Vogue's Anna Wintour Addresses Kim Kardashian/Kanye West Cover & All the Related Controversy

Anna Wintour has opened up about the Kim Kardashian and Kanye West cover of Vogue‘s April 2014 issue.

“Part of the pleasure of editing Vogue, one that lies in a long tradition of this magazine, is being able to feature those who define the culture at any given moment, who stir things up, whose presence in the world shapes the way it looks and influences the way we see it. I think we can all agree on the fact that that role is currently being played by Kim and Kanye to a T. (Or perhaps that should be to a K?),” the 64-year-old editor in chief wrote in her letter from the editor.

“As for the cover, my opinion is that it is both charming and touching, and it was, I should add, entirely our idea to do it; you may have read that Kanye begged me to put his fiancée on Vogue‘s cover,” Anna added. “He did nothing of the sort. The gossip might make better reading, but the simple fact of the matter is that it isn’t true.”

So there you have it!

    Whatever!!! Says:

How pathetic that an editor of Vogue feels the public pressure to even issue such a statement. Obviously she is aware that the majority of the public finds this a low brow choice and joke for a publication with such (former) regard. Too late to save face. Vogue is no longer officially regarded as the fashion bible. It’s literally as gross as Life & Style or InTouch magazines.

    rest in peace, vogue!

Kanye made Anna suck his ****

    jstntm Says:

Anna is completely delusional. If she thinks the cover is charming and touching she’s nuts. She’s featuring two of the most egotistical, self-absorbed, classless pieces of crap the world ever produced, and she thinks that is just fine and dandy. The woman is in need of psychological help.

  8. 8
    Mikayla Says:

Kim Kardashian made her money in the porn industry. First porno actress on the cover of Vogue. Anna Wintour must be proud.

  9. 9
    Amy Says:

It’s time for Anna Wintour to retire then. Everyone email Conde Nast and let them know you won’t buy another copy of Vogue as long as Anna Wintour is the editor in chief.

    Helene Says:

I’m happy to see them on the cover. I love the two of them together and what a pretty little baby North is. I was thinking the other day: people get on Kim’s case for being a talentless woman, yet they idolize fashion models. What’s the difference? She models, she helps to create clothing lines, etc. People like Kate Moss and Cara Delevigne have long histories of drug use, alcoholism, violence and other gross habits, yet people bow down to them. Those models are doing the same thing: having their picture taken for a living and getting paid ridiculous sums to do so. Think about Naomi Campbell physically abusing her assistants, drugged up on yachts with billionaires, etc., yet she’ll go down in history as one of the greatest supermodels ever. People need to get over hating on Kim. She’s gorgeous and I’m happy she got the cover.

    NekoFirefoxy Says:

I completely disagree to that statement of Anna Wintour. I think it’s a horrible sign to let people who prefer a lavish lifestyle accompanied by rude behavior define a part of today’s culture.

Vogue had been quite a “bible” for me. It was inspiring regarding fashion and style in general but putting these two people on the cover I’m honestly disappointed about the direction Vogue had been going to.

The delusions of grandeur and extravagance shouldn’t be key notes proclaimed by such a huge magazine.

That’s just another step in the downfall of a once great magazine.

    Lili Says:

Someone please replace this woman before she destroys Vogue completely.

  13. 13
    huh Says:

the only people who are to blame are the ones who are going to buy this issue. sad comment if this old lady thinks Kim K has defined our culture by doing home p orn movies. wow or the low brow lackey’s

  14. 14
    Cathy Says:

The fact that a certain image on a magazine cover is getting to you so profoundly that you are requesting to boycott or that the value of the magazine has suddenly decreased is pathetic. Get over it. If u don’t like it, don’t buy it & move on, not like u buy every single issue anyway. By posting negative comments u are just contributing to the reason why the public letter had to be issued.

    Amy Says:

Umm… Kim is a Porn Star, not a model. Google it.

  16. 16
    Helene Says:

And I also want to add that since people will probably jump on me for comparing Kim to Kate Moss: I’m not saying they’re the same. Sure, Kate Moss has had an enormous impact on fashion. What I AM saying is that they ultimately do the exact same job which is look beautiful, model clothes, live lavish lifestyles, mingle amongst famous people, and so on. There is no difference at all in terms of “talent” or job description. If anything, Kim doesn’t waste her body away with drugs and smashing hotel rooms a la Kate Moss.

