Zac Efron Opens Up About Skid-Row Fight & 'Never-Ending' Addiction Struggles to 'THR'

Zac Efron shows off his gorgeous baby blue eyes on the cover of THR‘s latest issue.

Here’s what the 26-year-old Neighbors star had to share with the mag:

On his skid-row fight with a homeless man: “We were having trouble finding somewhere – a lot of places were closed – and the car ran out of gas off the 110. It was ridiculous. We had to pull over, and I called Uber.” While waiting, “A homeless guy, or vagrant, tapped on the driver’s-side window. Before I knew it, he [the friend] was out of the car, and they started fighting. I saw that [the homeless man] was carrying some sort of a knife, or shank, and I got out of the car to disarm him. At some point, he dropped the knife, and I got hit pretty hard in the face – and almost instantly the police were there to break up the fight.”

On life pre-rehab: “I was drinking a lot, way too much. It’s never one specific thing. I mean, you’re in your 20s, single, going through life in Hollywood, you know? Everything is thrown at you. I wouldn’t take anything back; I needed to learn everything I did. But it was an interesting journey, to say the least.”

On joining alcoholics anonymous: “I just started going. And I think it’s changed my life. I’m much more comfortable in my own skin. Things are so much easier now. It’s a never-ending struggle.”

  • cokehead

Never trust a kid who has a tattoo on his hand that says “YOLO”.

  • Milly

@xvlmxx: I know, this interview just made me root for him more.

  • what…

    Living in a box

i still he is still with “my car ran out of gas ” story yeah of course ……….

  • Truthie

Yeah, sure Zackie boy, sure. Your rehearsed mantra isn’t convincing anyone.

  • OK

@cokehead He had the YOLO Tattoo removed. He started in Dec. 2012 and finished last year.

  • Rachel

    Interesting interview.
    Rooting for you, Zac.

  • Truthie

I love how they’ve photoshopped the bloat out of his face. Normally, his face is bloated and puffy looking.

  • Nina

@cokehead: you do know he removed that tattoo right? It’s gone.

  • anonymous

Well I guess he looks more like Matthew Perry than I thought!

  • Rachel

    Read the whole interview, guys.

  • Everest

Young stars that believe they have “struggled” and “overcome” something are now showcased in some light that makes them appear better, wiser, and more serous actors- when they’re still the fools that chose to use substances in the first place. This narrative is tawdry, overdone, and in Zac’s case- it doesn’t wear well or seem authentic in the least.

  • Lea

@Truthie: if you watch the behind the scenes video, face looks the same.

  • OK

The Wrap today says there is still more than one part yet to be cast.
That being said and as much as I would love to see Zac in “Star Wars” , I don’t think it will happen.

  • OK

Zac I am so proud to be a fan of yours. Wish you love and happiness.

  • lol

Oh sh-t, Zac Ephron thinks he’s Tyler Durden.

  • Ash

@Rachel: I know, I did not know he was producing so much and that he took a pay cut for the neighbors movie to make the film. I also did not know Neighbors only cost 18 mill.

  • Kendall

I will never get over those eyes.

  • Meg

Yes, I agree with Zac. Media tends to blow everything out of proportion.

  • xvlmxx

@Milly: I read the whole interview and you could see how lonely and sad he was , probably even depressed which is the main reason he turned to drugs and alcohol. I root for him. He has a bright future ahead of him if he stays on the right path

  • Rachel

    From the whole article:

Adds Zadan: “He is the most delightful person to work with. Always in great spirits, always excited about the work. Hollywood is very forgiving of actors when they go through the stress of being stars and being followed around by paparazzi — to a point. If you become one of those people where every single day is another misuse of alcohol or drugs or car crashes, that’s different. But Zac has never been that. He’s very well grounded.”

  • jon m’shulla

Zac….He’s a liar. Homophobic bigot, racist and cokehead. He is so over.

  • Cindy

@Everest: wow, you sound like you never made any mistakes in your life. Are you that perfect? Life is about making mistakes and learning from them.

  • Erin

@jon m’shulla: you are so bitter. Sad.

  • Rachel

    Haha! Same here!
His eyes and that smile. Will never get over them.

  • zacay

Please fan gurls, HSM is over. He should have already got over it.

  • Leddie

I understand you Zac. I deal with anxiety and overthinking too. It sucks.

  • Milly

    @xvlmxx: yup, same here.

  • Susan

@Rachel: yup, I can’t believe I read through this because I usually hate reading. It was a good interview.

  • May

The red couch background is definitely working:-)

  • OK

@jon m’shulla You have no idea what you are talking about Zac has several close black friends and some of his closest buddies are gay.
So why don’t you take your uniformed self to another site?
I promise we won’t miss you.

  • Janae

I cannot work out Zac. In the mornings I can’t even get out the bed, how am I suppose to work out? Lol

  • sunshine2121

  • jaded

If you read the whole interview, it seems pretty honest. He especially opens up how lonely and isolated things (fame, working movies back to back) became for him. It’s easy to see why he turned to substances to cope. I hope he continues therapy because I think he can benefit and has probably benefited…this interview was one of the better ones I’ve read recently.

  • Becca

@jaded: yup, I agree. This interview gave a lot of insight. I continue to support him.

  • Nancy

@Cindy: agree, no one is perfect in this world. Everyone has struggles. You gotta learn how to overcome those struggles.

  • Rainy

He’s doing a lot of behind the scenes work. I like that.

  • what…

and those close black friends didn’t tell him doing a black face is not a good idea ?

  • Karen

Love Zac. Awesome interview. I felt like I got a perspective of him. Haters are just gonna hate cause they got nothing better to do.

  • Taylor

@Meg: yup and I’m also rooting for him. He can go so far.

  • Meme

    He slayed that photo-shoot!

  • James

  • Cate

Great interview. Good that he is seeking therapy as that can help him with his issues and anxiety.

  • OK

@what Guess they didn’t or they are not bothered by it like you seem to be.

  • Paulie

He was doing more than just drinking, according to multiple stories.

  • OK

So happy he realized he needed help and did something about it.

  • Tara

Dont buy the skid row story just like I dont buy the jaw and puddle story.

  • Michelle

“Without those moments where you feel like your lowest, it’s impossible to appreciate the high ones” -Zac Efron… Ain’t that the truth.
