ I have so much work to do, and I think I will always feel that way.”

On her role in Gimme Shelter: “It was the first time I really stepped out of my control zone, physically and material-wise. I’m a little afraid of myself when I watch it.”

On her future: “I know God’s plan for me is bigger than anything I could ever plan for myself. It allows me to not worry about the future or what other people think and just to be present and enjoy and try to shine as much as I can.”

    she is very bleh

  • kassie

The only thing she’s good at is getting naked

  • yuck

oh gross. her again. she looks very scary

  • Cate

She is very religious isn’t she? From the reviews it appears her new movie is thinly veiled Christian and pro-life propaganda so I guess that is one of the reasons she chose it.

  • Angel

It’s very obvious the first 3 commenters are the same person *cough* Nightwash *cough*. Anyway I’m really happy she’s on the cover of Nylon again. I always love their magazines :)

  • JJ

Well, I’ve never posted here before, but I do know that the film is a not-so thinly veiled Catholic propaganda piece. The woman that is grandized in the film as being such a good woman, Kathy Difiore, runs a frightening anti-abortion operation in Englewood, New Jersey whose workers terrorize women that attempt to enter and use the services of a female medical clinic across the street. They call themselves “sidewalk counselors” but stand in front of the car doors, so the clients cannot get out of their cars, chase clients when they do get out, yell at the clients, and overall act like crazy people! And, Kathy’s business has rented a “sonogram on wheels” van, at the cost of $8,500 a month(!!) and invite the clients to get into the van and get a free sonogram! Haven’t we all learned from infancy never to get into a car with strangers??? Crazy!
What does this have to do with Vanessa? She stars in a movie that puts this snake on a pedestal. Too bad Vanessa’s career has gone downhill to the point where she has no choice in roles. This was a bad move!

  • Cate

@JJ: Goodness, I didn’t know that about the woman. That is disgusting. I loathe those bullying and intolerant ‘pro-life’ people who terrorise and intimidate women.

  • tina

Let’s get this straight. Vanessa is an actress, she chose this role. I don’t care what you political agenda is if the role spoke to her, that her choice. The whole thing is about choice there is no way to make an informed decision about anything unless you have all the facts. Providing teen mothers with a choice is an admirable thing. I have a friend who made the choice to abort and till today she has nightmares about it. I don’t understand people who care more about the life of a chicken than they care about a child. People are idolized for being vegetarian or working with PETA but demonized for being pro-life?
Don’t get me wrong I’m pro-choice but I’ve seen people using abortion as a form of birth control. They can’t be bothered to take a pill, get a shot or use a consumer but have no compunction about terminating a pregnancy. All that aside it’s a role and a good one. No one is up in arms about Leo playing a man who stole millions in fact he will probably get an Oscar for it. That’s the problem with people today to win adoration you have to use drugs or break laws.

  • tina

Sorry that sb use a condom.

  • Haters Suck!

I was hoping people would people would leave their politics out of this movie. I knew that was wishful thinking cause its happening anyway.

  • Kelly martineau

Vanessa hardly goes to church. In the future get married to big lips and have lots of kids. Her career isn’t”t going anywhere.

  • Haters Suck!

    @kelly
Youre one crazy loon lady. I don’t know what your problem is but I’m sure its a long word that’s hard to spell.

  • maria

@JJ: This is Apple’s story. You can agree with her decisions or not personally, but it is her journey. Not a snake’s story. Would have been a different story if she chose to abort, now wouldn’t it? Leave your politics out of it.

  • maria

@TheAmyNicholson: Surprise! Vanessa Hudgens is really good at playing a homeless, pregnant teenager. http://t.co/PzB9khbKjQ

  • maria

Still, we’re drawn in because Hudgens is so good at making this wild child real.

Hudgens has been trying to move past her Teen Vogue image for a while now, appearing in sexy, over-the-top pictures like “Sucker Punch” and “Machete Kills.” Last year’s deliberately sleazy, sneering “Spring Breakers” was the final declaration of independence.

“Gimme Shelter” doesn’t go as far as the last film (it was actually shot two years ago). But it already shows signs of the actress Hudgens was interested in becoming, and her skill at walking that razor-sharp line between tender/tough, innocent/guilty.

So nice to see those who appreciate the way she is growing as an actress!

