Brad Pitt’s New Movie About the Steubenville Rape Has a Strong Message For Men

The video is as ominous as its creator intended — a figure shrouded in a cheap Guy Fawkes mask, his viage illuminated by the glow of a computer screen. Recorded a few nights before Christmas, that digital missive — created by a scrawny young man from Kansas named Deric Lostutter — would set in motion one of hacktivist group Anonymous’ highest-profile crusades to date targeting those associated with the Steubenville rape case.

This scene, part of a Rolling Stone article detailing Anonymous’s vigilante efforts to expose the Steubenville rapists, may soon be heading to a movie theater near you thanks to Brad Pitt and his production company, Plan B, which bought the rights to the story earlier this month. So far, it seems Lostutter will be the focus of the planned film, though it remains to be seen whether he will be portrayed as a hero or simply the protagonist.

The film has so far met with a good deal of controversy from those who argue the victim — not hackers — should be the protagonist of such a story. While this argument makes sense, a high-profile movie about a high-profile case of sexual assault and could spark a much-needed conversation about the responsibility of men in terms of eradicating rape culture.

And that’s a good thing. Because whatever your stance on Lostutter’s methods, he is an example of a guy who took action on an issue too often met with silence by men.

All too often it seems, sexual assault prevention is still viewed as a “women’s issue,” one men appear reluctant to actively get involved with. Sure, when questioned, most men are going to declare themselves anti-rape, but saying you’re against sexual assault is like saying that you’re “anti-genocide” or “pro-ice cream” — of course you are. Being anti-sexual assault should be a given, not grounds for praise.

The perception that rape is somehow a “women’s issue” also assumes that men are never sexually assaulted, when in fact, according to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN), at least 10% of reported American sexual assault survivors are men.

So what is keeping men on the sidelines? Many, it can be assumed, want to help but are unsure how to get involved. This, however, is no longer good enough. As Jackson Katz says in his excellent TED Talk, “Violence Against Women – It’s a Men’s Issue,” “caring deeply is not enough.”

So what can guys do to help prevent sexual assault?

Incidents like the recently leaked email exchanges originating from the underground Epsilon Iota fraternity at American University remind us that misogynistic, hyper-masculine norms still permeate our culture. A CALL TO MEN co-founder Tony Porter and award-winning speaker and educator Keith Edwards often use a box as a metaphor for the way American society currently defines masculinity. This man box has consequences.

Aggression, stoicism, rationality, sexual competitiveness, superiority to women, heterosexuality, lack of vulnerability — these are all some of the ingrained traits expected of men that culturally and emotionally limit them and can degrade women.

“Interacting with men who are feeling insecure and who get messages that proving their manhood is often about sexual conquest affects relationships with women at best and leads to sexual and other violence at worst,” Edwards notes.

Thus, one important action for preventing sexual assault is challenging the confines of the man box, both for yourself and the other men in your life. Even small things like language can have an impact; for example, be careful not to use degrading terms like “plowing” when talking about a sexual experience, don’t mock your buddy when he gets emotional, and don’t use phrases that equate homosexuality or femininity with inferiority (e.g. “You throw like a girl” or using “this is gay” to denote something disagreeable). These little actions may seem insignificant at the time, but they are all part of an effort to be a good ally and a good “bystander.”

Indeed, “bystander intervention” programs are becoming increasingly popular on college campuses around the country — and what’s more, they appear to be working. The basic premise of these programs is that if you see signs of potential sexual assault, you should intervene. (A recent article in the New York Times prescribes some creative ways of doing so). Such programs aim to make the term “interventionist” as ubiquitous as “designated driver,” mirroring the success of Mothers Against Drunk Driving in the ’80s.

In the purest sense, Lostutter was a bystander who intervened — and now Hollywood has decided his intervention is worthy of a movie. Again, while the deba

In the purest sense, Lostutter was a bystander who intervened — and now Hollywood has decided his intervention is worthy of a movie. Again, while the debatable ethics of his methods are beyond the scope of this article, another week’s headlines full of fresh high-profile sexual assaults should serve as a reminder that there’s still much to be done to amend a culture that facilitates rape and makes the legal and recovery process difficult for survivors.

