Maleficent feeds make-up craze on YouTube

    Published — Sunday 1 June 2014
If you want red lips like Angelina Jolie in “Maleficent,” Internet make-up artists Nicole Guerriero and Kandee Johnson will be happy to help.
The two are among dozens of video bloggers posting make-up tutorials that have helped sell out products tied to the Walt Disney Co. film, which opens Friday. Estee Lauder’ MAC Cosmetics, the studio’s marketing partner, developed a line for “Maleficent” and works with Web personalities like Guerriero.
“I love that creepy, sexy vibe that Angelina is giving off in the movie,” Guerriero said in an interview. “People want to re-create that.”
Disney and MAC Cosmetics are tapping a booming audience at Google’s YouTube, where views of beauty-related videos have more than doubled to 700 million a month in three years. With social media, the partners can reach audiences with a precision print and TV lack, finding fans who might buy lipstick, as well as tickets to the live-action film based on the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.”

BOX OFFICE: “DAYS OF FUTURE PAST” EXPECTING $31 MILLION THIS WEEKEND
    Posted: 3 hours ago
    TV/Film

It isn’t Magneto or Mystique, but Disney’s Maleficent, that’s looking to bring down the X-Men this weekend.
After opening strong over the Memorial Day weekend with $111 million in North America and more than $300 million globally, “X-Men: Days of Future Past” is estimated to bring in more than $31 million this weekend, according to Deadline. The film brought in an estimated $9.5 million on Friday.
That’s well below the $24.2 million that “Maleficent” brought in on Friday. Disney’s live-action family film, which stars Angelina Jolie as the horned enchantress who plagues Princess Aurora, is expected to top the box office this weekend with more than $65 million. The film is said to be playing well to the girls, moms and families that made “Frozen” a global success — a film that incidentally passed “Iron Man 3″ this week to become the fifth-highest grossing film of all time globally.
“Maleficent” currently rates a 56 — “mixed or average reviews” –with critics on Metacritic, while audiences have rated it a 7.1 — “generally favorable reviews.” Writing for SPINOFF ONLINE, Phil Pirrello said the film is neither terrible nor good. “Rather, it just takes up space, which is much worse.”
This weekend’s other opener, Seth McFarlane’s “A Million Ways to Die in the West,” brought in $6.1 million on Friday. The R-rated Western comedy will likely finish third at the North American box office with an estimated $16 million to $17 million. It is also getting mixed reviews from both critics and audiences on Metacritic.

Maleficent” Sits Tres Jolie Atop Box Office Mountain, Seth MacFarlane Dies In The West

I’m still waiting for several estimates to come in but it’s all Disney and Angelina Jolie at the box office this weekend. Driven by its family friendly PG rating and a large take from its Imax screens, “Maleficent” easily cruised into first place this weekend, grossing an estimated $68-71 million. The movie received an A Cinemascore and should enjoy a huge Saturday and Sunday, which might propel the picture close to, if not over, the $70 million mark.

Seth MacFarlane found out that dying is easy, comedy is hard, as “A Million Ways To Die” greatly under performed and will come in at only $16 million or so. It seems that moviegoers looking for a laugh preferred known quantities like “Neighbors” and “The Other Woman” than a comedy western starring the guy who directed “Ted”.

Elsewhere, “X-Men” dropped around 65-67%, leaving it in second place at $30 million or so, which is what I projected yesterday. “Godzilla” plunged again, which left it around $10 million. And “Blended” held in a bit better than I projected, rounding out the Top 5 at $8 million.

