Neil Patrick Harris Turned Down David Letterman's Job, Says He Would 'Get Bored'

Neil Patrick Harris has revealed that he was offered David Letterman‘s job as the host of The Late Show, but he ultimately turned it down.

“I don’t have any interest in doing ‘monologue, commercial, sketch, guest, guest musical act, goodnight,’” the 40-year-old actor said on The Howard Stern Show.

Neil also turned down the hosting position on Craig Ferguson‘s The Late Late Show. He said, “It’s still nightly. You’re still coming up with the same content and now you’re just getting bitter that no one’s watching it.”

“I was flattered that I was kind of being considered,” he said. “How exciting to be considered for something like that.”

Neil said that he would be interested in doing a variety show that airs once a week. “I think if it’s weekly and people really want to see it – and you trust that there’s a lot of really great sh-t on there – then you’re going to get the guests to want to come on your thing,” he said. “A weekly thing, you’d have more time to prep for stuff. You could do pre-taped stuff that would be really exciting, you could flesh it out a little bit more and have more acts.”

DO YOU THINK Neil Patrick Harris would have been a good Late Show host?

    what? Says:

I think it’s bad form to publicize jobs you have turned down and others have accepted. Now everyone will think that Steven Colbert was second choice. I’m personally glad he turned it down.

    ASK Says:

What a rude, disgusting set of comments to make. Neil’s ego is getting way too big, someone needs a reality check.

    Joelle Says:

We would get bored with him. Who knows if he actually got offered the job. He might have only had talks with them like some others who didn’t get it. He’s always come off as pretty pompous to me. Chelsea claimed she turned down the job too, yeah. Colbert is 10x better than either of them would have been.

    Gray Says:

About 20 years ago I used to eat at the Fox Studio commissary and Neil would be in there acting like a little brat. And I see 20 years later he hasn’t changed.

He looks old for his age. His skin looks like is that of someone in their 50′s

    Can't Stand Him. Says:

Uh, more like most of *US* would get bored of HIM. This guy is getting more and more obnoxious by the day. RME.

So no he wasn’t offered the job-

Harris stressed to Stern that he was “not in conversation like about-to-make-a-deal — but they called me in and sat me down and asked if it was something I’d be interested in, because I have a good relationship with them from How I Met Your Mother.”

    How tacky! and annoying.

“I was flattered that I was kind of being considered”. Kind of stretch for JJ to say he was offered the job and turned it down.

I turned down that job too. How boring to have regular employment and all that money!! I’m way too good for a job that Letterman and Carson did, obviously….

@what?: Agree. Not very professional of Neil Patrick Harris. Most celebs will either not speak of it and say the right person got the job or they won’t talk about it until years later and say the right person got the job.

This disgraceful immoral Man would never be accepted as a show host. The Network airing it would be blacklisted and would go broke.

I can take NPH in small doses. But when given enough time, he always falls back on snark. Letterman was snarky as well, but it an dry humor sort of way. NPH is just a jerk.
