Angelina Jolie Arrives in Sarajevo to Meet Victims of Bosnian War

Angelina Jolie holds an umbrella over her head as she lands on Thursday (March 27) in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The 38-year-old director, actress, and humanitarian landed with British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs William Hague, who she traveled with on their mission.

“We are here to meet victims of the war in Bosnia, female and male survivors of rape who carry a terrible burden,” Angelina said of their visit. “The use of rape as a weapon of war is one of the great injustices of our time. For too long the world has tolerated these crimes, and left survivors to struggle in the shadows. Our goal is to bring forward the voices of the survivors of these crimes and to ask the world to stand with them and against impunity.”

11-year-old Hala was playing in the garden with her brother Kamel when the bombs began to fall. As her home crumbled before her eyes, killing her beloved mother, Hala’s life changed forever.

Hala now lives with her five brothers and sisters in a tent in the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. Not yet a teenager, she bears the responsibility of an adult on her small shoulders.

Our Special Envoy, Angelina Jolie, spent time with Hala and her family during a visit to Lebanon last month. Moved by their strength and courage, she wanted their story to be told.

Angelina is just stunning in the airport video. That’s what you get when you are simply naturally beautiful – with no effort, her hair unstyled, in the rain, holding her own umbrella in the wind.
.
+++++++++++++++++++
.
It really is unfair, isn’t it? She doesn’t even try. She sure as hell isn’t going to half a dozen skin clinics and spas every week. Can you just imagine how stunning she would be if she devoted all her time to nothing but herself the way all these other shallow women do? There’s a special radiance about her – outside and inside – that’s unmatched and very rare.

OMG! What words are there to speak after witnessing what these children have gone thru and are still going thru. After the tears, prayers are offered to see the end of this horrible 4 years long war now. Their young lives have seen so much violence.
.
I wonder if Angelina filmed this. It is a heart wrenching video to watch but also very touching. How hard must it have been for her not to cry or take those children in her arms and just love them as they spoke. I believe, with all my heart, she hugged each one of them as only a mother can before she left their tent and village.
.
Cesar you are right. What kind of people would post such vile things about this great lady as she goes around the world touching the hearts of so many in pain, bringing them whatever comfort she can. These precious little babies, all of them I know, appreciated so much talking with her and sharing their tent with her. You could see the joy in their faces as they remembered their mother. I will never forget their faces. My heart breaks just seeing them in my mind’s eye and the tears do not stop falling.
.
God bless you, beautifuly lady Angelina. And God bless Brad and your family for taking care of things at home so you all, as a family, thru you, Angelina, could reach out and take love to a sad, sad place filled with orphan children. I pray this war comes to an end now. No people should suffer like this. Especially not the children. War is Hell!
.
Thank you ladies for posting this unforgettable video. .

Hair Line @ 03/27/2014 at 5:04 pm

I swear, her hair line keeps going further back.

@fyi: Tears. Thanks to Angelina for bringing these kids story to the rest of the world and thanks to those kids for sharing what terrible things they have and are going through.

Angie is one tireless crusader of human rights!!!! I don’t know how she does it…juggling family, career and UN work…She is a forced to be reckoned with…So admirable miss Jolie!!!!

Please say how they cure Angie of bisexual? This is important question I have.

Aww…look at all the name changing trolls trying so hard with vile little comments.

You are cute.

Too bad all you do is make yourselves look foolish – thanks for the laughs though.

Amazing woman!! Wel done Angie :) take care and God Bless you always….

Angelina Jolie the undercover ambassador: Major security operation to get Hollywood star and William Hague to the airport with police convoy and screens to shield them from prying eyes.

Miss Jolie was taken from her hotel to Downing Street in a Government car
Pair were escorted by police motorcycles as they travelled to airport
They then boarded a private plane for visit to Bosnia and Herzegovinia
Met Police says her involvement with the UN would explain security detail
.

