Angelina Jolie Hints at Possible Retirement From Acting After Anticipated 'Cleopatra' Role?

Angelina Jolie Hints at Possible Retirement From Acting After Anticipated 'Cleopatra' Role?

Angelina Jolie steps out looking absolutely stunning at the Maleficent photo call held at The Bund on Tuesday (June 3) in Shanghai, China.

“There’s been lots of different ideas of directors and lots of different discussions,” the 38-year-old actress recently told BBC Radio 5 Live about the long rumored Cleopatra movie.

“She’s complicated, it’s complicated to get this one right. I think we’re getting there. It’s getting close. I imagine the preparation for it is going to be big. It’s one of those that you think maybe that’s the one you put everything into and that’s where you end it, that’s where you finish—in a great way. What could you do beyond that one?” Angelina added. Do you think she’s really hinting she could be retiring?

FYI: Angelina is wearing Michael Kors.

Angelina Jolie: ‘I am not retiring’
    By: WENN.com
    Jun 02, 2014 | 9:08am EDT
Angelina Jolie has denied she has plans to retire from Hollywood, insisting she still wants to make movies. The Tomb Raider star has stepped behind the camera in recent years to direct films, and her third movie, Unbroken, is due for release later this year (14).
Jolie has now sparked fevered rumours she is planning to retire from acting, after telling the BBC her upcoming role as Cleopatra is “one of those that you think maybe that’s the one you put everything into and that’s where you end it, that’s where you finish”. However, the actress is adamant she is not turning her back on Hollywood and will continue making movies.
She tells British newspaper The Independent, “Brad (Pitt) has known for a while that I love my humanitarian work and I love directing and writing so he has seen this coming I think. But I am not retiring. I will do one or two movies if they come, the right ones, but I think that I have been in front of the camera for so long in my life and it’s nice to step back.”

    .
Hi Rose……..I know, right? For the life of me i cannot understand the mentality of these despicable pieces of human excrement that come here to this Brad and Angie fansite trying to insert themselves into our conversations!
    .
No sane person would do that anyway so we already know we’re dealing with some of life’s mentally deranged rejects. The only problem, as far as i can see, is that some fans insist on giving the troll the oxygen it needs by responding to it directly……………..like O2 does. Sorry O2 but i am so p!ssed at you sometimes for responding directly to the nasty psychotic name-changing troll who is a parasite here.
    .
A human reject like that is not used to receiving attention from any living thing so when it finds itself being addressed by a JP fan, it enters into an o.rgasmic paroxysm. You therefore cant blame the little stinker for sticking around for more.

Angelina Jolie ‘thrills’ at box office success of ‘Maleficent’
    By AFP
    Updated about 3 hours ago
    .
SHANGHAI: Actress Angelina Jolie said Tuesday she was thrilled her latest film Maleficent, a modern retelling of the life of Sleeping Beauty’s arch-nemesis, had debuted at the top of the box office.
    .
Maleficent raked in nearly $70 million in North America over the past weekend. The movie not only casts Jolie in the title role as the malevolent fairy but was also produced by the star.
    .
“This type of film is really one you do for the audience. It thrills me that people are enjoying it and it’s a success,” she told a news conference in Shanghai, where she is promoting the movie before its mainland China opening on June 20.
    .
China had the world’s second largest box office at $3.6 billion last year, behind only North America, according to the Motion Picture Association of America. It has attracted a steady stream of Hollywood stars promoting their works.
    .
Jolie said she would welcome the chance to work with a Chinese director, but she hoped her own career would shift away from just acting to working behind the camera.
    .
“In the future, I will be doing less acting and more directing if I’m fortunate enough to have that career,” she said. Her directing credits include “In the Land of Blood and Honey” about the Bosnian war.
    .
But the actress said she hoped to play the character Maleficent again and admitted taking home a souvenir of the film — the curly, black horns from her costume.
    .
Jolie was accompanied by her partner, the actor Brad Pitt, and three children on her first visit to China, where they visited a contemporary art museum and her children learnt to make Chinese “dim sum” pastry and dumplings.
    .
Pitt was punched in the face by an intruder last week while signing autographs at the Hollywood premiere of “Maleficent”. He did not appear at the Shanghai news conference.

