Matthew McConaughey to 'Variety': Damn Right This is a Great Time in My Career!

Matthew McConaughey is his usual dapper self on the cover of Variety magazine’s latest issue.

Here’s what the 44-year-old Dallas Buyers Club actor had to share with the mag:

On where he’s at right now: “For the next two months, I’m playing the character of Matthew McConaughey, an actor proud of the films he’s been in. And if any of those films or his performances are in awards shows, he’s going to go, heart high and head up, and look them all in the eye and say, ‘Damn right this is a great time in my career.’ That’s the role I’m in now. I’ve got a lot to be thankful for.”

On playing roles in rom-coms: “It is a hard challenge to make it work, to tell a story you’ve seen time and time again that you know what the ending is going to be. You have to stay light, you have to keep it moving. You drop anchor in one of those movies, and the whole thing sinks.”

On if Dallas Buyers Club was a difficult shoot: “I’ve got a saying: When faced with the inevitable, get relative. The inevitable was, I’m going to do this. I’ve got support from my family that insulates me. I surrounded myself with everything I needed to go on this adventure. And the focus was exciting. I said to myself, ‘We’re taking a trip, McConaughey. This is a story you want to tell. Those adventures you talk about — you’re on one now.’ ”

The Oscars have not been the same since Reese Witherspoon won back in 2006. Reese Effing Witherspoon! And now MM is going to win. Has no one else noticed he ONLY plays Texans?! Maybe because he can’t even change his accent. Let alone his facial expressions.

He is just too conceited for me. he couldn’t stand he wasn’t the star of The Paperboy.

    I love Matthew Says:

He is not conceited. He is grateful and thankful to God, which is A LOT more than I can say for people like Brangelina. Brad Pitt already stated in a magazine that HE makes things happen. It’s all about him. It’s all about THEM. Every time I’ve seen McConaughey on TV, he has words of wisdom. He is a thinker. He knows how blessed he is. As for him playing one type of role, that’s what many actors did. Clint Eastwood. Denzel Washington. Their characters are always similar. And going back to Jolie, she also cannot play the roles that someone like Meryl Streep plays. I have never seen her tackle Broadway. Matthew is an actor. He went to acting school and he’s just one of the lucky ones from a pool of hopefuls. He settled down nicely with a wife and kids, instead of going in the way of people like Leo, Cooper and Fassbender. He’s also been around for a while and I am very happy for all of his success. He is well-liked in the industry.

I don’t care if he always plays a Texan and I don’t care if he’s confident and excited, he’s right, he’s living his dream and he’s have a damn great time in his profession right now. We should all be so happy doing what we do for a living and he’s a great actor. He’s funny, he’s charismatic, he’s nice, and he’s talented. I wish more actors were like him instead of moody and over dramatic because they want to be taken seriously, totally conceited or completely stuck up. You can feel his excitement pouring out in a written interview and you normally can’t feel that. I think he rocks and I hope he wins all of the awards he can this season! I may be pushing for the 12 Years A Slave cast this year, but he risked his life to play the role that he did and he did it well. I love that he’s been acknowledged for it. Go Matthew!

I should probably clarify on my “he risked his life to play the role” statement before someone tries to correct me. Anytime you have extreme weight gain or extreme weight loss, it takes a big toll on your heart. The rapid weight that Matthew dropped and how much/fast he did it, was definitely a strain on his body. That’s what I was referring to.

@I love Matthew: Because he’s married, doesn’t make any better than Leo or anyone else. I don’t think he had much of a choice as Camilia was preggers and kept popping out babies before they got married 2 – 3years ago. Yes, he did the right thing due to his situation with her.

For some reason…. I’ve always kinda liked him!

If he risked his life for a movie role as you said I think you would call that STUPIDITY !!!
