Angelina Jolie on 'Unbroken' Story: The Strength of the Human Spirit is Extraordinary

Angelina Jolie gives a sweet hug to her Unbroken inspiration Louis Zamperini as they sit down for a pre-taped interview on the Today show, which aired today (February 25).

“I imagine that for the last 10-something years, he has been sitting there having a coffee in the morning and wondering who’s going to make this movie,” the 38-year-old actress and director said about World War II hero Louis. “And I’ve been sitting in my room laying there thinking, ‘What am I supposed to be doing with my life? I wanna do something important. I need some help. I need some guidance. Where is it?’ And it was right outside my window.”

“(The world) can seem hopeless and it can seem very overwhelming,” Angelina added. “But the resilience and the strength of the human spirit is an extraordinary thing.”

You mofos only developed hatred for Angelina Jolie when you realized that after Brad kicked the ol’ albatross he had around his neck to the curb, the very next time you saw him, he was irrevocably in love with Angelina Jolie and together they were building a FAMILY.
    .
You fvckers all thought it wouldnt last; that Angie would “chew him up and spit him out” and that he would “come to his senses” and return to that lazy good-for-nothing coattail rider. Hey, even she thought so too.

And for N.I.N.E. long years that belief sustained you in your cesspool of self-hatred. And so y’all used to spare Brad your vitriol and save it all up for Angie. What Angelina Jolie Could Teach World Leaders About Syria

It’s not often that Syria’s humanitarian crisis makes headline news in Perez Hilton, E! News, Just Jared or Hollywood.com — but Angeline Jolie’s recent trip to Lebanon has everyone talking. Of course, few people have the same pull as the internationally-acclaimed actress/UN ambassador, but have we heard of any other “big names” visits to Syrian refugees?

Everyday, children are dying without food or shelter, but little has been done.
As one documentary photographer said after visiting Syrian refugee children in Lebanon, “no one cares.” A visit from top-level officials from the Obama administration could change that. For a country that considered bombing Syria, a visit to help its people shouldn’t be a tall order.
World leaders have a unique opportunity to leverage their names for international action.
U.S. leaders have visited Syrian refugees, but their trips barely made headlines outside of official government blogs. In January 2013, U.S. Ambassador to Syria Robert Ford, Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration Anne C. Richard, and USAID’s Nancy Lindborg recently visited a refugee camp for Syrians in Turkey. This year, Richard, along with Special Adviser for Global Youth Issues Zeenat Rahman from the Department of State, visited refugees in Jordan. While their visits are important, you’d be hard pressed to see breaking news coverage on them. Meanwhile, thousands of children die everyday in a situation in desperate need of help.

Big names bring big coverage. That’s the reality of media. And Angelina Jolie knows this. So does does Malala Yousafzai. In a recent interview, the young women and education right’s pioneer called on President Obama to visit Syrian refugees.
“I would request that the president go to the Jordinian-Syrian border, or go to the border of Lebanon and Syria, and see how these people are suffering,” Yousafzai said in an interview with Wolf Blitzer. “When he will look at it, he will feel it. And then he will understand what it happening here.”

Jolie’s visit was heavily guarded. She was surrounded by tight security on her surprise visit. While a visit by Obama himself may be out of the question for security reasons, another top-level visit by the Obama administration would add to the media coverage Jolie has given Syrian refugees.
It’s not out of the question for the secretary of atate to make surprise trips to high-conflict areas. Hilary Clinton, for example, made such a trip to Yemen, Libya and Pakistan in 2011. Would John Kerry visit Jordan, Syria or Lebanon?
A “celebrity” visit from the Obama administration could bring coverage to the over 2.5 million displaced refugees and aid the politically volatile state of Syria. A longtime fan of the actress, it seems strange to say this: Angeline Jolie, world leaders should follow in your footsteps.