Angelina Jolie says she, Pitt won’t change their security at events after red carpet incident

    .
SHANGHAI – Angelina Jolie says she and Brad Pitt won’t tighten their security policies during publicity events after he was accosted on the red carpet in Los Angeles.
    .
She explained, “People like that are an exception to the rule. Most fans are just wonderful. We’ve had a wonderful experience over the years, and we’re very grateful for their support, and it will not change the way we behave.” “
    .
Jolie spoke to The Associated Press while in Shanghai to promote “Maleficent.” Pitt and three of their six children joined her on the trip to China, and Jolie said the children were having a wonderful time.
    .
She also said Pitt handled the situation “perfectly” after he was accosted by a former Ukrainian television journalist at the film’s premiere last week.

Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie visit China
    .

SHANGHAI: Movie star Brad Pitt is visiting China with his partner, actress Angelina Jolie, effectively ending an unspoken ban after he angered communist authorities by appearing in the 1997 film “Seven Years in Tibet”.
    .
Jolie was in Shanghai on Tuesday to promote her latest film “Maleficent”, a modern retelling of the life of Sleeping Beauty’s arch-nemesis, along with three of their children, but Pitt seemed intent on keeping a low profile.
    .
“Right at this moment, they (the children) are in dim sum classes with their dad,” Jolie said, referring to the popular southern Chinese cuisine.
    .
The family visited a contemporary art museum and took walks in the commercial Chinese city, she said, but made no mention of the earlier controversy.
    .
“It’s been a wonderful experience for our family,” she told journalists at Shanghai’s luxury Peninsula Hotel, where the family is staying. Pitt did not appear at the news conference.
    .
Pitt previously played Heinrich Harrer, an Austrian mountain climber who became friends with the Dalai Lama at the time of China’s takeover of Tibet in 1950.
    .
China considers Tibet part of its sovereign territory and has accused Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, who now lives in exile, of seeking independence for the region.
    .
The Hollywood Reporter said the controversy already appeared to be easing as Frenchman Jean-Jacques Annaud, who directed the Tibet film, was making the movie “Wolf Totem” backed by the state-run China Film Group.
    .
Pitt has also appeared in advertisements in China for the Cadillac brand of US auto giant General Motors since last year.
    .
On China’s Twitter-like microblogs, few appeared to be aware of the ban — which was never announced by Chinese officials — but some criticised him for the role.
    .
Jolie said she was thrilled her latest film “Maleficent” had made its debut at the top of the box office, raking in nearly $70 million in North America over the past weekend. The movie not only casts Jolie in the title role as the malevolent fairy but was also produced by the star.

Could you crazy people explain me why do you worship a woman you absolutely don’t know? Why do you act like she’s a saint person? Why do you talk about her like she’s untouchable? Do you even realize that this kind of behaviour is not normal and healthy? She’s just a beautiful woman who makes movies, has several kids and works for UN. But is that really necessary to write about her like you are obsessed with her? Once again, you don’t know her. You worship her as an religionistic icon. But you worship a picture that is created for public. I need to say that m not a hater. I don’t care about her because as a stranger she’s not a part of my life. I just want to understand why do you love strange person more then members of your families and partners. Because what you write seems like that. There could be a really nice social study made on you.

Angelina Jolie says she, Pitt won’t change their security at events after red carpet incident
    =======================================================================

    .
SHANGHAI – Angelina Jolie says she and Brad Pitt won’t tighten their security policies during publicity events after he was accosted on the red carpet in Los Angeles.
    .

“People like that are an exception to the rule,” she explained. “Most fans are just wonderful. We’ve had a wonderful experience over the years, and we’re very grateful for their support, and it will not change the way we behave.” ”
    .

Jolie spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday while in Shanghai to promote “Maleficent,” the live-action retelling of “Sleeping Beauty.” Pitt and three of their six children travelled with her to China, and Jolie said the children were enjoying the trip.
    .

“We went to the Long Museum for Contemporary Art,” she said. “They (the children) are having a dim sum class today and a lot of the local food. We love Chinese food anyway, so now we get to have the authentic Chinese food, and … they are having a wonderful time. Vivienne asked me not to go home today.”
    .

She also said Pitt is a “strong man” who handled the situation “perfectly” after he was accosted by a former Ukrainian television journalist at the film’s premiere last week. Vitalii Sediuk pleaded no contest to battery on Friday and was ordered to stay away from Pitt, Jolie and Hollywood red carpet events.
    .

