Josh Charles has spoken out about the shocking twist that happened during tonight’s episode of The Good Wife.

“I know people will be shocked and some fans will be upset, and maybe even angry, and I can take the hit on that one. If they’re going to blame anybody, they can blame me. But I think it’s going to send the show in a new direction and it’s going to just keep being fantastic,” the 42-year-old actor said in an interview with TV Line.

Josh Charles Talks ‘Good Wife’ Exit

Josh‘s character Will Gardner was killed in a courtroom shooting by a client of his that went off the rails during his trial.

On when he decided this would be his final season: “I knew last year. Through discussions with the producers and Julianna, we all kind of thought of an idea that [included me coming] back this year to do a set amount of 15 episodes, and really build towards something and give the character a more proper goodbye.”

On why he wanted to leave: “It wasn’t anything bad. Creatively, I was just ready to move on to the next chapter. After having a long conversation with Julianna, and with Robert and Michelle, I liked the idea of coming back and doing a finite amount of episodes. It all sounded like positives for me and for the show, and that turned out to be true. Once the decision was made and we knew what we were doing, it made it very special for me because I knew going into this season that this would be my last year, that I would be doing these 15 episodes. And it gave everything a real heightened quality for me.”

On saying goodbye to the cast: “It’s sad, obviously. The beauty of television is the sense that, unlike any other medium, you develop relationships of such depth and length, more so than films or even theater. You see these crew members that work so hard and give so much and help contribute and collaborate to make the show what it is. You see them more than your own family. So the bonds are really deep. There are a lot of people on that show that I’m going to miss a great deal.”

BIG mistake on his part

Such a shocker!

Going to miss him. He’s the reason why my wife and I love this show. I just can’t see how the show will be the same without him. No one can replace him.

I hope him the best of luck with his new endeaver. He’s a great actor, and can’t wait to see him again

Did he forget that he was in S.W.A.T just a few years ago?

Wow, a bit ironic don’t you think Jared? The picture and title alone scream who died. Thanks. I won’t be coming to your site anymore.

@Sincerely Disappointed.: A bit of an over reaction.

please try harder to stop spoiling shows. The title clearly gives it away, especially as a bunch of other posts are about who died.

For Christ’s sake, it’s a fictional TV show. This isn’t Cote De Pablo and NCIS. Nobody thinks Ziva is permanently never coming back to NCIS. Charles exited The Good Wife on mutually agreed terms with the shows producers and fellow actors and no different than De Pablo, The Good Wife like NCIS will survive.

BAD CHOICE @ 03/24/2014 at 6:58 am

Actors always seem to think they will be more successful when they leave the show they are on. Like a “grass is greener on the other side” mentality. But often times it turns out more difficult then they realized. He had such a good thing going with this show – it put him on the map and he was such a vital part of it. I think this was a poor decision on his part.

It was his choice and i respect that . Good Luck Josh .

The title of the article accompanied by his photo already gave it away.
Thanks JJ!!

Josh Charles, never to be heard from AGAIN. So sad when D-list actors get too big for their britches.

I saw more of Charles’ excellent acting chops this season than any other. While it was the best decision for the show, we will certainly miss his contribution to the overall success of the project. May he find wonderful new roles to showcase his talents. We’re all appreciative of what he brings to the arts.

The title gave it away. Thanks for ruining it for me. He will be missed. The show needs his chemistry with Julianna. That is what made the show for me.

@BAD CHOICE:
Josh Charles has had a consistent long career. He goes all the way back to Dead Poet’s Society. Through it all I don’t think he was ever after fame or fortune. He has managed to maintain steady employment and consistent success. I don’t think he’s too big for his britches nor is he pursuing fame elsewhere. I think he is happy being a working actor who wants to parlay into directing. In fact, he directed one of the final 5 episodes of TGW this season. I can’t believe the number of people slamming him for wanting more. I don’t get that vibe from him at all. He’s newly married and wants to start a family. He wantes to pursue directing as well. He will never be Brad Pitt or Matt Damon, but I think he’s fine with that. He just wants to do good work. He’s also said he wouldn’t rule out episodic television again but he’d prefer it not be 22 episodes. I think he’d like to do shorter series along the lines of Damages (13 episodes per season not 22). I don’t think we’ve seen the last of him at all.

I think he’s starting a landscaping business!

Wow you SUCK at censoring spoilers. seriously thank you for ruining my life. You gave it away and are the sole reason for my torment and agony.

@BAD CHOICE:
I guess the reason behind Josh’s decision to leave TGW is more personal than professional. He was recently married to a very hot wife. Men who get married at this age mostly want to have children and enjoy family life. Doing a serial TV show which is 22 episodes per season is both physically exhausting and time consuming. He’d been working very hard in the past 4.5 years to give us such emotionally complex, believable & relatable character as Will Gardner. Just give him a break. He deserves a wonderful life with a lovely family.
However, I don’t like the way the writers “ended” Will’s life. The circumstances around the event is logically … unworkable. I’d prefer Will died in an unforeseeable tragic accident, like plane crash, than having his client take the conviently unholstered gun from a court marshal and shoot him dead. In hindsight the event looks more like a convenient way to solve Will’s dilemma wether or not to testify for Peter’s case.