Angelina Jolie Speaks to Tom Brokaw about Universal’s ‘Unbroken’ (VIDEO)
    =========================================================

    February 25, 2014 | 06:32AM PT

    .
Tom Brokaw’s interview with Angelina Jolie and World War II hero Louis Zamperini, the subject of Jolie’s film “Unbroken,” aired this morning on NBC’s “Today.” The pic, which Universal Pictures releases on Christmas Day, is her first studio pic as a director.
    .
Brokaw put it to her that it was more than just filmmaking; for her it was personal. “You’ve got the legacy of this amazing man in your hands,” he said. Jolie agreed. “Such a huge responsibility to get it right,” she said. “I love him so much and he’s helped me so much in my life.”
Jolie explained how she came to adapt Laura Hillenbrand’s best-seller. “I wanted to direct something again, but I wasn’t sure what. It had to be something I would love and care about. It takes much more time away from your family and much more effort than acting,” she said.
Jolie also spoke about her difficulties in getting the project greenlit: “This has been the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” she said. “I had all the hours of phone calls and things, and then I made all these boards. I took my glue and tape, and pictures off the internet, and I put all my boards in a garbage bag and carried them myself to Universal, and put them out… and I pitched my butt off.”

A Hollywood honor: Lebanon gets props from Angelina Jolie for Syrian refugee generosity
    ===================================================================
    .
    Published February 25th, 2014 – 09:55 GMT
    .

U.N. Special Envoy and Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie Monday concluded her official visit to Lebanon to draw attention to the Syrian refugee crisis by holding talks with Prime Minister Tammam Salam and President Michel Sleiman.
    .
Jolie met with Salam at the Grand Serail and later talked with Sleiman to discuss the impacts of the refugee influx on Lebanon, after having spent the previous day with refugees in the Bekaa Valley.
    .
“The generosity and solidarity shown by Lebanon and Lebanese to its neighbor serves as an example to the world for which we should all be grateful. We all need to help them bear this burden,” Jolie said after meeting Salam.
    .
Jolie, 38, was on a three-day visit to Lebanon to highlight the plight of Syrian children and to thank the Lebanese people for assisting refugees as the conflict enters its fourth year, a statement from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said.
    .
The actress said she welcomed the adoption of U.N. Security Council 2139 on humanitarian assistance to Syria, which she described as “a long overdue step in the right direction for the hundreds of thousands of innocent Syrian men, women and children trapped in hard to reach areas across Syria.”
    .
Jolie, who was previously a U.N. goodwill ambassador, emphasized the need for the resolution to be more than just a paper declaration.
    .
“It must be implemented – and that will take political will and courage. The unity that the council has shown must not be a one-off, but the start of a new phase in ending the conflict,” she said.
    .
Prior to her meetings with Salam and Sleiman, Jolie met with orphaned Syrian children living in the Bekaa Valley.
    .
“Meeting these children was a heart-rending experience. They have lost their families and their childhood has been hijacked by war. They are so young, yet they are bearing the burdens of their reality as if they are adults,” Jolie said.
    .
There are currently around 3,500 unaccompanied children, separated from their families, known to be living in Lebanon.
    .
The star of films such as “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” stressed throughout her visit the vital contribution being made by Lebanon. With the number of registered refugees nearing the 1 million mark, Lebanon has the highest per capita concentration of refugees of any country, according to UNHCR. It is also hosting more Syrian refugees than any other country.
    .
Over 930,000 Syrians have registered with the U.N. for refugee status, swelling the country’s population by one-fifth. But government estimates place the total number of displaced Syrians in the country at well over 1.5 million.
Jolie’s visit to Lebanon is her third in two years. Her last visit was in September 2012.
    .
“The purpose of the visit was to shed light on the plight of Syrian refugees,” UNHCR spokeswoman Dana Sleiman said. “We are hoping that [the visit] will boost interest especially toward Lebanon, since Lebanon has done so much to meet the needs of Syrian refugees.”

