I cannot believe how good Godzilla was. I honestly thought it was all just talk and publicity like always, where you go in and expect to turn off your brain and just be led through a mess and noise pollution – but it wasn’t! I actually felt engrossed and literally felt like I was discovering Godzilla with the cast – it was surreal. For the first time since watching Jurassic Park, for the first time I suddenly felt what I felt when I watched Jurassic Park! I felt like I was having cinematic experience! I was sooooo pleasantly surprised and the build up was just amazing. It wasn’t bloated, and it wasn’t empty it had almost the perfect pitch of all elements. It was all sooo subtle it was liek going back in time and living in the 90′s and seeing Jurassic Park for the first time again. It was all just so awesome and I am watching it again.

THIS is how you make a Godzilla movie!

@darius: SPOILERS AHEAD. Honestly, it was a bit flat and lagged.
The trailers made you think Cranston was the main guy; but it was his son, ATJ. ken Watanabe’s role was written so badly; they totally wasted a great actor. Sally Hawkins, another wond’ful actor, was also underwritten; it’s telling when the screenwriters needed to have a ‘sidekick translator’ role to make an ‘ethnic’ role work. Lazy! However Godzille and the MUTOs were very well imagined and the action sequences between the big monsters worked well. Elizabeth Olsen was shrill and also poorly written.

The human aspect of the movie is not bad. It’s not the best but it’s not their movie it’s Godzilla’s. Read on the trivia on IMDB there are scenes that were cut out but that will appear in the DVD – some with the classic a japanese cast making an appearance. There needs to be a directors cut plain and simple. Watch the original and you’ll see that even in that the human aspects are flat – again it’s not about the humans. This movie is a testing of the water movie – would subtle work or not. It clearly has so the sequel will be far more developed. Remember this movie was done with the assumption that it would do OK they never expected this to be this great.

And it is. Yes it has it’s flaws and it does leave you hungry – and that’s the point. You leave wanting more and that is a Godzilla movie. This movie was perfect, it’s elements were all just right and Godzilla himself? Leaves you in awe. The fights are amazing and the build up to them is very very realistic.

    No cheese
    No bloating
    No mishmash
    No lens flare
    No overpowering music
    No blurs
No action for the sake of action
    No inappropriately timed romance scenes
    No ignoring the human cost
    No cliche villains or heroes

It’s a Godzilla movie and you never forget it.

Glad some of you enjoyed it, not my type of movie.
Living on a small fixed income, I have to pick my movies carefully and only go to the senior matinee. This is a real pain from someone who used to go to the movies every weekend. I love the movies.
