Ben McKenzie Wants You to Read 'The Cartel' for In Depth Look at the NCAA

Ben McKenzie steps out to do some shopping on Tuesday (April 15) in West Hollywood, Calif.

The 35-year-old actor recently tweeted an upsetting link to a story “UConn guard tells reporters he sometimes goes to bed “starving” because he can’t afford food.”

He then recommended a book to a fan who replied to Ben, and was disturbed by the article.

“If you want to read a fascinating and thorough take on the subject, check on Taylor Branch‘s ‘The Cartel,’” Ben tweeted.

Read the original CNN article about University of Connecticut’s Shabazz Napier, and be sure to check out “The Cartel” for an in depth look.

Might be time to start asking Ben for a regular reading list. I’ll have to give this a go. It’s great to know that there’s something that goes beyond the image to some of the reality. Thanks, through the grapevine, Ben (and Jared)!

I can see where Ben would have tried to learn about this as someone who’s always been an athlete and followed sports and is also very involved as an advocate for social justice, including hunger. Good for him for doing the homework and offering the info to help with awareness.

The Cartel is going on my reading list thanks to Ben. I’ll pass it on too. Thanks!

Intelligent guy. He uses his twitter the right way. A good mix of fun and seriousness.

On a more shallow note, these photos are amazing! Thanks!

Ben keeps a low profile, including on Twitter, but I’m glad he made an exception for this. It’s something I’d like to learn more about. Another case of things not always as they seem. This should be a very insightful read for college and pro sports in general.

I totally agree with Ben being a smart and thoughtful guy. This is one more example and it comes across in his work on screen and what he does to make a difference.

Thanks for passing it on along with the pics!

A friend who’s a sociology prof also recommended this. Great minds…? Ben’s definitely not the Hollywood norm. Love someone with a good head on his shoulders. I’m glad that he’s curious and wants to learn more and encourages others to do the same. Bonus that he’s found a way to strike a balance with media in a crazy era with very little privacy and few boundaries.

This is a great rec by Ben and a good post to pass along too. Thanks JJ!

For another rec, if Ben’s new indie Goodbye World isn’t in theaters nearby, check it out on download rent or purchase. He’s excellent!
