Gugu Mbatha-Raw Is a Green Goddess at 'Belle' Premiere

Gugu Mbatha-Raw looks gorgeous in green while walking the red carpet at the premiere of her new movie Belle at the Paris Theater on Monday evening (April 28) in New York City.

The 30-year-old English actress was joined by her co-stars Sam Reid and Miranda Richardson, as well as Anika Noni Rose and Yaya DaCosta, who showed up to show their support.

Belle is about the true story of the illegitimate mixed race daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral who is raised by her uncle and his wife. Her status prevents her from the traditions of noble social standing, but when she meets a young vicar’s son bent on changing society, the pair help shape the end of slavery in England.

FYI: Gugu is wearing a Lanvin gown.

I completely agree….a Black woman who isn’t a maid, a victim, a slave, nor a comic. God knows it’s about time we saw a Black woman dressed well and rich.

She has a stupid name, but whatever. I remember her from that canceled TV show–Undercovers.

@Truthie: God forbid there are people of different ethnic backgrounds whose names reflect those. Guess everyone should adapt Western names, huh?

I was so excited to see this movie only to discover that it’s not playing at my local theater nor is it playing within 250 mile from me. WHY IS THAT? I recently relocated from Las Vegas to the South and now that I think of it I was in town visiting when 12 years a slave came out and that movie was nowhere to be found either. Is this something common in the south? Do I have to look forward to taking a weekend trip to another state just to see a film that is important to me… Sorry I didn’t mean to rant, this just kind of bothered me.