    .
The Costume Designers Guild members honored their own at a gala dinner and awards ceremony at the Beverly Hilton’s International Ballroom on Saturday night, handing out awards for outstanding costume design in seven categories as well as a handful of honorary recognitions.
    .
Among the high-profile attendees (many of them tapped to awards) included Mindy Kaling, Tony Hale, Bill Hader, Jonah Hill, Debra Winger, Kerry Washington, the evening’s host Joshua Malina (“The West Wing,” “Scandal”) and a va-va-voom Raquel Welch, who recognized the importance of costume design by quipping: “Face it, if [costume designer] Sir Carl Toms hadn’t put me in that fur bikini in ‘One Million Years B.C.,’ I wouldn’t be here — there wouldn’t be a Raquel Welch.”
    .
In a possible preview of Oscar night, Patricia Norris won for excellence in period film for her efforts on “12 Years a Slave,” a category that included fellow 2014 Academy Award nominees Michael Wilkinson for “American Hustle” and Catherine Martin for “The Great Gatsby.”
Norris’ son took to the stage to accept the award on her behalf. “She said, ‘Go have a good time, I’m not going to win,’” Robert Norris said before reading a brief just-in-case list of thank-yous from his mother. “I can’t wait to give this to her. Thank you.”
The night’s other categories and winners included:
    .
    Excellence in Contemporary Film
    Suzy Benzinger for “Blue Jasmine”
    Excellence in Fantasy Film
Trish Summerville for “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”
    Outstanding Contemporary Television Series
Tom Broecker for “House of Cards”
    Outstanding Period/Fantasy Television Series
    Caroline McCall for “Downton Abbey”
Outstanding Made for TV Movie Or Miniseries
Ellen Mirojnick for “Behind the Candelabra”
    Excellence in Commercial Costume Design
Nancy Steiner for “Call of Duty: Ghosts Masked Warriors”
    .
April Ferry, whose costume design credits include “The Big Chill” and this year’s “RoboCop” remake, was the recipient of a career achievement award, Sharon Day received the distinguished service award and Judd Apatow was honored with the guild’s distinguished collaborator award.
After a montage of film stills and behind-the-scenes photos from his various movies and TV shows (“The Ben Stiller Show,” “Bridesmaids,” “Superbad” and “Girls” among them), Apatow noted that he had been wearing a Lacoste shirt “in every single shot.” “If that doesn’t get me a free box of [expletive] I don’t know what does,” he joked.
Amy Adams was the final honoree, receiving a crystal award in the shape of a crocodile (the iconic Lacoste logo), which was presented to her by “American Hustle” costar Jeremy Renner.
“My daughter’s obsessed with alligators right now,” Adams said, “so I’m going to put this in her room while she’s asleep and she’s going to freak out.”
Adams went on to share a light-hearted laundry list of things she’d learned from costume designers over the years, from “the actual start date of a movie” to “always wear undergarments to a fitting,” ending with profuse thanks to costume designers, costume house Western Costume “and ['American Hustle' key costumer] Honah Lee [Milne], who helped me keep my dignity when, at the end of the day,” Adams said, “there wasn’t a shred of it left.”

Who’d Like To watch Angelina Jolie Flirt Awkwardly With A 97-Year-Old?
    ====================================================

Angelina Jolie has decided to promote Unbroken by doing an awkwardly weird interview – which aired on Today this morning- where she openly flirts with Louis Zamperini, who’s the subject of the film she’s just finished directing.

The 38-year-old mother-of-six tells him “I love you” while the World War II hero and Olympic runner, 97, calls her “honey” as she snuggles up to him and holds his hand at his house.

Poor Angie – she just can’t help but mewl and resort to the only play she has in her book which is flirting and using her sexuality, even though for me it totally detracts from the seriousness and weight of Zamperini’s story.

Maybe it’s just because I’m British, but I was brought up to treat my elders with a polite awed respect, rather than do my best to act sexy around them.

As well as playing up to being Louis’ “girlfriend”, Angie draws attention to the fact that they’re LA neighbours and, conveniently forgetting that she’s not supposed to let slip that she and Brad Pitt’s five nannies look after the kids, she gave us a glimpse of life Chez Brange:

“I’ve been sitting in my room, laying there thinking what am I supposed to be doing with my life,” said Jolie. “I want to do something important. I want to connect, but I need some help. I need some guidance. Where is it? And it was right outside my window.”