Here are the full Top 10 projections

    1. MALEFICENT—DISNEY—$68-71 MILLION

    2. X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST—FOX—$30 MILLION

    3. A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST—UNIVERSAL—$16 MILLION

    4. GODZILLA—WARNER BROTHERS—$10 MILLION

    5. BLENDED—WARNER BROTHERS—$8 MILLION

    6. NEIGHBORS—UNIVERSAL—$7.5 MILLION

    7. MILLION DOLLAR ARM—DISNEY—$3.8 MILLION

    8. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN—SONY—$3.4 MILLION

    9. CHEF—OPEN ROAD—$1.8 MILLION

    10. THE OTHER WOMAN—FOX—$1.6 MILLION

‘Maleficent’ Reviews: Critics Hail Angelina Jolie
    • By Keerthi Mohan

“Maleficent”, the Robert Stromberg-directed fantasy adventure movie that has Angeline Jolie playing a horned evil witch, is the rethinking of Disney’s “Sleeping Beauty”, and critics are unanimous that the flick truly belongs to its lead actress.
The 90-minute movie throws light on the factors that lead to Maleficent turning evil, and Jolie has managed to provide an emotional depth to the character, critics feels.
“This is Jolie’s film because of the Maleficent she makes. Everyone else, even Aurora, fades in her presence,” wrote Betsy Sharkey of Los Angeles Times, and James Berardinelli of Reel Views appears to agree.
“Angelina Jolie’s interpretation of the title character, which transforms the animated icon into a complex, fully realized woman, provides emotional depth and breadth,” Berardinelli wrote.
“…Because of Angelina Jolie’s forceful and nuanced performance, the title character escapes the one-dimensionality that trapped her in the 1959 Disney classic. Here, she’s a deeply tragic and conflicted figure who seeks solace and finds redemption in the most unlikely of ways,” he added, praising Jolie.
“Maleficent” is Jolie’s first film in four years. She was last seen in “The Tourist”, released in December 2010.
While Jolie is being heaped with praises, the film as a whole has been critiqued for lacking a proper storytelling technique, while some say it lacks enchantment.
Forbes wrote that the movie is a “mishmash of seemingly random scenes and incidents”, and it does not have a story to tell. The review also noted that the movie barely resembles a finished feature.
Variety’s Andrew Barker noted that the film was rushed and also pointed out that some of the bonding scenes between Maleficent and Princess Aurora appeared forced. Several other critics felt that the other characters in the movie could have been better developed.
However, “Maleficent” is expected to topple “X-Men: Days of Future Past” which had a good Memorial Day weekend. The Jolie starrer is expected to have a $60 million opening and is expected to lure a lot of female audience away.
The movie, produced by Joe Roth, is not expected to match the $116 million debut of “Alice in Wonderland” in March 2010 or the $79.1 million opening of “Oz the Great and Powerful” in March 2013, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Those two Disney movies were also produced by Roth.

Disney’s Maleficent tops Tom Cruise actioner Edge of Tomorrow but the latest X-Men feature soars ahead of the rest.

Online film chatter in the UK has been dominated over the past week by X-Men: Days of Future Past.

The superhero sequel generated 53,512 comments across social networks on its first week of release, with 17,521 of those expressing an intent-to-view.

Opening this week, Maleficent proved most popular will more than 8,000 mentions – more than double the 3,320 that commented about sci-fi action film Edge of Tomorrow, starring Tom Cruise.

Of those films coming soon, comedy sequel 22 Jump Street edged towards 7,000 mentions, with 68% expressing intent-to-view.

However, Grace of Monaco, starring Nicole Kidman, barely moved the dial with just 225 comment.

This is how celebrity works. One duck-egg-blue day in Los Angeles, you find yourself speed-walking down a terracotta path at the Hotel Bel-Air. Hustling beside you is the global PR of Walt Disney Studios, a natty Brit. You thought your interview was in an hour, but no, says the natty Brit, it’s now, and no, you don’t have 30 minutes, you have 25, and no, there’s no time to go to the toilet. This is what happens when you’ve been flown halfway around the world to meet perhaps the most famous movie star alive, and perhaps the most beautiful woman on the planet. The rules of normal life no longer apply.

The natty Brit swings left into a corridor, and takes a flight of stairs two at a time. At the top, another PR stands in the gloom, guarding a door. It opens and ejects a journalist. Propelled from behind, you plunge forward and into the light.

I think very much children are exactly who they are when they’re born.

If this story were a movie, such light would signify a revelation. But in fact, Angelina Jolie is side-on, pouring a glass of water at a cabinet to your left, so your first, anticlimactic vision of her is of a slim figure in profile, head bent, one knee cocked. She is wearing all black: skinny black jeans and a loose black top. She turns, smiles, steps around a coffee table to a sofa on your right. You shake hands. You think she seems strong: a strong grip. Tattoos on her inner arms. Broad shoulders. Slim – but not skeletally slim. All this hits you in a second. So it is not until your second second that you register Angelina Jolie’s face.