“Maleficent” is the biggest box-office debut of Jolie’s career after earning nearly $70 million in North America last weekend. It opens in China on June 20.
    .

With more films being co-produced between Hollywood and China, Jolie said “of course” she would like to work with the talents in China.
    .

She said she’s admired the work of Taiwanese director Ang Lee. “I’m not sure if you consider Ang Lee Chinese, he’s Taiwanese but he does many Chinese-language films with many Chinese artists and actors, and I think his work and the actors in his films are the ones I’m most familiar with and are very fond of.”
    .

Jolie turns 39 on Wednesday, but says she doesn’t know how she will spend her birthday because Pitt and the children usually plan a surprise. As for her birthday wish, she said, “like every mother my wish every birthday is for my children to stay healthy (and) for my family to remain healthy, so I will continue that.”

The Hollywood FX Master Who Painted Angelina Jolie’s Eyeballs
    =================================================
    .
Visual effects in movies and TV usually involve more than meets the eye. But Cristina Patterson’s work is exactly what meets the eye. She hand-paints designs onto what she calls “a very, very tiny canvas”—a contact lens—to create crazy ocular looks for dozens of genre films. Without Patterson’s lenses, Angelina Jolie’s glare in Maleficent wouldn’t be nearly as menacing (nor would have Jamie Foxx’s as Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2). Here, Patterson shares insight on some of her favorite “paintings.” Don’t blink.
    .
Maleficent (2014) To offset the titular character’s dark attire and hint at the brittleness within her, Patterson tried to evoke the colors in a geode: at least four blues, three greens, two oranges, and one pink.

We have an opportunity to build a positive legacy for women and girls in Afghanistan
    ===============================================================
    .
By Maria Holmblad | Published: June 3, 2014
    .
Labour must be a tireless champion of efforts to stamp out sexual violence in Afghanistan In two weeks time, global leaders, policymakers, civil society representatives and NGOs will convene in London for the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict. It will be the biggest ever meeting on this issue, headed by William Hague and Angelina Jolie in her capacity as UNHCR Special Envoy.
    .
It is also a particular opportunity to focus our minds on the struggle of women and girls in Afghanistan. For them, the summit couldn’t come sooner enough. As the withdrawal of UK and NATO forces continues apace, the prospects for women’s security in post-conflict Afghanistan are bleak.
    .
For the Labour Party in particular, the challenges faced by women and girls in Afghanistan are a unique responsibility. It was us that took Britain into the war, and we have therefore made a commitment to the people of Afghanistan to protect their security. This includes women and girls, and our commitment to them doesn’t end just because the UK is pulling its troops out.
    .
We also have a duty after the losses British forces have sustained in the conflict to make sure it was not in vain. And so the Labour Campaign for Human Rights has chosen to make this a priority issue for our work this year. The upcoming summit is an opportunity to start building a positive legacy for women and girls in Afghanistan. We must make sure it addresses the specific kinds of violence that Afghan women and girls face – the kinds that don’t necessarily take place in the public realm or on the battlefield, but which are hidden from plain sight.
    .
The mainstream view of sexual violence, and indeed the view that is likely to dominate at the upcoming summit, is that it’s uniquely public. Sexual violence that occurs privately has been seen as irrelevant to the peace and security agenda. Such thinking assumes a narrow view of women’s security and perpetuates the flawed assumption that private and public conflict-related violence are unrelated.
    .
According to the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, in 2013, 6 per cent of all cases of violence against women were related to various forms of sexual violence, and 94 per cent of all cases of violence against women took place in the family.
    .
If indeed we believe there can be no security without women’s security, we must be willing to make the link between the extent of violence against Afghan women that occurs in the privacy of the home, and the widespread war rape of women during the conflict.
    .
We have to understand that violence against women and girls in Afghanistan, and indeed elsewhere, is not only the product of conflict but also of deeper inequalities that need to be tackled. In recent months, Afghanistan has nearly re-introduced public stoning for adultery and changed the law to make it legal to rape women in marriage.
    .
There is clearly a deeper trend of gender inequality and violence in the country beyond that created by the conflict. If we ignore this, we risk leaving the structural causes of sexual and gender-based violence unaddressed. When women are not valued in times of peace they will be seen as disposable in times of war.
    .
We cannot think that it is up to us alone to determine Afghanistan’s future. The country is more able now than at any time over the last decade to decide its own path. But with all the many challenges facing the country, women and girls risk being forgotten and ignored. Through our on going engagement, diplomatically and economically, we have the opportunity to be a voice for them and to make an impact in their lives.
    .
Both in opposition and – come 2015 – in government, Labour must be a tireless champion of efforts to stamp out sexual violence in Afghanistan, particularly by focusing attention on its root causes and its private manifestations. This summit should be seen as the start of a long road ahead.