  17. 17
    Rose Says:

She needs to retire… Kayne is all the things she described, but Kim is a reality star that gets lucky with having a kid with an artist. I want a refund on my subscription. This is as bad as Lagerfeld making KStew the face of his campaign. They’re officially to old to be deciding what it is relevant in fashion and art…

    Just me Says:

Ms. Wintour Kim Kardashian may shape the world as YOU see it. Speak for yourself. As you can see now, people with a brain don’t want an uneducated porno fool like Kim K. to define the world around them. I hope you get the biggest backlash of your like for putting these two egotistical nobodies on the cover of Vogue.

  20. 20
    Just me Says:

    @NekoFirefoxy: Agree!

  21. 21
    Ava Says:

This is the worst decision Vogue has ever made and a sign that the desperation to stay relevant had reached critical mass. Sad day for Vogue magazine, folks.

  22. 22
    Sheyenne Says:

Why is this such a big deal!? They can choose whoever they want to be on the cover of their magazine. Yeah Kim and Kanye have done some questionable stuff but who hasn’t. The only difference is that their celebrities and people think they can judge and say whatever they want about them. It’s a freaking magazine … get over it. If I was Anna Wintour I wouldn’t have cared to say anything but she did it to prove all those negative people who made up rumors wrong. Lovely cover Kim and Kanye!

  23. 23
    Kitty Says:

It’s a sad world that is shaped by trash like Kim K and it isn’t my world. I guess Vogue now belongs to that other place where trash resides. Along with Anna Wintour.

  24. 24
    maisy RL Says:

…wow. This is ridiculous. Thankfully some institutions have standards: the hollywood walk of fame not giving Kim K a star…never thought they’d hold up their principles higher than Vogue. Unfortunately Vogue, like all other print publications, are dying a slow death. To extend their life, they need to sell more copies and the best way to do that is to put people on the cover that will sell. Enter Kimye. Still good to know A-listers, smart intellectuals, really talented folks don’t respect/like Kim K. And poor Beyonce has to attend this trashy wedding through Jay Z’s association with Kanye.

  25. 25
    SorryNOTsorry Says:

NOT only did Kanye beg but he also wants her to clear his name! Anna I love you but please be quiet! You’re not fooling anyone. For the past year all Kanye has done was promote kim and saying “there’s no reason kim shouldn’t be on the cover of vogue” he was pissed she was cut out of a vogue picture of the couple from the met ball and the list goes on! There’s a reason she was never on vogue and a reason for him
To complain about it. Please if Anna wanted her on the cover it’d would’ve been a long time ago. He most definitely begged!!

Kanye basically complained in the media that kim hasn’t been on vogue. Imagine what he said to Anna in private? C’mon people get your head out of your asses. Kanye is the biggest hot head. Anna would never put kim on the cover alone, ever! So she chose this angle of this “power couple” and celebrity family. Notice Kim’s still not on it alone and I don’t think, I hope, she won’t ever be on the cover alone.
    She doesn’t deserve it.

Fun fact: Kim cheated on Reggie with Kanye. She’s not an innocent sex tape victim this is who she is, a **** dripping in chanel and Botox.

  26. 26
    Tom Says:

There’s a reason Wintour didn’t get a front row seat at the Valentino show this year , Wintour should retire, Vogue has become as tacky as all the others.

  27. 27
    Avery Says:

I think Ann Wintour’s decision to put those pair of disgusting muppetts on the front of Vogue is fabulous. Just shows her and the fashion industry up for what they really are. A group of self entitled air heads with narcissistic personalities. Totally devoid of anything resembling reality.

  28. 28
    That's Right Says:

Apparently, the uproar is huge which is great!! Vogue’s Facebook page is flooded with disdain for this decision. Of course, Anna is not going to go against the golden payoff she received and tell the truth. We’ll just have to wait and see if she can save face when the sales and subscriptions go down the toilet. RIHELL Vogue and Anna!

  29. 29
    Alaia Says:

I’m just disappointed that Anna caved in. I hope people avoid the cover like a plague.