Dynamic duo: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie at Kensington Palace in May this year. Photo: Getty Images
Great beauty is hard to describe. Even Homer only managed “white-armed Helen”; so much is subject to collective opinion and individual mood. But Jolie, in the flesh, is a kind of fact. Every now and then – once in a generation? Once in a century? Once in an age of heroes? – a face appears that makes the launching of a thousand ships seem reasonable. Jolie has that face.

Clint Eastwood – not easily impressed – once called Jolie “the most beautiful woman on earth”, and this may, quite literally, be true. You might say, “No, a more beautiful woman may be living in darkest obscurity somewhere,” but in fact you realise, as soon as you meet the 38-year-old Jolie, that beauty like this is absolutely incompatible with anonymity. As soon as a single other Homo sapiens caught sight of it, the gig would be up.

Jolie’s colouring is all in shades of brown: honey- brown hair, pale-gold skin, amber-green eyes. Even her lips – as extraordinary in life as on film – are caramel pink. She has not a single line, mark or blemish on her face, but manages to look as if she hasn’t had Botox or work done of any kind. (She may have, of course, which means she’s found the best cosmetic surgeon in world history, which in turn raises the question of why more stars haven’t done the same, which in turn suggests she hasn’t.) She does seem to be wearing false eyelashes, but they’re like no false eyelashes you’ve ever seen: they seem to have been applied one by one, possibly under a microscope by a highly skilled eyelash genie.

Maleficent: Angelina Jolie with her daughter Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, who was the only young Aurora not to cry at the sight of Jolie.
She also has an unexpectedly lovely voice, low-pitched and clear. Obedient to the PRs listening at the door, and the loudly ticking 25-minute stopwatch in your head, you ask about her latest movie.

It is her 38th, in a career spanning everything from mental patient in Girl, Interrupted (for which she won an Oscar in 2000) to pneumatic cartoon heroine Lara Croft. It is a Disney production, entitled Maleficent, and revolves around the wicked fairy/queen/witch (Disney doesn’t get bogged down in details) who curses Sleeping Beauty. Jolie plays Maleficent, notable for her unearthly green beauty, a faint sibilance in her voice, and her prosthetic cheekbones, even higher and more angular than Jolie’s own.

What is most notable about this film, however, at least in celebrity terms, is that Angelina is not the only Jolie in it. Her 10-year-old son, Pax Jolie-Pitt, and her nine-year-old daughter, Zahara, have brief walk-on parts, and the blonde, dazzlingly cherubic child who plays the young Sleeping Beauty (aka Aurora), is Jolie’s youngest daughter, five-year-old Vivienne. How did this happen?

“Complicated history”: With her brother, James Haven, and father, Jon Voight, in 1994. Photo: Getty Images
“Well, Aurora needs to be a kid who can really, genuinely see me with love, and not be afraid,” explains Jolie pleasantly. “And I’m there with my horns and my accent and my pointy teeth, saying things like, ‘I hate you! Go away!’ ”

Children did, apparently, run screaming from the set at the sight of Jolie in costume. “Two little children broke down in tears, and one said, ‘Mummy, please make the scary lady stop talking to me.’ ” Vivienne, however, took

Director Robert Stromberg Talks MALEFICENT, Joining the Film, Finding the Look for the Title Character, Casting Angelina Jolie, and Editing the First Act

Every villain is the hero of their own story, which can certainly be said for the title character in Maleficent. This untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the classic Sleeping Beauty shows the level of betrayal that ultimately turned Maleficent’s (played to wickedly delightful perfection by Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie) pure heart to stone and led her to place an irrevocable curse upon the infant Aurora. Directed by Robert Stromberg and written by Linda Woolverton, the film also stars Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copley, Sam Riley, Lesley Manville, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Brenton Thwaites.