    When architects become philanthropists
    ================================
    .
    May 28, 2014 13:11
    .
With innovative designs constructed from low-cost, sustainable materials, architects like Shigeru Ban create beauty from adversity
Making buildings out of oversized loo-roll tubes might seem jeopardous, but this unusual methodology has left Japanese architect Shigeru Ban flush with success. In March, he was given the world’s most coveted architecture award, the Pritzker Prize.
Toilet humour aside, there are significant aesthetic and environmental benefits to Ban’s modus operandi, and even more importantly, humanitarian benefits too. For 20 years, he has travelled to sites of natural and man-made disasters to work with local people, volunteers and students, to design and construct dignified, low-cost, recyclable shelters and community buildings for the victims.
    .

Ban’s seemingly rudimentary work disguises highly intelligent design. His recently completed Paper Log Houses in the Philippines, for example, look like simple vernacular buildings. But Ban’s method is holistic and realistic, taking into account the price and availability of material following the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan. Whereas the construction methods of previous Paper Log House projects (in Kobe, Turkey and India) were complicated and time-consuming to build in volume, in this design Ban incorporated the paper partition connection system to simplify the construction. The houses are laid on foundations of beer crates filled with sand bags, and the floor panels are made from coconut wood and plywood. A readily used woven bamboo sheet is applied to the paper-tube structural frame, and the roof is a thatching of Nypa palms laid over plastic sheets.
    .

At the grandest end of the scale, Ban has applied these methods to much more imposing buildings, such as the beautiful 230-seat Paper Concert Hall in L’Aquila, Italy. Primarily funded by the Japanese government after the 2009 earthquake, it is composed of steel, cardboard, concrete and clay sacks, with an oval hall surrounded by 44 pillars. But Ban’s most extraordinary effort to date is the temporary Cardboard Cathedral for Christchurch, New Zealand, which was completed last summer. The building is expected to have a lifespan of 50 years, serving the community until a permanent replacement is constructed. Homage to the humble triangle, it is a steeply pitched structure composed of 98 equally sized cardboard tubes. Its flamboyant frontispiece is a stained-glass window of tessellating triangles.
    .

While Shigeru Ban is the most famous draughtsman donating his efforts in this way, there are many smaller practices and architect-led charities doing the same. It was recently announced that a modern silk-weaving workshop big enough for 120 weavers is currently under construction by David Adjaye Architects in Varanasi, India. The world’s oldest living city has been synonymous with silk production for many hundreds of years, but has suffered due to competing markets. Adjaye is helping Nest – a non-profit foundation that supports craft as a method out of poverty – to enable this deprived community to enter the luxury-goods trade, by bringing them together to work in a building where quality can be better controlled and the possibility of accidental ruin by a leaking roof can be minimised. The project was commissioned by the luxury-clothing brand Maiyet. Adjaye’s design is inspired by the Buddhist-Moghul-Hindu architecture of the region, and has a striking red livery that references the clay of local buildings.
    .

In the UK, two charities are at the forefront of such work: Architecture Sans Frontières and Article 25. The latter is named after the 25th article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which asserts that adequate shelter and housing are fundamental rights. It was set up by the architect Maxwell Hutchinson in 2006. Buildings such as the Gourcy School Project in Burkina Faso are used as a means to pass on essential knowledge and skills to local communities and NGOs, increasing their capacity to deliver their own construction projects. The school was built using locally sourced materials, including laterite stone, to minimise the costly importation of concrete.
    .

The pioneers of these sorts of organisations, which encourage architects to donate their time and skills pro-bono, are Cameron Sinclair and Kate Stohr, who founded Architecture for Humanity in 1999. Their work includes the Manica Football for Hope Centre in Mozambique, an elegant low-lying sports and educational centre made of local earth blocks, bamboo poles, eucalyptus beams, thatched reed ceiling boards and an extensively overhanging roof. Another notable project is a community house for Maeami-hama, a remote fishing village in Japan where 35 out of 40 homes were destroyed by the 2011 tsunami. For the construction, design firm KMDW developed a system of numbered, interlocking plywood pieces accompanied by assembly instructions. The building’s translucent fluted corrugated plastic sheeting gives it a comforting glow when occupied night.
    .