  30. 30
    Eddy Says:

Anna Wintour is as repulsive as is her ‘trademark’ hairstyle and sandles. Who annointed this woman as the fashion maven? Who knows the real truth as why she put the equally hideous Kim & Kanye on the cover. May be just for the simple publicity it seems to be drumming up. I believe she killed any credibility that Vogue had left with this move.

  31. 31
    Amy Says:

    @That’s Right:

Great. I’m glad people are commenting on Facebook. :)

  32. 32
    Mallory Says:

You guys are idiots. Anna and the rest of the heads at Vogue are geniuses. They knew how much buzz this would cause, and you all are just proving their point. People either love or hate Kimye, as a couple or as individuals. They knew people would be blowing up about this, and thats what you all are doing. Anna is 100% correct, they are a HUGE influence in our culture, whether it’s his music or her fashion influence, or if it’s us making fun of their stupidity. Vogue knows that they’re doing.

  33. 33
    Diaper Butt Kim K. Says:

I bet Kim is crying right now because she is not receiving the response she was hoping for from the public she try so hard to get to like her. Well dump butt the truth of how everyone really feels about you and your bully Kanye West has come home to roost! ENJOY!!!!!

  34. 34
    That's Right Says:

Having the public talk about their dislike of them is not always positive. Anna will pay for it in the end with down subscriptions, lack of sales for this book, and returned subscriptions of this book. Plus since she allowed this travesty eventually if sales are down the magazine price will go down. How many designers do you think will be happy about this that advertise in Vogue??? Not many if the sales flop and thus advertising dollars will go down. Marketing genius? Only if they make money but so far from what I’ve been reading it will be loosing and Vogue has become the laughing stock of the fashion world. Next the Real Housewives of ____________, you feel in the blank.

They better have a helluva May cover to make up this mess.

  35. 35
    Scarlett Says:

Just goes to show how Vogue like other print mediums and magazines are losing money and becoming desperate to stay financially solvent? Vogue as been circling the drain for awhile. It’s become less about fashion and more about trying to be provocative and edgy to generate interest and sales. I mean Lena Dunham? Lena Dunham may be interesting but she’s 100% not a fashionista. And Kim K.? Really? Yeah, this issue will gain attention but will it sell? Being inflammatory doesn’t necessarily translate to sales.

  36. 36
    Kitty Says:

@Mallory: You don’t know much about marketing, do you? It’s only good if it pays off! If people are outraged and don’t buy, if she loses subscriptions and the overall sales go down, in general, then it is a huge fiasco. This is what will happen as the fashion world itself is in an uproar over this. Nobody wants to touch these ****** with a 10 foot pole and for good reason. Anna Wintour just committed a huge mistake, one that Vogue will pay for.

    jstntm Says:

Just read the Facebook comments on the Vogue site, which are more negative than even I expected. A photographer said it best, though, when he posted that Vogue is meant to showcase influential women and give girls something to aspire to, and nobody should aspire to be Kim Kardashian. Perfectly said!!

  38. 38
    Jan Says:

Vogue – good trash diving, thought you had more class than this. Don’t you know your audience? The message I’m getting here is that if I show off my V—– on a home made porn video and make it public, I will become a star and appear on Vogue. Really? Don’t cater to her narcissism and exhibitionism needs. She is nobody and either is he.

  39. 39

Don’t forget to go to the Vogue site and let them know your comments about this outrageous decision by Anna Wintour to feature these two freak show clowns on Vogue’s cover.

    @ Helene Says:

There are billions of people on this earth – find someone actually worthy of your time and admiration.

Kim is not a model, and living a lavish lifestyle is not a job, and not something to admire. Frankly, Kim’s influence is a disease. Young women should not be encouraged to do pornography, butcher their bodies and faces, and marry a series of men, all to “live a lavish lifestyle.” Her only influence on fashion is a constant parade of “what not to wear.”

Women are an amazing, talented bunch. Kim is only a disgrace to women, the lowest of the low. And Anna is pathetic for fawning over Kayne – another example of a waste of talent, an enormous ego, and someone who does nothing for anyone but himself.