While at the film’s press day, Collider spoke to director Robert Stromberg at both a roundtable and 1-on-1 interview where he talked about how he ended up directing this film, that he’s always been a Disney fan, the process for finding the look of the character, why Angelina Jolie was the perfect choice for the role, that his initial cut was about 15 minutes too long, and how he had to rework and condense the first act. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Question: How did this come about for you? Did Joe Roth just approach you about doing this because he knew that you had experience in creating worlds?

ROBERT STROMBERG: I’ve done three films with Joe Roth, starting with Alice in Wonderland, and also Oz. Obviously, he was taken by the world creation part of our relationship, but over that time, we also started to get into talking about emotions and characters and story. After some period of time, he realized that there was more to it than just creating pretty pictures. It’s really interesting to be a part of a segment in Disney history where I’ve been a part of the look of that period of time. That’s fantastic and unbelievable for me because I grew up admiring the Disney world and the artistry. To be somehow connected to that is pretty cool.

Have you always been a Disney fan?

STROMBERG: Yeah. Something happened when I was in elementary school. A Disney artist named Bruce McIntyre retired, and he had done drawings for Pinocchio and Snow White that was just classic stuff. He moved to the town I grew up in, Carlsbad, and he became a part-time art teacher at our elementary school. He took a liking to me because he could see how passionate I was about art and drawing. So, at seven years old, I had a Disney artist showing me how to make Disney art. The fantastic irony is now coming full circle and being a part of that history, myself.

Had you been putting it out there for awhile that you wanted to get into directing?

STROMBERG: I’ve been talking about it for years, to be honest with you. I moved out to Los Angeles with the idea of becoming a director, which thousands, if not tens and hundreds of thousands, of people do, every year. It’s a very competitive field, of course. I immediately got swept away into the visual side of things, starting with visual effects, and then designing. Literally, the last 10 years have been back-to-back designing worlds. There was never time to go off and prove to people, by doing an independent film or something else, that I could direct. I’ve always felt ready to do that. Part of that is just being on set for 28 years, and the other is hanging around directors who I respect and have learned from. And then, the key thing is that I feel that I’ve paid attention to human behavior and emotional situations enough to understand and apply that to storytelling.

Any film is an undertaking, but this one is a particularly huge undertaking. Do you feel like you could have survived taking on something like this, if you hadn’t had the background that you have?

STROMBERG: There was probably no way, if not for the experience of these big films. There was a whole part of it that wasn’t a learning process, which is the fast track to getting to where you want to be. It’s actually really perfect to direct a film that is this big because I understand the building blocks of it. That’s something I didn’t have to worry about. I could keep an eye on that and know, instinctually, that it’s going in the right direction, and then really focus on the story and character.

What surprised you most about directing?

STROMBERG: To be honest with you, as boring as it sounds, nothing. I feel like I’ve been ready to do this for a long time, and it was really a matter of getting the opportunity. I don’t mean it to sound the way it does, but I looked at this film and went into it with excitement, not fear. It was really about finally getting to play with all of the toys and work with actors. That was the one thing that I was really looking forward to. And then, I got to tie that together with the thing I already know, which is creating the world. Completing a piece of art and using all of the elements of making a film, was satisfying, for sure.

What do you think it is about the character of Maleficent that’s made her such a lasting character for people?

STROMBERG: It’s hard to say what iconically will hit, resonate and stay with people. There’s a dark quality to the character, but there’s also a playfulness to it, in a weird way. As Angelina says, there’s a delicious evil quality to her. I can’t explain why people gravitate towards this character, but it’s been fun for me and Angelina to explore other dimensions of this character. The actual character that we all know and love is very one-sided. The fun is breaking it apart and finding the other angles that are interesting.

Did it feel like a big responsibility to take such a hugely iconic Disney character and bring her to life, in this way?

STROMBERG: There was a lot of comfort in knowing that Angelina was Maleficent, going into this. In many ways, I’ve always felt she was perfect for the role. And then, I found that she just brought so much to the character, emotionally. So, I wasn’t worried, at all, about the character. I feel that she brought to it something that was already classic. Not once did I question her as Maleficent. Not once did I question the character that we were doing. It just always seemed right.

Was there a process for finding the look for the character?

