    KCam Says:

Lots of white people. LOTS!!!! I had hoped once Lucas was out of this franchise we might see some diversity.

Space is white …. the future is white. Remarkably male too. YECH!!!!!!!!

Honestly I’m stoked I have no idea who any of these people are so that way when I’m watching it its not like I’m reminded theyre actors.

    Ava Says:

@Kcam Why don’t you take a f-cking hike…what you think it’s ok to be racist against white people… Maybe white people should be like black people, have their own tv channel , magazines , movies, awards shows, charities, action groups, congressional caucus. The only group that has to take a back seat in their own nations are white all of sudden … Go to China and demand and more diversity in their movies or Indian or Africa countries…. Sick and tired all these people dressing up their anti white racist with PC words like diversity .

    Truthie Says:

Almost NO females. Just like Lord of the Rings.

    Monquia Says:

Love that there’s no Luptia , such a fameho’ , it’s been over 3 years since filming ended on “12 years a slave ” all she does is dress up and and go to events and do mag covers , she wants to be famous not a actress.

    Truthie Says:

@Ava: Hollywood is not the European movie industry. It’s a GLOBAL movie industry, the majority of whose audience is not white. Comparing it to India is nonsensical. 99% of Bollywood movies are consumed by South Asians. Hollywood’s audience is for more diverse, with 70% of box office profits coming from overseas, and 44% of North American moviegoers being non-white. It needs diversity to represent its true audience.

So, you think the existence of BET is anything compared to channels like CMT, NBC, ABC and CBS, and countless other networks with 90% or more white people in movies, TV shows, commercials, etc.

  12. 12
    Truthie Says:

Lena Dunham was right. Adam Driver gets opportunities in Hollywood but not the female cast members from Girls. Ouch.

  13. 13
    Alejandra Says:

so what was the point of having an open casting call if there weren’t even gonna use any

  14. 14
    Maria Says:

Not saying you all don’t have valid points, but let’s remember these are the offspring of Leah, Hans, Luke, etc. It would be a bit unbelievable to cast a minority in those roles. Hopefully there are other roles and the final product is more diverse than what that cast picture reveals!

  15. 15
    reality check Says:

@Ava: Why is it anti white to ask why aren’t there more black people in the cast? Is it anti male to ask why aren’t there more women in the cast?
With that said let me explain to you why the questions are asked. Because there are people in power that are like Donald Sterling. People who think because your skin is not white that you are a second class citizen.
BTW as this country becomes less white and more brown do you really want the majority to rarely hire people like aren’t like themselves.

  16. 16
    Ava Says:

@ truthie. Actually Hollywood makes 80% of it’s money from majority white countries, US, Canada, Russia, Eastern Europe, Western Europe , Australia makes most of Hollywood foreign grosses . The second is China , South Korea and Japan.. And they all have very healthy domestic box offices, that represent their races, so if they’re seeing a Hollywood movie, they know it’s foreign and white , they don’t give a sh*t if a black persons in it. The whole African continent is less then 2% of foreign gross to Hollywood, the same for India & surrounding countries, that Bollywood dominates . Vast majority South America , Central America European decent and consider themselves white, I know since I’m from Brazilian and my husband is Argentine, Hispanic is some made up word to divide Americans and legalize Mexicians since they’re 85% ” Hispanic’ in the US are Mexicans.

    LaCroix Says:

please retire this ridiculous series already.. there really is nothing more to say..

  18. 18
    Everything is about money Says:

@Ava: let’s be honest, Hollywood wants to own the asian audience and the majority doesn’t want to see black people, looks at what the Korean women do : they want to be white, so if you want to sell something in this kind of countries you will have more success with a white person

  19. 19
    Soopatroopa Says:

@ Truthie – Adam Driver gets roles in Hollywood films because he’s the only cast member on “Girls” who can act.

