Lupita Nyong'o: I Haven't Gotten Used to Being Recognized

Lupita Nyong'o: I Haven't Gotten Used to Being Recognized

Lupita Nyong’o looks gorgeous on the cover of New York Magazine‘s latest issue.

Here is what the 30-year-old Oscar-nominated actress had to share with the mag:

On her first school play role in Oliver Twist: “I was a passerby. I had five words: ‘Coming down the street, there.’ That was it. But I had a backstory for my character. I decided I was going to be a man, so I borrowed my brother’s suit, my dad’s briefcase. I don’t know why I decided to be a man—I think it was more interesting.”

On life after her awards season run: “I’ve been in a bubble. I haven’t been out much. I haven’t gotten used to being recognized. I was blissfully ignorant of the magnitude of the project I was in or what it was going to mean for the world.”

On her first few months in America: “I thrive on structure. I find my freedom in structure. It was very hard to adjust to an individualistic and very liberal system. I mean, my upbringing, I would iron my clothes every night. I would plan what I wore the night before, and then I would iron it. That’s just the way my mom raised us. Then I got to Hampshire, where clothing is sometimes optional and all this kind of thing. I was mortified.”

    Absolutely ggggawwwjaauuuuss honey!!! Beautiful Cov!

  • Clarissa

I wish it would have been a close up, she has such a beautiful face.

  • Oli

Okay, that’s just ridiculous… ‘ I haven’t gotten used to being recognized. ‘? That’s probably because she’s not popular. I mean, her acting was great and all but it was just one movie. If you show her face outside of America no one would know who she is yet she thinks she speaks like she’s Sandra Bullock or something. She’s just not there yet and it’s a looong way

  • xXx

  • And the hate on Lupita started

@Oli: Really Sandra Bullock ? this is the first name who came to your mind ? And yes it s her first big role , this is why she s not used to be recognized . I dont see what s ridiculous in what she is saying .

  • ?????

LOl!!! A black woman who wears her hair natural, speaks with a British accent in five languages and very intelligently PLUS wears clothes like she does is always going to be noticed over a little white girl with brown hair in a ponytail.

I have no doubt people are stopping her on the street. .

  • Tamahome

@Oli: Why is it so hard for some people to accept that some woman of color are actually intelligent human being ? And let’s not forget she is not from america where people are so friggin judgemental ! She is a beautiful , intelligent talented woman and i hope she get to be as successful as Sandra Bullock ..LOL. who by the way is another one of my favorite actor .

  • Oli

@tamahone I have’t mentioned her color or anything like that, to be honet I wasn’t even thinkig about that. And I am not saying that she’s stupid or that she doesn’t have talent, and I don’t care if she’s beautiful or ugly as hell. All I was trying to say is that she’s not being recognised enough to ‘get useed to it’ therefore her comment has no sense. Even people in America don’t realise who she is unless they are really into cinema and movies industry.
@And the hate on Lupita started
I said Sandra Bullock because she’s a well-known actress , that’s why. No other reason. And I don’t hate Lupita, I was actually impresed by her acting

  • Lupita looks better than that

@Werk!: You are a liar. Lupita is way to gorgeous for that cover. That cover aint showing how beautiful she is in reality. She had way better covers before. It looks like they made her ugly on that cover. No really, look at her head something is weird photoshoped.

  • Gorgeous

She was great in 12 Years, which was such a mediocre film with such a wonderful cast (except for Brad producer Pitt). She’s so stunning; unique beauty you can’t find in the US because everyone is so mixed there.

The question is, why was the film so bad? The script was all wrong and it was nothing unique.

  • Samba

@Gorgeous: The script was like you.
Do you live in a cave?

  • MHO

@ Oli-I agree with you….she thinks she’s bigger than she actually is. 12YAS has only made $40 million at the B.O. She’s not a superstar…all the awards attention has gone to her head. I hope she starts booking some new roles soon and isn’t a one hit wonder.

  • dreamon1978

Lupita is classy and a breath of fresh air. Her style is impeccable.

  • Rocky

OMG! Give the woman a break!! She makes one comment and she’s vain, trying to be better than she is? GET OVER YOURSELVES!! People will recognize her and she’s not used to being recognized, so it’s all new to her. That’s what she meant and you all blow it out of proportion. Some of you women are just so stupid!

  • Rocky

Two words: GORGEOUS. STUNNING!! Nothing more to say.

  • guest

@MHO actually your wrong darling it has made $97 million. And having seen the film especially for her first film she really did go there, no question her and Fassbender. So she definitely deserves the attention she’s getting. I hope Hollywood does more with her the future.

  • jay

@guest it has actually done $108 million, so yeah it’s definitely been profitable I don’t think she’s being arrogant or anything is going to her head, she’s doing just fine.

  • Sey

@Gorgeous: The script was based on a true story, the book written by Solomon Northrup himself, so I think it’s pretty impressive to think most of the things in the film actually happened in real life. To think that Patsy and Solomon really existed and that their story is being told in the film.

  • True

@Oli: You’re dumb. She never said she was superfamous. She said it’s weird being recognized and getting so much attention, considering that last year this time, no one knew her name, and now she is on the covers of all these magazines, attending all these award shows, etc.

  • Alaia

@Oli: Looks like you can’t read. She didn’t say she didn’t get recognised. She said she hasn’t gotten used to being recognised, so yes, that refutes your claim that she doesn’t get recognised because she is saying she is but she hasn’t gotten used to it. Get it now? No one is saying she’s Sandra Bullock.

  • Werk

@Lupita looks better than that: suckad!ck! I think she looks great!!

  • Elodieee

The harder you haters are trying, the bigger you fail.

  • goodnamestaken2

Actually she speaks in Kenyan accent not British but since Kenya is a former British colony I guess she sounds British…Anyway, she is beautiful I am happy she is being recognized in America but the rest of us non-Americans are just as as obsessed with her humility, her style and poise…..I pray that the haters don’t get to her because it is only a matter of time. She needs a tough skin because she just got in the door and the vultures are circling.

  • rawr

she’s gorgeous, intelligent, humble and poised, a yale drama school graduate, and an actress that did her first ever featured film and gets nominated everywhere on the spot. i hope she stays grounded cause commentators can be very jealous especially of an actress with true value and substance.

  • Joya

Twelve Years A Slave has made over $107 million at the box office. What have you been smoking? PLUS …………. WTF does that have to do with how important a film it is?

  • ????

I knew it was Kenyan accent but most racist Americans wouldn’t so I changed it.

    Wonderful young woman!

  • Immaculate

    @Samba: and @Sey:

I’ve seen all of the director’s films and think this one was the most average, lecturing-from-a-soapbox film. The acting, cinematic feel, visuals, cinematography, costume design, soundtrack etc was exceptional. But the tone just leaves one cold. It just seems anachronistic…if they’d added a modern dimension they could have made it a classic. But this film feels like it was made in the 90s. For example, a descent of the main character investigating his story.

  • ????

Like one of his descendants looking for him?

  • Class all around

All of the haters on the Lupita thread are Jennifer Lawrence fans. It is sad because they give JLaw a bad name.

  • Immaculate

@????: Modernising it by interweaving the main story with a story about his descendent(s) remembering his story and contrasting the racial politics then and now. That would have modernised it a bit. Otherwise the story was just old-fashioned.
