Olympic Swimmer Ian Thorpe Hospitalized with Serious Infection, Will Not Be Able to Swim Competitively

Olympic swimmer Ian Thorpe has contracted two infections and is in the hospital in intensive care as of Tuesday (April 8) in Sydney, Austrlia.

The 31-year-old competitive swimmer, who has 11 world championship victories and five Olympic gold medals, contracted the shoulder infection after undergoing surgery in that area.

“It’s serious but it’s not life-threatening,” his agent James Erskine said (via the Sydney Morning Herald).

“He’s contracted two forms of bugs in hospital. He’s undergone two or three operations over the last two months so … I mean bad luck. He’s quite sick but that’s the situation. From a competitive point of view – he will not be swimming competitively again I don’t think,” he added.

Our thoughts are with Ian during this time.

It seems worse than “bad luck.” They should look at the infection rate of that hospital.

It’s probably the way we’ve been using antibiotics – irresponsibly. These superbugs don’t just appear out of nowhere. Same thing with pesticides and herbicides and superweeds. Best of luck to Ian and hope for a smooth recovery.

He had retired from competitive swimming when he didn’t qualify for London 2012!