Another US-based organisation that is helping those in need is Make it Right, which was founded by Brad Pitt in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. It has convened the services of 21 architects from across the globe – including Frank Gehry, GRAFT Architects, Eskew+Dumez+Ripple, Hitoshi Abe Atelier and David Adjaye Associates – to design “cradle to cradle” homes of various bold colours and characters, which produce more energy than they consume and have a positive impact on the environment. The architectural community is uniquely placed to answer one of man’s fundamental requirements: the need for shelter. Using materials such as mud, bamboo and cardboard, these buildings prove that the greatest beauty is often to be found in the greatest adversity.

Here’s 4 Movies Brad Pitt Is Producing. And They All Look Awesome
    ===================================================
    .
    by Stephanie Chase | 03 June 2014
    .

Fresh off ’12 Years A Slave’s’ Oscar victory, Brad Pitt has become one of Hollywood’s hottest producers, but could another Academy Award be on the horizon?

We’ll always know Brad Pitt best as an actor but he’s certainly been making waves behind he camera as of late. As a producer, Pitt and his company, Pan B Entertainment have been behind two Best Picture Oscar winners in recent years, The Departed and 12 Years A Slave. After the latter’s tremendous success, Pitt certainly looks to have the midas touch when it comes to his producing picks. But what’s next for Pitt and Plan B? Are the star and his company potentially sitting on a few more Oscar contenders?
    .
    True Story
    —————-
Scheduled for release later this year, True Story is, well, based on a true story. Starring Jonah Hill and James Franco, the film is adapted from the memoir of New York Times journalist Michael Finkel, who learned in 2002 that his identity was being used by serial killer Christian Longo. The killer and the journalist eventually come to a deal where Finkel is the only one whom Longo will talk to, allowing the writer to undercover the ‘true story’ behind the crimes.
    .
The plot of True Story certainly sounds interesting as well as the casting. Pitting Franco as the serial killer with journalist Hill could be an unexpectedly perfect combination. If done right, True Story could give Pitt his 2015 Oscar nomination, though probably not another statue.
    .
    Selma
    ———-
Pitt’s Plan B are producing this historical drama in conjunction with Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions. It follows the 1965 ‘Selma to Montgomery’ voting marches led by John Lewis, Hosea Williams, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Filming has just begun in Atlanta with British actor David Oyelowo cast as King and Michael Clayton actor Tom Wilkinson, rapper Common and Cuba Gooding Jnr also starring.
    .
This one has Oscar written all over it and will most likely be released at the end of next year in time for the 2016 awards. The Pitt and Winfrey behind the scenes teaming means that the movie will have all the backing necessary to make it a firm awards contender.
    .
    Blonde
    ————–
Based on Joyce Carol Oates fictional biography of Marilyn Monroe, Blonde is set to star Zero Dark Thirty actress Jessica Chastain as the famous starlet. Andrew Dominik, who directed Pitt films The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford and Killing Them Softly will be behind the camera and will be working off his own script. The Wrap reported last month that hat Chastain’s portrayal is expected to be ‘much different’ with Blonde taking ‘an unconventional approach to examining the Hollywood starlet’s life and career.’ Filming is set to begin in August this year, with a 2015 release date being looked at.
    .
We probably don’t need another Monroe biopic, but at least this one promises a new take on the actress and will undoubtedly benefit from Oates’ original material. Still, somehow we don’t see this one being Pitt’s next big critical success.
    .
    World War Z-II
    ———————-
The follow up to last year’s apocalyptic horror, which grossed over an amazing $540million at the box office. The sequel will be directed by The Impossible’s Juan Antonio Bayona with British writer Steven Knight penning the script. Plot details for the next World War Z are scarce at the moment but the storyline is expected to continue from where Marc Forster’s movie left off. Right now a 2016 release is expected.
    .
No there’s definitely no Oscar expected for this one, but it is certain to make big money at the box office. But with Knight writing and Bayona directing, it could end up getting a better critical reception that its predecessor, but either way, we expect audiences will flock back for the second World War Z instalment.

Vatican Radio to live stream panel discussion on ending rape as a tool of war
    ====================================================================================
by Thaddeus Baklinski Fri May 30, 2014 16:14 EST
    .