  20. 20
    sandy Says:

@Monquia: you are such an idiot. the yale drama school graduate with a masters degree is a fame*****. loooool you’re very delusional if you can’t separate fame****** for established, intelligent women. and yes, she actually cares about style and wants to be respectful at events and happens to look gorgeous all the time, its called having taste. are you jealous that she’s one of the few blacks that gets invited to high fashion shows? sounds like it but lupita deserves every accolade that she’s been given and she’s an inspiration for many so yes, thank god we do have a lupita in hollywood that can prove that diversity is whats needed in hollywood. i think they did a good job with the casting but i think they didn’t want to hire more female actresses just because they may have possibly believed that too much female attention would have diverted from the actual plot (i.e. too much romance/sexual undertones in a sci-fi flick). carrie was one of the few if not the only female actress that i recall being in the movie back in the 70′s franchise and the movies were still fantastic, i think they only cast princess leia’s daughter so it does make sense. and as a hispanic and fellow miamian, im very proud that oscar isaac has been cast in the movies, he’s a great talent but sometimes i believe that he’s progressed so far in hollywood because he uses his artistic/professional name as Oscar Isaac when his real name is Oscar Hernandez (his middle name is Isaac), i wonder if he would’ve progressed just as far in the industry if he actually used his last name professionally, just a thought as far as the racial diversity subject is being brought up here.

    Cindy Says:

@ 15. Why ?? black people make up about 11% of Americans::: 1 black person out of 10 in a cast is representative. African nations in international grosses are nothing to the American film industry. Blacks are overrepresented American culture in sports, movies, tv and music, not under. Besides the fact that for the last 7 years America has had a black President , highest executive and military leader in the land and a black Attorney General the highest law officer of the land in a nation that blacks aren’t even 15% of the population.

  22. 22
    Cate Says:

Very happy for John Boyega. Great to know Max von Sydow is in this. He’s phenomenal.

  23. 23
    Truthie Says:

@Cindy: Black people are NOT overrepresented. White people ARE.
Blacks, depending on who you classify as black (12-15%) of the population and account for 12-14% of the roles–NOT overrepresented.

Whites (depending on who you classify–Hispanics, for example) are 62-72% of the US population and account for 83% of all roles in TV, MOVIES and commercials. Whites are overrepresented by either 20% or 10% in Hollywood movies, commercials, TV shows, etc.

Nice try. As I said. 44% of North American Box Office are non-white.

    @Ava,

Most people in Latin America are genetically mixed race. Many SELF-identify as white, even if they DO NOT look it. The Hispanic Label is often used to designate Spanish-speaking Latin American (who are often ethnically ambiguous looking, due to their mixed heritage). It’s stated on the US Census that Hispanic is a ethnic/cultural classification, but can be used racially, because Hispanics tend to be and look mixed race (visibly not white or black,. Exhibit A: Ava Mendez)

You mention Box Office, but not consumption. Hollywood movies are consumed by people in Africa, India and other parts of the world (regardless of the revenue generation at BO).

  24. 24
    Truthie Says:

    @Cindy:

When I say “depending on who you classify as black (the estimate for SELF-identified blacks in the US is between 12-15 percent of the population. If you identify as SELF-identified black Hispanics (e.g. Zoe Saldana, etc(, the black population jumps to 16-20%

Likewise, if you include Middle Easterners and SELF-identified White Hispanics to the white race, the population jumps from 62% to about 72%.

According to the Hollywood reporter, whites accounted for 83% of all Hollywood roles, tv shows and commercials. In other words, whites are OVERREPRESENTED in the media.

According to the same HR, blacks account for 13 percent of all roles in television and in movies.

Regarding sports. NBA and NFL are very popular and those are ONLY sports where blacks are dominant (70-80 percent), but those are based on skills, or perceived skills NOT quota.

NHL (hockey) is 99 percent white. So is Lacrosse. So is swimming. So is Tennis. So is Golf. Those are whiter than they should be, based on the white population of the US, and based on the white population of the world. Are you concerned about these, or just black faces?

  25. 25
    Hahahaha no Lupi Says:

LOL. Lupi can barely act. She got to the US through her rich father, cried in a 12YAS, had 12 minutes in entire movie and got an Oscar as the PC token. The other black actresses in the movie were much better. Her team is getting her fashion deals, wasting time. Her next role will be a pity role with a Ngerian author or small part in Deniro movie.