STROMBERG: We started with the real character, of course, and re-engineered it from the cartoon version. One of the very first things we did was meet at Rick Baker’s studio. Like a department store, we were trying on different shapes of horns and cheekbones, and trying different combinations of things. At some point, the right combination hit and we just all agreed that that was it, and it was perfect.

Did anything about working with Angelina Jolie surprise you?

STROMBERG: No, it was no surprise. She was attached when I became the director. Immediately, you look at her visually and say, “Yes, perfect. She’s great. This is ideal.” But, it didn’t surprise me. The pleasant thing that I discovered was that she brought this emotional depth to it, and such a deep understanding of what the character should be. And then, she brought that to the visual thing. All of a sudden, it became this really powerful explosion. It just felt like something special.

    Why was she perfect?

STROMBERG: I didn’t know her at the time. I met her soon after I became attached. But, I know that she’s a strong person, and strength is something that Maleficent would need. I know that she works around the world and has children of her own, so I know there’s a heart there, as well. The first time that I met her, I went to her house and we spent about an hour just talking about life while we watched her kids play in the backyard. At that moment, I saw the strength and the beauty of what this character was gonna be and need, but I also saw the heart there. That’s when I knew it was the perfect combination.

And what was it about Elle Fanning that made you choose her?

STROMBERG: I had seen Super 8 and, like all of us, I was just infatuated with what I saw. She came in, and I loved her immediately because she defined this bright light. She was what life is. She exuded life itself. There was this light, and the contrast of that with this dark character. The cross pollination in this film was the fun and interesting part. It was about discovering dark and light, and how that intermingles. I had to find the theme in that.

Is there an expanded mythology for all of the creatures that are under Maleficent’s control?

maleficent-movie-imageSTROMBERG: It’s very hard to invent creatures, these days. I wanted to do a mixture of everything that felt organically based, and not too much animal. I wanted it to be a whole range of things, from things that you want to hug to things that you were afraid of.

What did you read, when you were a child?

STROMBERG: My father was a low-budget monster movie maker, so he made classics like the Crater Lake monster. There were always creatures around. And my dad was a huge fan of Ray Harryhausen. One of our neighbors, who went on to win several Academy Awards, was close friends with my dad. His name is Phil Tippett. So, I grew up as a little 4- and 5-year-old kid, watching Phil Tippett and my dad make monsters in our garage. That’s what I did, as a child.

How long was the first cut of this film? Did you have to cut quite a bit?

STROMBERG: We did, yeah. We were running about 15 minutes too long. We wanted to have a film that was under two hours, so we ended up reworking the first act and condensing it, to get to the meat of the story quicker and to get to Angelina’s character quicker, as well.

Did you have to go back and do any reshoots?

STROMBERG: We did what I guess you would call additional photography, but none of the principals were involved. It was just about reconfiguring the front end of the movie, where Maleficent is younger.

Will we see a lot of deleted scenes on the DVD?

STROMBERG: I think so, yeah. I’m trying to find that out, but we did compile the deleted scenes for the DVD.

Do you have any idea what you’re going to tackle next, as a director? Are you going to stay on this path and do another giant movie?

STROMBERG: I don’t know. As long as they let me, I suppose. It remains to be seen how the world accepts this. If they do, then I hope to do bigger and better things, always.

Would you like to also do smaller projects?

STROMBERG: Sure. To be honest with you, it’s absolutely not about the budget. It’s about the content. I would be perfectly happy doing an indie film that had some really cool creative ideas. That would be just as fulfilling as the scale I’m working with now.

Maleficent is now playing in theaters.

Who’s still talking about Gravity? I haven’t even thought about it since the Academy Awards. That film is like Avatar, it’s ALL about the special effects, not acting. If Angelina wanted to be Gravity, she would have done it.
    .
    ++++++++++++++++++++
    .
Exactamundo, Jaye! Hell, nobody’s even talking about a Gravity sequel are they? It doesn’t need to be the same characters but you’re talking about a austronaut-in-peril space movie that could easily be continued with other characters, right? But ya don’t hear anybody asking if there might be another Gravity. It’s popcorn. You eat it and 2 hours later you’re looking for something more substantial for dinner.