ROME, May 30, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) – What can the world do to end the use of rape and sexual violence in war-torn countries? That’s the question the Vatican Radio’s English Program and the British Embassy to the Holy See will discuss in a lead-up to the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict, which will be taking place in London on June 10-13 .
    .

This Tuesday, June 3, at 12 noon Rome time their panel discussion will be live streamed on Vatican Radio’s You Tube channel. The talk will focus on three main aspects of the global theme of ending sexual violence in conflict: the problem, progress in providing assistance to survivors, and prevention.
    .

The panel discussion will explore the role of the Catholic networks, their knowledge and expertise in conflict zones, as well as hear the voices of religious women who are witnesses and who assist victims of violence, and will examine root causes as well as promote practical actions that impact those on the ground.Vatican Radio’s Philippa Hitchen will moderate the discussion, with Seàn-Patrick Lovett producing the webcast.
The participants in the studio will be:
    • Nigel Baker, Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the Holy See;
    • Michel Roy, Secretary General of Caritas Internationalis;
    • Sr. Elena Balani, Comboni Missionary Sister working in Makala, South Sudan; and
    • Sr. Victoria Chiharhula, MSOLA working in Congo.
The panel will be joined by Pádraic MacOireachtaigh, regional advocacy officer for Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS), who will be web-connected from Burundi.

    .
Ambassador Baker said, “We are steadily building the global momentum needed to end the use of rape and sexual violence in conflict once and for all. These crimes have ruined the lives of millions of women, men and children in our lifetimes. As witnesses on the ground, supporting and assisting victims, the Catholic networks have a big role to play in this international effort.”
    .

Michel Roy, Secretary General Caritas Internationalis, stated that the Catholic Church “provides medical assistance to the survivors of sexual violence in conflict, gives them shelter and counseling and confronts stigma. To the perpetrators, we must tell them to change their lives and to stop carrying out these heinous acts.”
    .

“JRS community-based activities offer survivors of sexual violence space to rebuild their lives. Across the globe – from the remote hills of eastern Congo to urban areas of Colombia – we strive to build communities of hope. However, a more just future depends on the actions of governments needed to fund the provision of lifesaving medical and psychosocial services and enforce laws ensuring the perpetrators are held accountable for their crimes,” said Jesuit Refugee Service International Director, Peter Balleis, S.J.
    .

Vatican Radio Director General Fr. Federico Lombardi, S.J., stated that, “We have to use every means of communication at our disposal in order to defend the most vulnerable, to give voice to those with no voice, and to increase awareness of our own responsibility in the face of suffering and violence.”
    .

The London Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict will be co-chaired by the British Foreign Secretary William Hague and UN High Commissioner for Refugees Special Envoy Angelina Jolie.
    .

Organizers say it will be the largest international gathering ever held on this issue. Over 1,200 delegates, including government officials, international organization representatives, civil society organizations and a broad range of domestic and international experts, are expected to attend the event in London.
    .

The “End Sexual Violence in Conflict: #TimeToAct” webcast will be streamed live on Tuesday, June 3, at 12 noon Rome time, on Vatican Radio’s Youtube & Facebook page.

Have ‘Maleficent,’ ‘Godzilla’ turned the tide for novice directors?
    =================================================
    .
    By TheWrap.com on Jun 2, 2014 at 9:00 p.m.
    .

Hollywood is making billions thanks to inexperienced directors, disproving the stereotype that neophytes cannot handle massive productions. ”Maleficent” is the third movie in two months to triumph at the box office thanks to its unproven director — not in spite of it.
    .

The Russo Brothers, whose only previous movie was “You, Me and Dupree,” turned “Captain America 2” into an international juggernaut. Gareth Edwards, who’d never had a budget north of $1 million, has already earned a job making a “Star Wars’ spin-off thanks to his work on $160-million “Godzilla.” Robert Stromberg rode Angelina Jolie and the Disney machine to a $170 million opening for “Maleficent.”
    .

As Hollywood makes more and more movies on a massive scale, studios are hiring a raft of inexperienced filmmakers to shepherd some of their biggest projects. They come with a lower fee, a fresh point of view and, hopefully, a smaller ego. This has ended in disaster, such as “47 Ronin,” “I, Frankenstein” and, most recently, “Transcendence.” Universal entrusted Carl Rinsch, a commercials director, with a $200 million samurai epic starring Keanu Reeves. Lionsgate awarded Stuart Beattie, an Australian screenwriter, a chance to direct his own script. Warner Bros. handed Wally Pfister $100 million to follow in the footsteps of his long-time collaborator Christopher Nolan.
    .

