Chris Evans Taking a Break From Acting After Fulfilling Marvel Contracts

Chris Evans steps out with a pal to run some errands on Tuesday (March 4) in Studio City, Calif.

The 32-year-old actor just announced that after he fulfills his Marvel contracts, he will be taking a break from acting.

“I think when I’m done with this Marvel contract, I’ll take a little break from acting,” Chris told Glamour UK. “With acting, you’re one piece in a very big puzzle. It’s like you helped buy a gift but you don’t know what the gift is, so you come back and see the movie. Sometimes it’s nice, sometimes it’s tragic.”

Chris has appeared in many Marvel films including Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, and the upcoming Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

I understand that he literally had to work really hard to play Captain America, and I get what he’s saying, but still, that’s just beyond me? Take a “break from acting.” Please. He’s got money and he’s good-looking, all in all, he’s privileged, he’s not even remarkably talented, and yet he wants to take a break? You don’t see Robert Downey Jr or Jeremy Renner or Scarlett Johansson (Even though she’s pregnant now. Still, it’s a whole different story!) saying they are going to give acting a break, they put a lot of effort into their roles as well, they worked as much as he did, and they take risks as well, it’s part of being an actor? I mean?

BTW: Please, don’t get me wrong and please do not pull the “if you’re not a fan, then why are you leaving a comment? Hater much?” card on me, because that’s not even the point here, I just find it extremely annoying hearing some actor say they are going to “take a break from acting.” Specially a box-office one, such as Chris. If it weren’t for his role in Avengers and C.A. he’d be poorer and wouldn’t be as famous as he is now, even though he’s been around for years.

@Uh? #2: I hate when actors say they’re taking a break from acting too, but for me it’s just for my own selfish reasons of wanting to see more of them (pleeeaaase come back Ryan Gosling)

I have no problem with this guy, as an actor or person. What I do have a problem with is there being 5 Captain America movies released in the next 10 years. when will this comic book crap stop? it’s so unoriginal. get a new idea.

From reading other interviews with him and learning that he has social anxiety, I don’t think Chris likes being in the spotlight all that much. I’m just assuming here, but I’ve read that he feels too much pressure with being an actor. Which is completely understandable.

He never said he’s quitting the industry, he said acting. He just wants to focus on directing, he’s not going anywhere.

@beckett: I’m so tired of nerdy superhero movies :/

Yep, that’s exactly why Chris wants to have a break. I don’t blame him. Marvel churns them out and most are ******. Apart from Iron Man and Avengers most other Marvel movies were forgettable.

He actually sounds to me like he’s not very happy with what became of his films and his performance in it. I mean the “gift buying” part. Maybe he is unhappy about the way the Marvel films were done? Or his parts in the Avenger films? I admit that Captain America doesn’t seem like one of the guys the fans went crazy for – not like for Iron Man, Thor or Loki.

And yes, it sounds to me like he will maybe be more behind the camera as there is much more control and less spotlight (I also read about the anxiety stuff).

@Annie: I actually found the Thor movies nice too, they’ve got some really good actors that can make even “meh” storylines more interesting and fun to watch.

If you don’t like comic movies don’t watch them. Simple as that. I for one am glade to see Hollywood finally respecting the source material as opposed to sh*t movies like the original Batman films. If the man wants take a break don’t complain. If you have never seen London with Chris Evans check it out. Great performance by him.

@Uh? #2: I’m a huge Marvel fan so I feel like I know just about enough of the background on this to comment. From what I’ve gathered, Evans considered not taking the role because of the contract and because of the loss of anonymity [which is understandable - six films could span ten years of your life and, as other commenters have mentioned, he's suffered from social anxiety]. On top of this, he’s also started directing, with a film coming out this year I believe. So I think it’s less a break from work and more shifting into other areas. Besides, Marvel being such a huge franchise and his being such an iconic character, there is a LOT of work to be done, on set and off, including publicity.
The only issue I have with this article is what heading out to run errands has to do with a future break from acting…

go on take a break, but i would love to see more of your films…(so sad to hear that)
I admire your looks and your acting skills….
Im impatiently waiting for this Captain America after watching your other movies… not to mention im a huge fan of yours Chris Evans

Please dont judge his decision we all need a break…
