Dakota Fanning Reveals Her Studies on Women in Film

Dakota Fanning grabs some lunch to go before heading to the set of the Untitled Gerardo Naranjo Project on Friday (April 4) in Las Vegas.

The 20-year-old actress was joined on set that day by her co-star Sarah Steele, 25.

Dakota recently chatted with The Independent about what she has studied at NYU.

“Last semester I did a study about female directors and whether the movies they make breakdown the stereotypes of women, or do they even care about that at all,” Dakota said. “The one thing I’ve looked at about women in film is that it’s very rare to find a female character that is not in some way validated by a relationship with a man and so I’m kind of interested in that.”

She is sooo right, even in reality. If a woman is alone, she must be desperate and lonely, but if a man is alone he is enjoying his freedom and his having the time of his life. 2014 and nothing changed, not in the movie industry and not towards the general perception about women who are single.

I have always had a lot of respect for this fine actor, this fine young person. I have just turned 60 (tho people think I am 45), never married, and I also feel like one of life’s rejects; despite many accomplishments, strengths, etc etc. It’s not easy being a woman, in virtually all respects.

I don’t know if I buy this at all. If the woman is validated by a relationship, and assuming most of those relationships are heterosexual, then there is an equal number of guys being validated by the same relationships.

The fact is that people want to see relationships in movies.

I think what is more important is whether the female leads are able to open a can or jar without help. Do they solve their own problems, or just run to men for help – that sort of thing.

As a Bostonian I also want to add, that we marry a LOT later (often late 30′s/early 40′s) but men here are judged just as much- behind the scenes- if he isn’t married by 46 (as in, there must be something wrong with him).