All of their movies failed, and a director’s lack of experience is an easy source of blame. As these films are being put together, doubts and conflict invariably spill into the press, and the cause of said strife is always the same: a director out of his depth. That leads to stories with headlines like “Mega Movies + New Directors = Big Drama.”
    .

Yet a funny thing happens when you look at the actual track record. Shane Black, whose only previous directing credit was the 2005 indie “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” directed last year’s highest-grossing film, “Iron Man 3.” Marc Webb earned the “Spider-Man” job on the strength of a $7.5 million indie, and both of his movies are global hits.
    .

Meanwhile Kenneth Branagh’s success with “Thor” did not save “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” nor did Gavin Hood’s experience making an “X-Men” movie avert the “Ender’s Game” Hindenburg.
    .

Hiring a first-time director comes with risk. In most cases, these filmmakers have never had so many toys at their disposal, or been charged with overseeing such a large shoot. Yet new directors succeed, regularly. Risk-averse studios only pick these directors after a rigorous selection process many compare to courtship and dating. Three times in the past two months, a $100-million movie directed by a relative neophyte scored at the box office. The best example may be Edwards’ “Godzilla.”
    .
He caught Legendary CEO Thomas Tull’s eye with a promo for his movie “Monsters” in which a plane sinks into a lake. Tull called his chief creative officer Jon Jashni, who agreed the trailer was unusual and arresting. An awkward transatlantic call did not dim their enthusiasm because they could tell they were all conversant in the same language. Edwards had just watched a cut of the original “Godzilla” movie from 1954, which gave Legendary its opportunity.
    .

They brought him out to Los Angeles. Though eager to make a project of his own, Edwards expressed enthusiasm about “Godzilla.” That was four years ago. Legendary has entrusted directors unknown and world-famous with its largest projects, but it almost begins with a general meeting like that call with Edwards. “Thomas and I don’t want to simply offer people an opportunity to do something they’ve done before,” Jashni told TheWrap. “There’s nothing that will make artists’ eye glaze over faster than bringing them something they’ve already proven an ability to do.”
    .

While Edwards had never made a massive movie, Stromberg was well-versed in studio tent poles. He was the production designer of “Oz: The Great and Powerful,” visual effects supervisor for “Life of Pi” and production designer on “Alice in Wonderland,” where he worked with “Maleficent” writer Linda Woolverton.
    .

“The story demanded a director that could create incredible visuals; he was the perfect person for that,” Woolverton told The Wrap. Disney and Marvel took a similar chance with Joe and Anthony Russo. The siblings had never directed their own superhero movie, but they had spent years running television shows.
    .

“Functioning at the executive producer levels, you get the calls if something goes wrong,” Joe Russo told The Wrap. “We have incredible responsibility as executive producers for our directing and world building. A lot of what these movies are about is management.” Hiring a first-time director is only a problem when the movie fails.

8 Reasons Why Maleficent And Daenerys Targaryen Are Basically The Same Person
    ==============================================================
    .
by Andrew Hunter 3 June 2014
    .
This past weekend was a big one for us nerds. Friday marked the release date for Disney’s Maleficent, the dark origin story of the Disney universe’s most terrifying villain. Secondly, it was Sunday’s episode of Game of Thrones (‘The Mountain and the Viper’) that featured the highly anticipated showdown between Prince Oberyn Martell and the Mountain. To the relief of devoted source material-preaching geeks far and wide, both Walt Disney Pictures and HBO proved their worth immensely. Too bad things ended on a different note for one of the most likeable characters in all of Westeros… tragically, that’s just George R. R. Martin’s style.
    .

Upon visiting the theatres to watch Maleficent and curling up on the couch to bask in the awesomeness that was ‘The Mountain and the Viper’, you will have stumbled upon two fascinating realities. First, the cost of movie tickets is becoming astronomically high. Second, the characters of Maleficent and Daenerys Targaryen have way too many things in common. Like, they’re basically the same person.
    .

Need convincing? Let’s compare one Disney villainess who we love to hate with one little Targaryen who everyone just loves. What do you think? Sound off in the comments below to share your take on these two characters’ similarities!
    .

