Inside the 'Good Wife' Shocker: Why Was [SPOILER] Killed Off?

Talk about major shocker! One of the longtime main cast members of The Good Wife was killed off during tonight’s episode (March 23) and we are so sad right now.

CBS has been billing the past three episodes, including tonight’s shocker, as a major event and now we know why.

The episode followed Josh Charles‘ character Will Gardner trying to get his client played by Hunter Parrish off of a murder charge. It also followed Julianna Margulies‘ character Alicia Florrick being pursued by the Office of Public Integrity, who told her that Will was ready to give testimony against her husband Peter in an election rigging case.

Sadly, Will Gardner (Josh Charles) was shot and killed during a courtroom shooting by his deranged client. While this is a big shocker for fans of the show, this has been in development for over a year.

Josh asked the producers of the show to let him out of his contract at the end of the previous season, according to Deadline. His co-star and the show’s producer, Julianna Margulies, was able to convince him to stay on for the current fifth season so that the writers could have a chance to write him off the show. The entire main cast of the series was informed of his impending exit at the end of the last season and Josh even directed two episodes this year to help ease the transition.

“The pleasure has been all mine. I’ve learned so much working with both of you & I’m in awe of your talent & storytelling,” Josh tweeted to the writers of the show after the episode aired.

Please put spoilers after the jump, Jared! It’s easy to accidentally see something you don’t want to.

My husband and I love to watch The Good Wife. It is our favorite show! We are shocked about Will leaving the show. It will not be the same without him. We hope that this change will not effect the shows popularity. We love all of the actors and the realationship between Will and Felisha was so interesting to watch. They just seem to fit. I hope that I am still so crazy over the show. It will take time to get over Will leaving.

This just makes me so upset and mad. This will probably be the beginning of the end for this show. Anyone that I know, myself included, wanted Will and Alisha together at least in the end and now that is not a possibility. So after the initial shock of this wears off, it will probably die a slow death. What a let down.

I have been a loyal fan of the GW from the beginning. I am so pissed that Will had to be killed off this wonderful show … one of only a few on the major networks. I so hope this won’t be the beginning of the end of the GW. Previews indicate MJ Fox may take his place … I hope not … and please… please change the time slot so that fans don’t have to endure The Amazing Race … a ridiculous show

I’m so upset they killed off Josh Charles!!! I’m still in shock! I’m sorry
but…..Michael J. Fox?????? I have a tremendous respect for him but
he’s no Josh Charles. The chemistry was so good between Charles and Margulies. I actually thought in the last two episodes they were going to get them back together. I’m honestly thinking about not watching it anymore!!!!!

    Lee Says:

Viewers understand that actors leave shows. However, the writers of The Good Wife not only chose a tragic and senseless ending to Will’s young, vibrant life (his own innocent client brutally kills him; they could have at least had Will die in an act of love to protect Alicia or someone else), but they also chose to not give viewers the space to mourn Will’s death by letting us immediately see scenes from upcoming episodes where everything appears to be back to normal as they attempt to replace Will’s position with the character played by Michael J. Fox. (No offense to MJF, but the writers did not set his new role up for success by showing us this immediately). This writers’ approach was extremely insensitive for the viewers, and it is understandable why the reactions from those who regularly watch the show (including myself) are extremely negative. This insensitivity to viewers’ needs might lead to the demise of this show.

    Kin Says:

There are many ways they could have made Will disappear and this was the worst. They could have had him go into witness protection or have to leave the country or the state at least or anything they would leave an opening for a future guest appearance and the possibility of many creative storylines. Instead we get something that does not respect the character of Will Gardner and had such a bad storyline leading to his death with bad interactions between he and Alicia. That last scene between Will and Alicia was so badly written, surprisingly so for a show that otherwise has shown good writing. Worst writing in ending a tv show character and worst writing on this show so far. Really not that Will’s gone, which does suck but because they did such a hatchet on it.

How sad! I love Josh Charles in everything he has done. I read he wanted to leav e, but.why kill him? They could have had him leave without in a way that made it possible for a return or guest appearances, as they did.on Ncis with Ziva leaving. This ends the show for me!

    rhybeckah Says:

People-get over yourselves! It’s television- not real life! I LOVE this show and ALL of its wonderful characters! So SAD that Will (Josh Charles) is gone, but looking forward to seeing Michael J. Fox and they should also increase the appearances of Elspeth! Hint, Hint! She’s such a joy to watch!
Good luck Josh Charles! Hope to see you again soon! Though you’ll be very missed on The Good Wife.
Also, I LOVE the Sunday lineup of 60 Minutes, The Amazing Race, and The Good Wife – PLEASE DON’T CHANGE IT!