She wants to be taken seriously as a director but you’d never see any of the big male directors in Hollywood holding hands with the subject of their movie and giving it the wide-eyed sex kitten routine in an interview with Today because they’d be laughed out of Los Angeles.

Even though the interview wasn’t filmed this week, it was purposely saved to run in Oscar week (as there’s more Academy voters watching the news this week and she wants to capture their hearts way ahead of the competition for next year).

Rather handily, Today’s owned by Universal and that’s the studio who are behind Unbroken.

And, Jolie’s people also managed to get Today’s anchors to squeeze in the fact that she’s currently in the Lebanon – neatly getting around the fact that those pesky UNHCR security people wouldn’t let her give interviews whilst there.

    ‘Nice one, Ange.

What’s the betting that when she presents at the Oscars on Sunday that she takes Zamperini along as her date?

The segment’s below and it’s vaguely interesting if only to check in on Angie’s latest facial fillers and how they look on film.

Hammond minister finds religious paralells in “12 Years a Slave”
    ================================================
    .
    Published: Tuesday, February 25, 2014
    .
Director Steve McQueen’s Academy Award-nominated film, “12 Years a Slave” takes the viewer to an intimate place where slavery is lashed at and dehumanized just as the slaves were in pre-Civil War North America. Stanley N. Helton, Minister of the Word at First Christian Church of Hammond, was intrigued by the adapted screen play since he had read the book from which it was based, “12 Years a Slave: Narrative of Solomon Northup” by Solomon Northup. Helton came to the Student Union Theater to present the 14th annual Black History and Politics Lecture titled, “The Gods of Slavery: The Theology of Solomon Northup.”
    .

The purpose of his presentation was to highlight the use of the Bible in Northup’s narrative throughout the film “12 Years a Slave,” and the impact of slavery and the Civil War on religious denominations. McQueen’s film tells the true story of Solomon Northup, a free black man in pre-Civil War America residing with his wife and children in Saratoga, N.Y. Northup was a violinist and well-known, respectable man about town. One day, he caught the attention of two white men claiming themselves to be “talent scouts.” The two men invited him to dinner and offered him a job playing violin for a traveling circus. Northup trusted the men and took the deal, but the next day woke up to shackles and brick walls; he had been drugged and kidnapped to be sold into slavery.
    .

Northup was enslaved for 12 years on various plantation homes in Louisiana from 1841 to 1852, legally being released on Jan. 4, 1853. After seeing the film and reading the book, Helton believes Northup was particularly targeted because he was educated. This fact gives the film an interesting angle because Northup is an outsider even among slaves.
    .
“My best guess is that Northup was introduced to the kidnappers as someone with some skills, particularly violin playing,” said Helton. “Northup was slow to believe the two had set him up.”
    .
For 12 years, Northup is owned by three masters in Louisiana until he meets a Canadian abolitionist who helps him begin his journey back home. The story he wrote down after his release was published after the popular “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”. He feels the film and book can create a safe place for people to start a debate on the issue of slavery.
    .
“The film has the potential of creating space where people can talk about the legacy of slavery in our country,” Helton said. “Northup’s story helps people to experience, in a limited way, how bad slavery was, and he shows in his book that slavery dehumanized both the slave and the slave owner.”
    .
Northup, played by British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, witnesses horrid, vile actions during his years as a slave. It was his desperation and willingness to survive which ultimately redelivers him into freedom. Questions Helton brought to the audience’s mind included, “If God is the god of both the slave and the free, then why are some slaves?” and “If God is in charge, how did the master become God?” These are areas Northup’s writing explores, “pitting God’s sovereignty against human responsibility,” according to Helton.
    .
The film has already won eight awards and is up for Best Picture at the Oscars on March 2. Helton hopes the film will be a vehicle for the public to use in the debate of racism, religion and human trafficking.
    .
“I think Northup’s relevance for today is that he addresses enduring challenges,” Helton said. “His story is a story about human trafficking, which has received recent attention. His story raises the issue of respect for other cultures and reminds us that there are no easy answers, but there are no answers if we do nothing.”