  41. 41
    essie Says:

wow Vogue has definitely lost its lustre….. it is now a fashion book for reality stars

  42. 42
    Scarlett Says:

@@ Helene: I agree with everything you just posted. Kim K. is not a role model for young women…this is not the vacuous, empty and insubstantial persona that we want young women to emulate. Trust me on this.

  43. 43
    essie Says:

all the cover needs is the tagline ‘Kim tries on wedding dresses, they’re just like us!’

  44. 44
    Coy Says:

I agree with a comment earlier, people posting disgusting & bizarre messages of opinion, not fact, about celebrities is pathetic. It’s nothing new for people receive accolades they do not deserve. I’ve never thought to post a message against them. It never dawned on me. Probably because I haven’t been emotionally attached to celebrities since I was in high school, that and…perhaps I’m further along on the evolution scale. lol. Seems weird.

Any way, I just wanted to point out. that more than likely, for every negative comment made on FB or where ever. There are two fans actually purchasing the magazine. You’re not reading about the people who are purchasing. People can cancel their subscriptions but guaranteed they’ll re-subscribe within 6 months. Memories are short and Old habits die hard. But really, carry own. It seems that this is fulfilling something in your souls. lol.

    scallywag Says:

Of course the more conspicuous question, especially over at ‘Conde Nasty’ is by succumbing to the mundane and downtrodden is whether the journal’s pedigree by intimation has taken a major tumbling down the aspirational blocks or whether the outlet felt compelled to relent in the hope of remaining tabloid relevant as the media world all round has to reinvent itself given our society’s vigilant absorption of the trite and banal?

Never mind pimp momma Kris Jenner just said yes to the September cover…

    Looselipz Says:

The worst message of all is the condoning of Kim Kardashian as a cover model. This chick doesn’t even resemble herself anymore from all the plastic surgeries she’s had. To hear anyone say she’s beautiful is frightening. It’s all fake, generated by a surgeon. I love the op-roar and backlash. Unfortunately it just gives these idiots more attention. Next they’ll be on the cover of parenting magazine. I mean really, this is the downfall of society…

    Aranka Paul Says:

The fact that Kim and Kanye are on the cover is not disturbing. What is disturbing is that Anna Wintour for some reason think that these two define modern fashion image. They do not. Kim has repeatedly proved not to have an iota of fashion sense (I can list a whole bunch of outfits that could induce vomitting) and for that reason alone they should not have appeared on the cover of the fashion driven magazine like Vogue, Let’s face it, Vogue is more or less filled with advertisements but the models who model the advertised products stand for cutting edge in the fashion world. To the person who compared Kim to Kate Moss I am saying that even though Kate had coined the look “heroine chic” and is not lilly white (use of drugs etc), the woman does have fashion sense (and that’s what is the crux of the story – FASHION.). Kate Moss and other supermodels have that special ingredient that makes them stand out from other folks. It is a mix of sexappeal, right body shape, face expression and fluidity of motion (none of which Kim K has). Kim looks like a peasant woman from Armenia with huge but and huge boobs with cleverly applied makeup. Vogue or no Vogue, Anna or no Anna, Kim will remain stubby, short, wide hipped middle age woman. END OF STORY

I think they both look amazing and hot together! And how cute is north??? They really look like they are madly in love together.

    All the best!

    Mallory Says:

@Kitty: do you know how was on the March issue of vogue? How about the February? Now the May issue, everyone knows who it is. They are both HUGE in the world of fashion. Google pictures of Kim OR Kanye with any famous designer, front row at a fashion show, or even look on Kim’s Instagram at all of the clothes designers sent her freaking newborn. And anyone who does have a subscription won’t cancel over one issue, let’s be real. And this wasn’t just Anna’s decision, but she’s been the editor in chief of Vogue magazine for more than 20 years, she’s got this.

  59. 59
    Mallory Says:

@That’s Right: like I said to Kitty, do you know who was on the February or March issue of Vogue? And if you do, I guarantee you 95% of people on this thread do not. But everyone knows who’s on the April issue. Anna has been editor in chief of Vogue magazine for more than 20 years, if it was going to cause as much backlash as you think, she wouldn’t have done it. And trust me, designers love Kim and Kanye for this exact reason, whether you want to admit it or not, they are incredibly influential. Again, google these two with designers or at fashion shows, you’ll get a million results.