We as young men have a responsibility to do more than simply say we don’t agree with sexual assault — we can be good bystanders, we can educate ourselves and our friends about challenging the man box and we can be good allies for the survivors in our lives (because there is at least one, whether or not you know about it).

We can act. And hopefully, by the time the Steubenville vs. Anonymous movie comes out, we will be able to look back on the incident as a call to action that helped set off a major cultural shift — not a blip in an increasingly dispiriting status quo.

Not that Brad has to worry about this because he has a stylist and PA who buy his clothes…but…those of us who hate to shop know that if you find something you like and it fits right…buy more than one. Sometimes in multiple colors, sometimes all the same color. I was just telling someone the other day – I’d rather have a root canal 7 days a week than go clothes shopping.

Sooooo…has anybody here read the new Peeps yet? Not so much read it as page through it looking for Angie’s picture in the Most Beautiful section? Well, I did that earlier today – and promptly LMFAO at Ticky’s Aveeno ads being prominently placed not once but TWICE right in the middle of the story on Lupita. I kid you not. There are these fantastic glamour shots of Lupita and she’s talking about how she never thought she was beautiful and had to learn to love what she thought where flaws, ie, being so dark skinned, being African, not having long flowing hair, etc. Then I flip and the page and exactly oppositive this – TWICE – is Ticky staring at the camera Photoshopped to the gills, sporting 6″ inches of weave hair in photos taken AFTER she chopped off her own hair and was seen 3 times leaving skincare clinics with the tag line someline like, “Naturally beautiful.” I was in Walmart LMAO and people are looking at me like I’m crazy. Not once, folks, but TWICE Ticky tried to steal the Most Beautiful title out from under Lupita. Shame on Peeps. You know Aveeno paid premium money to have those ads placed in the middle the feature cover story honoring another woman’s beauty. How pathetic is that? But the thing that gets my goat is that it’s a fvcking fraud. If they want to tout Ticky’s “natural beauty” than they need to use the stills coming in from the Crack set – unPhotoshopped – and let people judge the quality of their products from that. They also need to put an asterisk next to their claims and state clearly that Ticky also frequently skin clinics and is admittedly “obsessed with laser p0rn” – her exact words. That shite is false advertising – plain and simple.
    .
Anyway…did Peeps include Angie in this issue? Yeah, in a section honoring 25 years of most beautiful. They had her on a page with 4 other women – including Ticky. Now here’s some more BS from Peeps. The photo they used of Ticky is at least 7 years old. The photo they used of Angie, IIRC, was either from the BAFTAs this year or the Governors Awards in Nov 2013. Peeps had to search back through 7 years of photos of Ticky to find one they deemed “beautiful”…meanwhile she’s fraudulently pitching Aveeno with her puffy middle-aged face.
    .
Still, I’m gonna give Peeps 1 Brownie point because they have a quote about beauty from each of their “icons” and shaded the fvck outta Ticky. Not only do they have her on the same page as Angie, but Ticky’s quote natters on about hydrating and getting enough sleep. Angie’s quote was from her 60 minutes interview, “As long as Brad thinks I’m beautiful, I just don’t think about it. I wake up and I want to be a smarter person.” In one fell swoop Peeps showed the world why Brad dumped Ticky and 10 years later is still with Angie. Staying hydrated and well-rested vs. being smart and not up your own ass all the time. Hmmm…

February – the burial ground of shittty movies. Porgie dodged a bullet because The Monuments men just barely broke even with $155MIL worldwide…but $77.4MIL domestic on a $70MIL budget? Not good. I don’t think Depp is going to be quite so lucky though. Mordecai co-stars waste-of-space Putrid and for some reason Depp is only making movies that co-star Paul Bettany these days…