    MJ Says:

The Good Wife is my husband’s & my favorite show . We’ve never missed an episode since 2009. Like everyone else, we were shocked at why Josh Charles’ character Will had to die in senseless way. Very very sad…

I’ve neve right before for convey my opinion. But after I watched this episode I must say something. Will’s dead suck.I’ll never going to see the serie again.Without the chemistry between Alicia and Will see the serie is pointless.

I love the GW show & I will miss Will-however, it’s a great show & I will continue to watch

    Derrick Fridge Says:

Shocked and totally didn’t see that coming, or Josh’s Going. I think the reaction that other posters have had on here, gives a good idea how well loved his character was. I also think all of the anger in the previous comments, represent what the character on the show will be feeling. It just goes to show the quality of the writing and the acting on the show, that we can all feel so emotionally connected to the characters and our instant feeling of loss. I will continue to watch the show, as I think it would be disrespectful to the other really great actors on the show to just stop over one loss.

It’s nice to see that they will be bringing in the LG characters more as well in the upcoming episodes. I think the loss is going to effect each character in different ways, and it appears some will be going through some really BIG personality changes. I personally look forward to see the progression.

    No Says:

That’s it… In out . Not worth my money or time now. Will and Alicia were the only reason I watched . Bloody hell josh

    Thank you “rhybeckah”.
People. Get a grip. It’s tel-e-vi-sion. I know it’s hard to process but these folks are not real. Yes, it was “shocking” that they killed of Will, but it was also a surprising and audacious gut check that only makes me more curious about where this impeccably written and produced show will go from here.

Asians can hear, and see what you’re visually thinking.
THIS IS NOT A JOKE OR A MEME! This is the absolute complete truth!!!!
Asians hide their mind reading abilities by a lot of them having completely expressionless faces so they don’t accidentally show facial expressions when people think things they don’t like, find funny, astonishing, etc, Asians segregate so their not nearly as susceptible to that happening.
Asians also segregate, and are untalkative to avoid accidentally saying things that are similar to what people are thinking and going to say.
All Asians are keeping their mind reading abilities a secret, they don’t want ANYONE to know they can read minds! They value hiding it more than their own lives!!!
Try thinking, and visually picturing things as wild as you can when you are around Asians, it works if you try enough!!! Also look for Asians who give people dirty/particular looks for what appears to be for completely no reason.

  19. 19

These 4 links show it is obvious that Asians can read minds!!!!!
. (this one is very obvious that the Asian guy could visually see what the guy was picturing in his head)
. (there was no way it was a coincidence when she said exactly what the guy thought at the very moment that he thought it)

  20. 20
EAST ASIANS CAN READ MINDS!!!! Says: (this person mentions 4 separate encounters he had with different mind reading Asians, all very obvious they can read minds)
. (this one clearly states they were not looking at the Asian woman, so it’s because she can read minds)

Just saying someone is killed off is something of a spoiler! Jeez, then

    lalla Says:

I always thought they’ll end up together…their relationship was the most interesting part of the show,at least for me…and there was no closure at all…he was just shot and that’s it. I really hate this, they could have sent him somewhere so there’s still possibility for a happy ending between the two of them…now, I’m not sure it will be worth watching anymore…we shall see…

    henrietta watson Says:

I really want her to leave her husband. He is a jerk. I wanted her to
get back with Will and wish you didn’t kill him off but left some way that
he could have come back at a future date. His replacement is so wrong for this show. Altho he is a great actor, he is not right in this situation.

Yes, I know it is just a show but if we didn’t enjoy it so much, we wouldn’t
care what happened to the characters. You drew us in and then dropped
us off a cliff. I don’t think you can revive the story with continuing with
his replacement. It changes the story. Also being a good wife doesn’t
    mean staying with a jerk.

  24. 24
    Brooks Says:

Obviously, I, too, am heartbroken and sore-distressed over Will’s untimely demise. I am excited for Josh Charles’ future and wish him well in his new acting endeavors. After seeing the previews of Alicia Florick going into a drunken depression, I am disappointed to see this lovely, classy, strong woman down-spiral. However, I love Michael J. Fox! His interactions with Alicia have always been about the strength of their legal arguments, so I am confident MJ will bring a little of his own sauciness to the scenes. We loved you greatly Will – don’t forget us! I will still watch the Good Wife because I love Alicia’s entire family (except for Jackie :oP) and hope their family unit finally heals. We’ll love you forever, Will!

    Jack Myhervold Says:

Josh Charles is a talented actor and will be in interesting projects in the future. The Show has many good characters and will continue to be good viewing. I wonder if Dylan McDermott, who did a very good job on the now canceled “Hostages”, would be a good lawyer character to join the firm?.
