Soccer Star Robbie Rogers on Coming Out: It Was For My Sanity & Happiness

Robbie Rogers keeps his total concentration on the soccer ball in this brand new feature from Flaunt magazine’s latest issue.

Here’s what the 26-year-old openly gay soccer star had to share with the mag:

On his past inner conflict: “There were a lot of moments where I was just miserable when I should’ve been happy. ‘Guess I’ll go play professional soccer in England!’ but I’m still miserable. Being closeted was affecting the way I played; it was affecting my relationships. It just really destroys you—your mental health and your confidence. I was just like, ‘I’m over this.’”

On his coming out: “Just getting some sh*t off my chest. For me it was just for my sanity, for my happiness.”

On not wanting to tweet: “Now I don’t even really tweet because if you say anything, people object. You post a picture of your dog and people respond, ‘You shouldn’t be with your dog, you should be training.’ And it’s like, are you f*cking kidding me?”

Why do you always write “26-year-old openly gay soccer star”?

This is exactly why people need to “come out” in the first place. Because people make it out to be some sort of “interesting fact”, as if it’s something unusual, when it shouldn’t be!

    Whoever he is.

  • Tweedle

I don’t think the label “star” applies to him. Now, it would have been a headline if CR9 came out or let’s say wayne rooney.
