UMass Basketball Player Derrick Gordon Comes Out as Gay

University of Massachusetts basketball player Derrick Gordon has come out as gay, ESPN reports.

With the help of the UMass men’s basketball coach Derek Kellogg, who brought the whole team together, the 22-year-old player was able to tell his teammates.

“We’re all here together, and we need to love each other for who we are,” Coach Derek said to the team. “One of your family members, your brother, wants to let you know something about himself.” And then Coach Kellogg said, “I wanted to let you all know I’m gay.”

“No, he’s not. But I am,” Derrick then confessed.

“I just didn’t want to hide anymore, in any way,” Derrick said. “I didn’t want to have to lie or sneak. I’ve been waiting and watching for the last few months, wondering when a Division I player would come out, and finally I just said, ‘Why not me?’”

This makes Derrick the first Division 1 men’s college basketball openly gay player.

I hope we get to a time when we don’t make “coming out” such a big deal.

(PS. I am not gay.)

@qui: yes you should especially since there is still so much ignorance, especially, among athletes. So glad we are evolving, no more room left for the ignorant views on homosexuality in America. Get with the program or leave….

This is getting boring every other month someone comes out
Can they set a date where everyone comes out?
It’s 2014, we all about gays, we all should accept them
Wut is the big news??

@King: Agreed! Ones sexuality should only matter to themselves, not the public. I don’t get why the media has a fascination with people coming out now.