  • MALEFICENT FRENCH BOX OFFICE

    @angholina:
Oh thank you love, comparing Maleficent to the highest grossing film of all time on its release week ! That’s a nice compliment you’re paying Angelina ! No one would ever do that with some other actresses starring in 7M$ movies would they ?

  • LOL

    @9 years a lurker
Thanks for posting it again, its been posted yesterday on previous threads, but its a good read nontheless, better than some lameass D-lister whose movies are going straight to VOD talking about hair and eggs and bagels for sundayLMAO

  • http://Www.gsr-twn.blogspot.com RON

Just imagine how nice and peaceful it will be to get Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston in bed with me at the same time. And Brad Pitt et al will be nowhere to be found.

  • LOL

    @RON
Is that you TAMWRONG, still having a HARD ON for ANGELINA & BRAD.
why are using your MALE aliases AGAIN? we know its you, let me guess whould we have James posting next followed by Haven?

  • deadend old manny

ROTFLMAO! We knew the hens would be the first people in line at their local theaters, didn’t we? They ALWAYS are. You know the FFers have probably spent the last 2 days shitttin’ all over the movie and finding ways to make a $70MIL opening weekend look bad when in reality it’s much higher than was projected. Angie keeps winning and they keep losing…and losing their shite. Ya gotta lvoe it.
    .
BTW – Has this crazy hen slapped Ticky’s face on the Malelficent premiere photos yet? Especially the family photo? YOu know she’s working on it if she hasn’t done it already.

  • AWHODAT!

    @MALEFICENT FRENCH BOX OFFICE:
    .
LOL. OMFG! Can you imagine the desperation…….the gnashing of the gums…………..the tearing out of the hair……………the screaming at the ocean that is going on this weekend by the hens in the face of the Angelina Jolie Juggernaut aka Maleficent!
    .
    Oooooooh la la. Schweeeeeeeeeeeet!
    .
So now they are comparing Mal with the biggest grossing movie since titanic…….Avatar. Avatar not only was the most expensive movie to make in recent history (estimates are anywhere from 250M to 500M PLUS MARKETING!) but also the biggest grossing movie of all time (estimates for OW a little over 200M)
    .
So Maleficent, which cost less than half of Avatar’s lowest estimate, and is on track to gross just under half of Avatar’s epic OW numbers, is the bar that the pathetic little p!sssant hens have set for Angie’s fantabulousness.
    .
    How.
    .
    Schweeeeet.
    .
    It.

I’m reading a Maleficent thread on a forum and there’s always a complete idiot hen who needs to say something stupid. This was pretty funny though….freakin’ move on!

God Angelina Jolie doughtier is totally Brad Pitt. That scene was so cute.

    That should be Jenny’s daughter.

    Damn Brad Pitt.

ROTFLMAO!!! Fvck. Those hens sure know how to hold a grudge that isn’t theirs. If Ticky wanted kids there’s no reason why she wouldn’t have them by now – Brad or no Brad. As we all know she’s childless except for a couple of pooches.

  • MALEFICENT FRENCH BOX OFFICE

    @AWHODAT!:
Well, that’s what it takes for Angelina ! Comparing her to the highest grossing movie ever…
On the other hand you can compare some greek chiny cheesy whiny actress’ 7M$ movie to a conceptual subtitled film who was a hit in a sh*thole and the latter would still make more money !

  • Passing Through

Here’s a hen-like project to combate the overall RT score. They have a fan section so go over to RT and rate the movie in the fan section. You can login with a your Facebook account so you don’t have to have an RT account -
    .
    http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/maleficent_2014/
    .
Just below the RT score you’ll see a series of videos and photos. Right below that is the section to rate the movie and leave a comment. The current user score 4/5 and 76% “Liked It”. Get your friends and family to do the same. Then you can drive up the “Liked it” score…and best off all…it’ll annoy the trolls that the audience score keeps going up. LOL!
    .
BTW – The current RT score is 50% on 142 reviews with top critics split 18/18. The Metacritic score, as predicted on Thursday, remains 56.

  • MALEFICENT FRENCH BOX OFFICE

Ok now, this is crazy ! I wrote a comment talking about two foreign countries and its awaiting moderation… Geography is actually taken as an insult now ! While comments insulting children are ok !