Uh…why didn’t someone tell me about Porgie’s drunk ass pissing contest with Steve Wynn? That shite is mega hilarious! Now Porgie has a 72 year-old ready to beat his ass which is even funnier than the time Fabio had to school him. LOL! I love the fact that they each released their side of the story trying to make the other sound as douchey as possible. On that score Steve Wynn wins (ha ha) because he pretty much told the world that Porgie is a hallucinatory loudmouth braggart who mistakenly thinks he’s BFF’s with the POTUS – and basically that he can’t hold his liquor. SNAP! And all Porgie had was, “You’re an assssshole…” It’s Steve Wynn for the PR spinning win. I’m kinda embarrassed for Porgie’s PR flack that he let the old guy schooled him by shading Porgie as a drunkard.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Does Ticky and Aveeno really believe that she’s even remotely as beautiful as Lupita? Lupita became the darling of awards season and won her first AA. Two things Ticky never is, has or will do. Gotta hand it to her. She just doesn’t know what to say stop. Like you keep saying PT, the jokes do just write themselves. You know Ticky, so badly wanted to meet Lupita during awards season and it didn’t happen. Didn’t Lupita quicky move on from the Friends question when Kimmel tried to bring it up. She talked about being obsessed with another series? LOL.

Not only do they have her on the same page as Angie, but Ticky’s quote natters on about hydrating and getting enough sleep. ROTFLMAO! So, not only does Angelina say that Brad thinks she’s beautiful and that’s all that matters to her. But, being a smarter person is more important than being beautiful So, Brad thinks brains are beautiful too. And here you have Ticky talking about her equivalent of oats ‘n’ stuff.

Being shallow vs. being intelligent. And people wonder why Brad called her a dead end bore. Not Angelina. Ticky. And why Tate called Ticky a shallow b!tch and Mayer called her old and boring.

Angelina has Brad and six beautiful children. Ticky has water. LMAO!

Don’t even get me started on bra shopping. I hate that even worse than clothes shopping. For one thing – I’m not flat-chested. They NEVER have my size…but always have the next size up or down. What’s up with that crap? For another – I hate underwire. That shite’s like Chinese water torture to me. Just about every bra these days is underwire – except the old lady bras. True story – went to lingerie shop at a local mall last week. They had 10 what seemed like million bras on display and I was like, “Fvck. This is ridiculous. I’m just going to ask the clerk what they have that’s not underwire.” She starts bragging that they have over 25 different brands\types of bras. Yeah, yeah…just tell me which ones aren’t underwire. TWO. They had 2 models that weren’t underwire – and my size was “out of stock” on both…but she could order them for me. I told her that I could order online myself so forget it. The third problem with bras – they’re too freaking expensive! You can spend less money per week on groceries than a good bra that fits properly costs.

I’d love to know how much Aveeno paid for those 2 full-page ads in the middle of the cover story. Normally a mag like Peeps can change $500K or so for half a page. So Aveeno probably paid $1MIL apiece for 2 full-age ads. I really found it nauseating that they tried to hijack the Most Beautiful issue with the biggest fraud around as their spokeperson. I’ll sure as fvck never buy Aveeno.
    .
The other reason Angie’s quote vs. Ticky’s quote was funny was because it cannot possibly be a coincidence that Peeps put them on the same page. There were 2 other pages of “icons” including one with Hyena Laugh. Why not put Ticky a different page from her alleged “love rival”? Because it’s the same shite 10 years later – Angie vs. Ticky. It was Peeps’ intent to stir all that up again yet at the same time it reminds everyone – Angie won. They could have chosen another quote from Angie about beauty – but they deliberately choose one that references Brad and shows how in love Angie and Brad are over one that merely speaks to her beauty. They pretty much said, “Yeah, we took Aveeno’s money…but let’s get real here…she still ain’t got Brad Pitt and hasn’t for nearly a decade. Angelina Jolie does – and Brad thinks she’s beautiful AND smart.” LOL!
