Jesse Eisenberg Lands Villainous Lex Luthor Role in 'Batman vs. Superman,' Jeremy Irons to Play Alfred

Jesse Eisenberg has just landed a coveted role in the highly anticipated Batman vs. Superman film – villain Lex Luthor.

“Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940. What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions,” director Zack Snyder said in a statement.

Jeremy Irons has taken on the role of butler Alfred.

“As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s most trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and father figure. He is an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman. It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious façade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne,” the director added.

Superman vs. Batman also will star Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck.

WHAT DO YOU THINK of the new casting???

    This is getting exciting.

First Gal Gadot now this…the weird casting continues. Eisenberg is overrated, plays the same character in every movie, he’s basically Michael Cera with curly hair

  • Lauren

    @Tania: LOL!

  • essie

Cera has curly hair? lol… anyway I thought Lex Luthor was older than Superman, very strange.

  • roronette

I agree @Lisa. Jeremy Irons is a tremendous actor, I’m sure he’ll be a perfect Alfred and while Jesse seems like a surprising choice (he looks very young lol), I’m waiting to be pleasantly surprised :) I liked him in Now you see me and To rome with love.

  • Repunzel

LOL – this movie gets sillier by the day….starting with idiotic premise…next

  • Beaumont

From the Oscars to Lex Luthor !
I see the future of Jennifer Lawrence .

  • Shonn

    @essie:

Actually, in the comic books, Lex was about the same age as Clark (Superman). They were friends until Superboy caused Lex to lose all of his hair.

  • Kiki

Noooo there must have been a mistake! They said HEISENBERG, NOT Eisenberg! Now get Bryan Cranston on the phone NOW!

  • Sam

@Tania THIS! I’m actually of both Eisenberg and Jeremy Iron fan of thier work but the casting for the characters are very mismatched!!!

Eisenberg as Lex Luther – Really??? very young standing next to Ben Affleck’s Batman and Irons as Alfred – just no….Waste of a great actors!!!

  • Doomsday

Eisenberg is sure smug enough to play Luthor

  • Liam

Ugh, I won’t be seeing this batman with that anti gay bigot Jeremy Irons! bad casting choice!!

  • Ash

Eisenberg as Lux Luthor? I’m puzzled by this casting. How strange. Yes @Doomsday he is smug enough, but I don’t know if he would actually pull off the whole character. We shall see.

  • Luna

Eisenberg as lex luthor???? and i thougth that it couldn’t get any worse than ben affleck as batman
he is too young for the role, and honestly a mediocre actor. terrible choice

  • Joneblaze

I could see him as Alexander Luthor Jr but the Lex we all love to hate wow this is odd casting

  • jennifer

read the story of lex luthor and maybe you’ll understand why they cast jesse as him. lex luthor is beyond from the movies and tv shows you have seen

  • Cate

Ugh…Jesse Eisenberg and his repetitive acting tics and line delivery as Lex Luthor?

Way to go Hollowood, just keep hiring those stinkin’ jews with all your remakes and sequalls. Zero originality, zero brains and useless jewish actors who can’t actually act ! Same ole same ole…

  • http://grynatelefon.net Mike

What the hell?!!!! This is somekind of sick joke??? Next is Jonah Hill as Brainiac or Justin Bieber as Doomsday?!!!! Hell no!

  • Camden

You know, there was a point when I was desperately looking forward to MOS. When the film came out I was disappointed. I thought MOS 2 would be a redeeming factor, to really establish Superman. Now every man and his dog is in this film. This is going to be like Joel Schumacher “Batman & Robin”. Jesse Eisenberg as Luthor? Wasn’t he supposed to older or at least the sage age as Superman. By the time the film comes outs Henry Cavill will be around 35 and Jessie Eisenberg is going to be like some geeky college kid playing the almighty villain….what a joke.

Natalie Portman, Logan Lerman, Mila Kunis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Andrew Garfield, Paul Rudd, are all Jewish too.