  60. 60
    DD Says:

what is the big deal? anybody who still supports Vogue as a magazine is deluded. Vogue has become 90% ads and if you’re saving up for the $10,000 dresses well, good luck. I’m young and female and while I love fashion this magazine isn’t about fashion anymore. It’s about selling you crap. Just like they are trying to sell you Kanye and Kim. Don’t act so surprised – and if you are surprised, you are probably stupid in the head.

    Anna Says:

NO – we cannot all agree.

    Anna Wintour -
The 2 people you have on the April cover of your magazine does not define the culture nor do their presence shape and influence the world I LIVE IN ! Maybe the tabloid world and yours now, sadly. IMO, with one cover you have taken the luster off “the long tradition” of your magazine.
It is now just another magazine with THAT family on it… that people look at the cover, maybe flip through but then put back on the shelf. Indifferent to THEM, but YOU…..YOUR WORD & OPINION holds little value now. Remember Ryan Seacrest??? Your editor’s note is cloying & desparate – are you trying to copy Graydon at Vanity Fair? But hey, no hard feelings, maybe now we call all be influence to have “our mouth impregnated”!
I will if you will, darling………….

Are you telling us you have been influenced by that hideous style you call “fashion”????

HER style (term used loosely) is commented on, Yes, but who is influenced by it???

    People AVOID it.

When has she been lauded as a fashion icon or trendsetter??? Other than on the sites they pay to promote their trash.

It’s hilarious she out prancing around in that long pink dress with those sandals that do not go well much less have any type of fashion style or sense.

Have you seen the SEARS clothing???? FASHION????

As for the musical influence : Let’s go get our ‘mouths impregnated.”

I know who is on the cover of the Feb, March & April issues.
You asked for MAY???? I doubt you even know that.
Sitting at a couple of fashion shows over this past ONE year with a few, NOT with ANY fashion designer, does not make ANYONE, as you say, HUGE in the fashion world. If you were so in tune to all of this you would know there are so many others who attend & have attended shows for YEARS and their presence is appreciated by ALL the designers who value their opinion of their designs.
INSTAGRAM – yes, look at it.again…..I bet you will find the K-star is the only one who is so desparate to let the world know of “designer” baby gifts. Believe me, she is not the only one who has receive these types of gifts – it’s just others or not as crass as she is & have class in their quiet acknowledgement of the gifts to the giver – NOT the WORLD! Oh excuse, maybe you can’t see this on her INSTAGRAM – I realize you have to wade through all though AMAZING photoshopped selfies of the K-star with her a$$ in your face!

@Mikayla: Sadly, this has been the trend with this publication in recent years. Ms Wintour knows all too well her power in LEADING, rather than following the “cultural” trends and promoting people and opinions, and she omitted to address that side of the picture.

I miss when the magazine used actual models and let us enjoy the fashions without having them defined by celebrity culture, something that lots of thinking women can really do without.

  80. 80

When was the last time Naomi Campbell had an American Vogue cover? She might make a foreign one with the exception of British Vogue, but American and British Vogue hardly ever feature women of color on their magazines. Vogue is going out of business. Next is Miley Cyrus or Kendall Jenner. Sad. It is time to replace Anna Wintour.

The reason I liked Vogue wasn’t a trashy magazine. Sorry but I’m not buying Vogue anymore.

Fire that desperate tasteless Anna Wintour– about time– just cancelled my Vogue subscription..

    Crys Says:

This is just sad. This WAS the fashion bible. It is now sitting next to star magazine with the other cheap gossip magazines. Anna sad to say but time to hand over the throne to someone who has some scruples.

