To be in a room with the likes of Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Steve McQueen, Jeff Nichols and so many filmmakers I love was so amazing!

  • troll meltdown AGAIN

Angie is still the same kind, caring super-talented person she was as a child, and Brad clearly loves her just the way she is. If you are a mother, then, yes, you know know that your priorities change and you never thought your heart could be so full of love. I sense that one of reasons that Brad loves Angie so much is how very sweet and loving she is. If you listen to Angie’s words and note her actions, that sweetness and love has always been there.- she had some sad moments in her teens, but has NEVER HURT ANYONE. Forget the tab lies- save your judginess for the actual criminals and (formerly?) “wild” folk of Hollywood- Halle, RDJ, Rebbeca, Johnny, Reese, Jason, Paris, Nichole, Lindsey, Justin- heck, Sandy has way more dirt in her past considering her decade long love affair with a guy who has tons of N*zi artifacts and Heils it up for the cameras- hopefully Miss B has “changed” for the sake of her son…the list goes on & on and Angie is not on it.

12 Years a Slave’ wins big at Independent Spirit Awards

    Rebecca Ford The Hollywood Reporter

The Independent Spirit Awards, which took place in a tent on the Santa Monica beach on Saturday, was a mix of lively fun, humor and some very emotional acceptance speeches.

The big winner of the night was “12 Years a Slave,” which won the top award of best feature. Also, Lupita Nyong’o won for best supporting female and John Ridley won for best screenplay.

On the day before the Oscars, many of Hollywood’s biggest stars dodged the light rain, walked the blue carpet and gathered in the giant tent overlooking the ocean in Santa Monica. Among the many in attendance were Brad Pitt (who produced “12 Years a Slave”) with Angelina Jolie and a slew of presenters including Kristen Bell, Andy Samberg, Anna Kendrick, John Hamm, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jeremy Renner and Elisabeth Moss.

Many stars seemed to let loose at the event (hosted by Patton Oswalt), which had a more relaxed feel to it than what can be expected from Sunday’s awards show. Shailene Woodley danced along during a performance of “Lean on Me,” Julie Delpy ditched her heels once inside the show and Pitt shared a friendly “congratulations” with Cate Blanchett after her win.

Cate Blanchett, who won for best female lead, started her acceptance speech with a question: “Why were there only five female nominations, and six male nominations?”

The actress then moved on to praise her director Woody Allen for making films, independently, and, on top of that, making one per year. “It was an amazing opportunity,” she said of working on “Blue Jasmine.”

Matthew McConaughey won for best actor for “Dallas Buyers Club.” He spoke about the strong year in independent film, which also included his film “Mud,” which was honored with a special award earlier in the night.

“A good independent film is more than an experiment,” he said, saying that the best films were also important and entertaining.

McConaughey’s co-star Jared Leto, who won the best supporting male prize, gave one of the most unique acceptance speeches of the night.

“In case this is the last time I get to thank anyone, I wrote down a couple names,” the actor said, before sharing a long list of people he wanted to thank including Wayne Gretzky, the inventor of the zipper and “the makers of vegan butter.”

One of the most emotional speeches of the night came from “Fruitvale”director Ryan Coogler, who won the best first feature award. He spoke about Jonathan Ferrell, another young African-American man who was recently shot and killed by police, even though he was unarmed and looking for help after crashing his car.

“I can’t help but think if Jonathan Ferrell looked like Matthew McConaughey he would have been alive today,” said Coogler, who was given a standing ovation after his speech.

Ridley, the writer of “12 Years a Slave,” was also visibly moved when he was giving his speech. “As much as I thought the memoir in Solomon’s words was special I had no idea what I was a part of until I saw the film in Toronto,” he said.

Fellow “12 Years a Slave” winner Nyong’o, who received a standing ovation when she won, opened her acceptance speech with “Not a bad way to celebrate my birthday.”

The actress, who made her feature film debut with the role, credited her co-stars for making her do her best work: “You dared me you scared me and you prepared me.” She dedicated the award to her mother, who was at the show with her.

12 Years a Slave’ wins big at Independent Spirit Awards
Claudia Puig, USA TODAY 8:20 p.m. EST March 1, 201

Santa Monica, Calif.—The show went on, despite rain and blustery winds blowing through plastic tents erected on the beach for the Independent Spirits Awards Saturday.

Besides the rare Southern California downpour, the big story at the low-key event was how the awards could foreshadow the winners at the Oscars ceremony. 12 Years a Slave was the big winner, nabbing five awards including best feature. Top acting honors went to Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine and Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club.

The best supporting actress trophy was a fabulous 31st birthday present for Lupita Nyong’o, who won forportraying a brutalized slave in 12 Years a Slave. She dedicated her award to her mother.

“That beautiful woman drove me to rehearsals every day after school,” said Nyong’o. “Your love has driven me this far.”

She also thanked 12 Years co-star Chiwetel Ejiofor: “Your fortitude was our salvation.

12 Years a Slave also won awards for best director (Steve McQueen) best screenplay (John Ridley) and best cinematography (Sean Bobbit).

12 Years a Slave producer Brad Pitt spoke of his affection for the film and director Steve McQueen.

“We were banging on Steve’s door, after his other films,” said Pitt. “This is a film I personally love. It’s incredibly moving to me. To be a part of something like this doesn’t come along that often. It’s been a great, great experience. The risk was for me being a distraction in a film like this.”

Pitt also thanked the cast and the city of New Orleans, adding: “I shouldn’t be standing in front of Steve. Because we’re all here because of him…It’s interesting that it took a Brit to ask the question why more films haven’t been made in America about this part of our history.”

Angelina Jolie “Very Proud” of Brad Pitt’s 12 Years a Slave Best Feature Win at Independent Spirit Awards

Angelina Jolie couldn’t stop gushing over Brad Pitt at the Independent Spirit Awards.

After 12 Years a Slave took home Best Feature (and a ton of other accolades) at the relaxed awards show Saturday afternoon, the Oscar-winning actress told us exclusively, “I’m very proud of him. I am always very proud of him.”

Pitt not only appeared in the slave drama, but he also served as one of its producers.

Although the duo skipped the carpet at the Independent Spirit Awards, Jolie and Pitt snuggled up at a table inside of the event where the brunette beauty flashed her engagement ring.