My personal thoughts are-Eisenberg and Irons are witty, excellent, and well spoken actors. Is it possible that this script is somewhat twisting or changing the storyline of what all the DC fans are accustomed to reading or viewing on the big screen. It’s obvi that Affleck took this role with hesitation at first, but read the script, and new this was some good sh$$!!
Right? He knows writing and directing, for gods sake, he just won several awards for screen writing and directing in the film industry. Think about it folks. Lastly, Batman character is not about the acting, as much as the gadgets, action, and mystery behind the character. I have a feeling all the naysayers or pessimistic peeps will be wildly surprised by the film.
I’m excited and can’t wait to see it!!!
    Peace*Love

Uh oh so he will have to shave off that nice hair? Or wear a bald cap but I think he will be forced to shave his head. And he seems miscast. Just like Ben Affleck.

  • Lori

This casting is really interesting. 2 amazing actors. I can’t wait to see the movie.

  • Batman4LYF

First Gal Gadot and now Eisenberg? Are you kidding me? I dunno if eisenberg will be able to pull this off but I hope he does well, I seriously dont want a good movie like this going down the drain. They should have cast Gina Carano instead imo

  • Josh

Anyone complaining about his age is stupid. Superman and Lex are the same age in the comics, and this is about a young Superman, so of course they’re going to feature Batman (Affleck) is playing an older, more seasoned Batman but Superman and Lex have always been the same age. Very inspired casting.

  • Josh

    @Mike:

    youre a moron

  • cbd

@Herry: Zero brains? Well, look who’s talking. Take a look at how you spelled “sequels.” Go back to nursery school, will you?

And for the record, outside of film and tv, Jesse writes occasionally for McSweeney’s, and he’s a playwright too (he has staged two plays off-Broadway).

  • Anon

Wrong choice all round i would say.!!

  • W.E

Ugh.. This movie might get the drop. Why don’t you peeps just wait and see IF they shoot for the movie or not, or even replace casting! How critically stupid (you, yes you.)

  • ILoveYouMike

Yes. A big joke. I don’t want to see Eisenberg’s waxed off head, as if his forehead isn’t big enough!

  • ILoveYouMike

Yes. A big joke. I don’t want to see Eisenberg’s waxed off head, as if his forehead isn’t big enough!

  • Jesse

Shut the hell up haters! Jesse Eisenberg is one talented guy! None of you can see it since you’re only focused on one of the characters he played aka Mark Zuckerberg. I’d like to see you do ALL of the characters he’s played and your way of ‘different’ methods of acting.

  • sukmadick

    suckmadick

  • jojoyo

He will be a young Lex Luthor. He probably wont even own lex corp yet, and his father Lionel Luther has just not been cast yet. Or he just inherited the company.

  • FormerDCFan

Irons is a perfect fit to play Alfred. Eisenberg is a fu$$ing pitiful little wimp. What is he going to do as Lex Luther? Get beat up and get yelled at by Batman and Superman and start shuddering like the spineless moron that he is! Terrible choice by the Casting department…they really dropped the ball on this one. What happened to talks of Joaquin Phoenix playing Lex Luther? I mean at first I disagreed with Ben Affleck as Batman, however after reading the reason why…I get it! I think it’s time that Christopher Nolan take the reigns and say, “Alright Jesse isn’t going to work… We need a person that can play a bad ass villian.” Why couldn’t they have tried to get Jason Statham. Not saying he would even consider the role, but he’s better then that douche Eisenberg. I mean seriously…are they trying to make this movie a flipping failure? I don’t care whether you agree or disagree with me, because if you’re on here ranting about this like I am you and I have one thing in common… WE HAVE NO LIFE!!!

  • RKNO

    @Herry: Calm down, Hitler.

  • gaytrekkie

I like it. Lex is supposed to be Superman’s age. They’re supposed to be arch enemies. It makes more sense for them to be the same age. I think Jesse is a great actor and he can do something new with the role that no one else has. I’m excited about this.