A major security operation was required to get Angelina Jolie and William Hague to the airport for a UN mission today, with a police motorcycle convoy and screens to shield the pair from prying eyes.
.
The unlikely duo had met in Downing Street to discuss tackling rape in war zones, before flying out to Bosnia and Herzegovina to meet victims.
.
But before they even reached Sarajevo the pair were the focus of an intense police effort, worthy of one of Miss Jolie’s films, complete with black screens, security guards and a number of police officers to get her across London safely – and away from the eyes of the public.
.
Hidden: Security officers put up black screens to shield the actress from view as she met with the Foreign Secretary
.
Black out: The actress is picked up from her London hotel and driven to a breakfast meeting with Mr Hague
.

The actress, a Special Envoy of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, was taken from her London hotel in a black Government car to Downing Street for a meeting with Mr Hague.
.
Accompanied by a police convoy, including motorcycles and unmarked police cars, she and the MP were taken to an airport, where they boarded a private plane for Bosnia and Herzegovinia.
.
Miss Jolie, who is known for her humanitarian work, spent around 12 hours in the UK, arriving on Wednesday night when she attended a drinks reception, followed by dinner with Mr Hague at his offices.
.
The Metropolitan police refused to comment on the specific security arrangements of Miss Jolie’s visit but a spokesman told mailOnline: ‘We never discuss specifics of security but if Miss Jolie was with Government officials as part of her UN duties, that would explain a police presence.’
Mission: Ms Jolie, a Special Envoy of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, was picked up by a black Government car and taken to Downing Street
.

Last year Miss Jolie and Mr Hague travelled together to the Democratic Republic of Congo, where they met survivors of rape.
.
Their visit to Sarajevo comes ten weeks ahead of the three-day Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict, which they will chair in London in June.
.
In November Mr Hague pledged funding of more than £250,000 over three years to the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations and the Department of Field Support to develop training as first responders to rape and sexual violence.
.

Speaking of their mission to Bosnia, Mr Hague said: ‘Tens of thousands of women, girls and men were raped during the war in Bosnia.
.
‘We are visiting to draw the world’s attention to their search for justice, and to call for global action to end the use of rape as a weapon of war once and for all.
.
‘In London in ten weeks’ time we will be asking nations around the world to make that decisive commitment, so that from Bosnia to the DRC survivors get the justice they need, and future mass rape can be prevented.
.
‘We can and must change the entire global attitude to these crimes, and shatter the culture of impunity.’
.
Miss Jolie and Mr Hague will meet survivors of sexual violence from the war in Bosnia, which ran between 1992 and 1995, as well as judges and prosecutors in the country who are working to address the huge backlog of sexual violence cases.
.
They will also speak at a regional military conference of ministers and senior officers, as well as meeting with political leaders to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing Bosnia.
.
Miss Jolie added: ‘We are here to meet victims of the war in Bosnia, female and male survivors of rape who carry a terrible burden.
.
‘The use of rape as a weapon of war is one of the great injustices of our time. For too long the world has tolerated these crimes, and left survivors to struggle in the shadows.
.
‘Our goal is to bring forward the voices of the survivors of these crimes and to ask the world to stand with them and against impunity.’
.
Miss Jolie’s long-term involvement with humanitarian projects led to her her being appointed a Special Envoy of UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres in April 2012.

Angie and Brad beautiful love @ 03/27/2014 at 5:22 pm

fvck, this was really hard to watch!!!!!!!!!!

Seeing Angie with that poor family of children without parents and living in a refuge camp make me think in all the hard things Angie have saw in all this 12 years working in UN for refuges.

Angie must be affected by all this images, she must fell the sadness and the impotence, she must be traumatized too by all this disgrace and inhumanity. I don´t know what is need to survived a war situation but Angie must be really a strong and courageous woman, i don´t know what is need to lived with all this images and all this emotions and this experiences when she return to her home.

Like i said, Angie is the most beautiful woman in the world, a great and glamorous actress, a very rich and successful person and a happy mother and wife with a happy family, living in a amazing home in a peaceful place and besides all that she is in that refuge camp, talking with that kids, looking to their faces and eyes and felling all the drama and tragedy of this family.

Angie must be mental prepared to face this situations. It must be very difficult to return and not think about this drama no more.

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10152796763448438&set=vb.13204463437&type=2&theater

Well, hope Angie family can give all the love and support she deserve. It´s not easy to do what she does. Angie deserve everything in this life. She already is doing too much. She is a force of nature but this images are to harder to forget.