  • Nightwish

Wow, hudgens legs look so much shorter in that pic above than they do in the bongo ad lol

  • Nightwish

@maria: that was definitely a paid review.

  • yets

    so proud of our girl.

  • tina

She’s been consistently praised in the reviews. Can’t wait to see her in this.

  • sasha

It is me Glamour . Hwz life NW and aunties?

  • Nada

    She’s awesome I love her!!

  • Nightwish

@sasha: Their girl hudgens used this film as an opportunity to display her sheer angst and extreme desperation over fading into oblivion as an actress, and tortures any would be viewer with a 100 minute shrill, all caps display of morose thespianism. She’s under the impression that pushing the limit emotionally = good acting job, but majorly forgets that you also have to be likable and believable in the role. Ah hudgens… anything to get noticed, but you were literally way too scary and offputting for the performance to be parlayed into a future role dramatic or otherwise, unless its a short bit in a zombie flick (as a zombie) or a supporting role in a depressing drug addiction tv special they show to teens in schools for troubled youth. Whats really hilarious is some of the critics dont even realize how long ago this film was actually shot (2011). What was the director thinking? You dont make a super short 5’0″ woman gain a lot of weight for a role and cut her hair short, lest she look like a fat guy (or dy.ke), and worse, uglify her face to the point where she is absolutely excruciating to watch. Even more forbidding for the project, forcing these requirements on an actress who is just flat out wrong for the role, how ever desperate she seems to succeed and well intentioned she is to cooperate. It just wont work.

  • maria

@Nightwish: OMG. Stop the madness and leave her alone. Do you see her cast in every movie? Is she in every magazine? Is she at every event in Hollywood? No. There is room for all different actresses. Stop this shameless whining.

  • maria

@sasha: Working hard? Nice to hear you’re alive and well.

  • Jr

    Nightwish
Why so you hate this girl so much? What did she ever do to you?

  • maria

@Jr: It’s not Vanessa he hates. It’s us. He hates that she has fans, and that we bother to support her. Everything he says is for the sole purpose of ticking us off.

  • Jr

    Maria
I find that hard to believe. No one can possibly hate a person this much just because of other people. I’ve honestly never seen a person hate someone as much as nightwish seems to hate Vanessa.

  • maria

@Jr: I know. It’s hard for me to wrap my head around his purpose. But if you read back, you will occasionally see well-disguised compliments. Like Vanessa being on his list of favorite flat-chested girls. He really doesn’t hate her; he just finds our support of her annoying. Would love to know why he cares so damn much.

  • Haters Suck!

Some people are just a$$holes. Nightwish likes criminals, likes people who lie and cheat. Just look at the people he supports. Kristen Stewart a lying cheating home wrecker. Don’t want to bring him up but I will. Zac efron. A cocaine addicted, alcoholic with multiple trips to rehab. The funny thing about that is he didn’t like zac until he found out he was a drug and alcohol abuser. When he found that out is when he loved him. I wouldn’t be surprised if he became Justin biebers #1 fan based on his recent actions.

  • maria

@Haters Suck!: LOL!! But the absolute truth. And neither of them has more talent. One has a built in female fan base and the other has had luck with a teen hit. Talent had nothing to do with either.

  • Nightwish

How was the movie guys? You think she might squeak out an award of some kind, like a sag nomination? She did try really really hard in this one. I know im critical, but my observations are not far removed from what most critics are saying.

  • Nightwish

Its not all hudgens fault, guys. The stupid director should have dialed the intensity down with both her and rosario at key moments. I cant believe that krauss guy. Its like he shared a new song with others, turned the treble up and blasted the volume as loud as possible. Vanessa trusted him, and i hope he didnt damage her career too much. If i were hudgens, i would frankly be pissed at him.

  • Winnie

She definitely deserves the recognition she’s been getting for this intense role. If you haven’t watched the trailer yet, check it out and then go see the movie!!!

  • Winnie

    @Cate:

Juno was actually more pro-life than Gimme Shelter, to quite honest. In Gimme Shelter, she wanted to keep the baby from the very beginning. Juno got talked out of the abortion she wanted to get. A priest does help out the character, but this movie isn’t just some religious message given to the viewers in a heavy-handed way. This is a story of a teen’s struggle to find a home and family.