    Ayanna Costa Says:

I never really looked at vogue because they always shut out most of the actors of color especially women, but now after seeing that they would allow trash like Kanye and Kim I fell as though it was a big slap in the face to say that women of color were not desirable and now you have a *** bucket and her puppet on the cover…

    Question Says:

I wonder how this will affect other legitimate stars/artist and their decision to do Vogue. I mean now it’s no longer can be regarded an honor to be on Vogue. Anyone can be on there now as far as I can see. Anna can’t snub someone because of their background, lack of talent and definitely not because of lack of fashion sense, because Kim has ZERO fashion sense, as well as Kanye. His fashion line is laughable at best.
Anna should have really thought this through. Correct me if I am wrong but Vogue as far as I know has never had a rapper on their cover, hell barely any musician, unless it’s female. Then on top of that she put a reality TV, tabloid, do nothing, famewhore on her cover. What message do that send to true talent be it a model, artist, actress, actor, or musicians. The covenant level of Vogue has been compromised by this. No longer will Vogue be known for being the one magazine everyone may strive for but on very few can get on.
Sad, sad, sad, and gloomy day in the fashion world and for fashionistas who regarded Anna as the guru of fashion & prestige.

Anna is completely delusional. Vogue down the drain soon hopefully, no one buys this issue , we can only hope the pigs don’t get fatter

    Nicole Says:

What is with the placement of their hands?! Gives me the creeps. Vogues isn’t deigned to make things beautiful, not make it’s customers uncomfortable. Too bad – seeing a (financially) successful interracial couple could have made for beautiful press in this brave new world.

  97. 97
    Nicole Says:

*Correction – Vogue is designed to make things beautiful

    Nicole Says:

If Wintour wanted buzz, she got it. If she wanted sales and respect, I think time will show she blew it. While not a fan of K&K, I think the cover could have done a flattering photo of a beautiful interracial couple. What in the hell is up with the placement of his hands?! How did this get by editors?

    Todd Says:

I wasn’t going to comment on this at all. I’ve decided the less print, good or bad, these two receive the better. Anna Wintour is another matter altogether. She has mistaken provocateur with bully and God only knows what STRENGTH of CHARACTER she finds in this publicity vampire and as far as guts go, people with GUTS don’t WHINE and exactly HOW much courage does it take to face a spotlight you have cajoled, hogged and pushed your way into??? A.W. RIP Vogue April Issue 2014

Anna Wintour will be able to mark this moment as the one where Vogue jumped the shark. Bravo.

    SRoberts Says:

Maybe Anna caved to Kanye’s begging but has the last laugh as this is the April issue. April Fools is the perfect description of Kimye. The one I feel sorry for is the younger sister, Kendal, who
looks to have a promising career as a model. She probably wants to pull the covers over her head !

    In The Know Says:

Want to know who the real winner is in this???…..BRITISH VOGUE.

That’s right. British Vogue has long been held as the defacto standard of excellence and being far ahead of the curve to real fashion insiders.

Wintour’s career damaging gaffe cements British Vogue as the credible glossy leader in international fashion reportage

Why do you think people like Alexander McQueen and David Koma come out of London???

    remember da truth Says:

The only reason for Sarah Michelle Gellar to try to lead a backlash is she’s trying to promote that she’s still around and has a new show. Trying to get all the people who are envious of another’s success to watch her show and like her for validating their lazy meanness. Do you see intelligent dignified people like Meryl Streep spending their time complaining about the Kardashians on social media or websites? If you want to cancel a subscription because you don’t like the direction of the magazine, do so quietly and move on with your life. Those who spend time complaining are no better than those they are complaining about – at least the Kardashians are productive with their lives and don’t waste time hating people they don’t know for being successful.

    Kirstin Says:

Really?? What terrible mean things people will say about a couple most of us will never meet. How pathetic your lives must be that you have let a picture on a magazine cover upset you this much.

    Ray Says:

I admit when I first saw the cover, I was disappointed. This immediately made me feel like a judgmental person.

But then I asked myself how I’d feel if Lupita Nyong’o were featured on a Vogue cover, and thought ‘NO. It would make my freakin’ day.’

Feeling disappointment doesn’t immediately mean a presence of bias or envy, but that you have certain expectations from Vogue. As a cultural arbiter of art and fashion, Vogue has a creative/social responsibility to its readers. While it’s Vogue’s prerogative to put Kim Kardashian and Kanye West on the cover, it is also yours to actively voice your objections.

I wrote more about this in my blog! Please check it out at:

@jstntm: I’ll bet you a pair of Jimmy Choos that either 1) Wintour is lying through her teeth, or 2) that statement was actually issued by some flunky.