I know Brad and her six happy kids will compensate Angie after this kind of trips. She is a Queen but an Angel too….kiss

Video : Angelina Jolie puts spotlight on Syrian refugees as U.N. Refugees chief warns Lebanon could collapse under burden
.
Lebanon could collapse under the weight of the massive influx of Syrian refugees, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres warned in an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour that aired Thursday.
.
Without economic and financial support, and an increased effort to share the burden of Syrian refugees, “Lebanon [does] not [have] the possibility to go on with the present situation,” Guterres said.
.
Angelina Jolie, a special envoy for the UNHCR, is highlighting the plight of Syrian refugees.
.
She recently visited with a family living in a Lebanese refugee camp, speaking with a young child, Hala, and her five siblings.
.
Hala saw her mother killed under their collapsed home, and their father is missing and presumed dead.
.
“Twenty-five percent of the Lebanese population today is Syrian,” Guterres said. “We have more Syrian students in Lebanese public schools than Lebanese students.”
.
“Lebanon has serious problems with electricity and water, and largely because of this huge increase in population; the health system is totally overburdened, and the security implications of the Syrian crisis to Lebanon are absolutely dramatic.”
.
“Nobody can afford the collapse of Lebanon in the present moment.”
.
Lebanon has felt the brunt of the Syrian conflict, with just under a million refugees, according to the U.N.
.
Turkey and Jordan are both caring for about half a million refugees each; Iraq and Egypt are also carrying a significant burden.
.
“I remember in Jordan another child, a 4-year-old child, a boy,” Guterres recalled. “We were there for 20 minutes in his family’s tent. And he was constantly shooting with a toy gun.”
.
“Nobody managed to calm him down because violence is so deeply now in his way of life.”
.
The UNHCR is trying to help those children with “psychosocial support” but that is often ineffective given the extent of some of the trauma, Guterres admitted.
.
“When we see this tragedy, when we see this generation, it really breaks our hearts, because it’s not only these children; it’s the future of Syria that is being completely undermined.”
.
Guterres’ mandate as U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees is humanitarian, but as a former Portuguese prime minister, he says the security implications of the conflict are hard to miss.
.
“I’m sure now the biggest threat, not only to regional stability but to global peace and security that we have faced since many, many decades ago.”
.
“Recently in a meeting with the minister of home affairs of Europe, their main concern was not the number of refugees coming into Europe; it was the number of European citizens going into Syria to fight in Syria now.”
.
“And that one day will come – radicalized, hardened, and potentially a security threat for their own countries.”
.
It is absolutely essential, Guterres said, that the international community overcome its divisions and work to end the conflict.
.
“I have never seen any major crisis in the world being solved without a lot of discreet, behind-the-scenes diplomacy.”
.
“What is for me dramatic in Syria is that I don’t see that activity behind the scenes.”
.
It is vital that all countries with a stake – whether politically or militarily or financially, and whether with the government or opposition – play a role.
.
He cited the U.S., Russia, Iran, Saudia Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey to name just a few.
.
“I believe it’s absolutely essential that these countries all understand that today this is a war nobody is winning,” he said. “It is clear that both the government and the opposition cannot survive without the support of the key stakeholders around the conflict.”
.
“This is becoming a serious threat to everybody.”
.

The video is hearbreaking and I give Angie all the credit in the world for not crying in front of them.

Her voice over for the video was just perfectly done and you could hear how much this means to her.

@Angie and Brad beautiful love:
WHAT A SAD STORY !
I am crying! i am so happy to live in a country that is not in war. We have violence and poverty, but not war.
I wish that these children, Hala and her family could have a better future. It is very very sad, living by themselves, their older brother unable to car for them, still a teen himself.
AJ is a strong woman, to be able to listen to their stories.
Really after listening to stories like that, the petty hate of the trolls is nothing, not worth nothing.

I really should think of donating to UNCHR. I never have, I have donated to UNICEF, but this is really a worthy case, it is all I can do, in fact. Well, that and help more in my own city.
I think that I do enough, but it is never enough, paying taxes is not enough. .