    8. They’re Both Loners And They’re Never Invited Anywhere
    ————————————————————-
Basically every trial and tribulation that occurs in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty is due to King Stefan and Queen Leah’s somewhat shady decision to not invite Maleficent to Princess Aurora’s birthday celebration. On the one hand, yeah, we get that Stefan and Leah are hesitant to throw The Mistress of All Evil an invite to their daughter’s shindig.
    .

On the other hand, it’s kind of a slap in the face for Maleficent, especially when every other freakin’ person in the kingdom would be making it out to the party. Had she received a pity invite, Maleficent probably wouldn’t have even gone because she’s too much of a recluse. But, hey, then we wouldn’t have a story.
    .

Similarly, Daenerys Targaryen is a bit of a loner as well. Between schlepping through the desert with her once husband and making plans to conquer King’s Landing, one can surmise that the Mother of Dragons doesn’t have the most hectic social calendar. She didn’t get an invite to Rob Stark’s (red) wedding, nor was her attendance requested at Joffrey’s (purple) wedding. It’s hard out there for a Targaryen.
    .

    7. They’re Both High-Born
    ———————————–
We don’t really know much about Maleficent’s past… or present, for that matter. All we do know is that upon crashing Aurora’s royal birthday celebration like a boss, she was addressed by Queen Leah as “Your Excellency.” That, and she has a sweet castle not too far from King Stefan’s. Chances are Walt Disney Pictures circa 1959 wasn’t too concerned with going in-depth about a villain’s backstory, so we’ll leave that to Robert Stromberg’s interpretation with Lady Cheekbones herself, Angelina Jolie, starring in the title role.
    .

Daenerys Targaryen is the only surviving heir of the Mad King, Aerys II Targaryen. Therefore, she (arguably) has the most legitimate claim to the Iron Throne. (Depending on whom you ask, of course.) With her many fancy titles (e.g. Daenerys of House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, Princess of Dragonstone, Queen of Andals and the First Men, Lady Regnant of the Seven Kingdoms, Protector of the Realm, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, Mother of Dragons, Queen of Meereen, etc.), you know she’s the real deal. An OG, if you will.
    .
    6. They Both Have Mad Swag
    ———————————

Maleficent may be bitter, cruel and demented, but homegirl has style. She really made the same-one-outfit-all-the-time trend that Karl Lagerfeld, Vera Wang, Jean Paul Gaultier, etc. have picked up in the contemporary fashion arena. That black and purple cloak billowing in the wind could inspire fear in any charming prince or mythical creature and, aside from Lady Gaga, there aren’t many people who can pull off a headdress made complete with goat horns.
    .

A rough childhood, some twisted brotherly abuse, a shaky marriage and a rough jaunt through the desert has made Dany grow tougher, more confident and far more brave than the Dany we came to know at the beginning of the series. It would be easy to say that the little Targaryen that could has the most street cred out of all Game of Thrones characters. Also, her physical beauty is comparable to Helen of Troy and she’s rockin’ purple eyes. PURPLE. EYES. #SWAG
    .
    5. They Both Really Dislike The Monarchy
    ———————————————-
Unimpressed with not receiving an invite to Princess Aurora’s birthday celebration/christening thing, Maleficent crashes the party, throws King Stefan and Queen Leah shade then curses their newborn baby. No big deal. Can you imagine that happening to Prince William and Kate Middleton? Nah, they’d probably have far more capable security guards. And who could curse Prince George?
    .
Daenerys has one or two reasons to not be the biggest fan of the ruling house of Westeros (i.e. House Baratheon.) She is the last living offspring of the Targaryen family, the Westeros-ruling dynasty that was usurped by Robert Baratheon. Her eldest brother (Rhaegar Targaryen) was murdered by the hands of Robert Baratheon. Soon after, her crazy “Mad King” father (Aerys II Targaryen) was betrayed and murdered by Jaime Lannister, a member of his own Kingsguard. Dany firmly believes that she is the true ruler of the Seven Kingdoms and really, who can blame her?
    .

    4. They’re Both Lacking In The Critical Thinking Department
    —————————————————————-
Maleficent bestows her “gift” to Princess Aurora, a curse that will have the blonde beauty prick her finger on a spinning wheel on her sixteenth birthday and, ultimately, cause her untimely death. She doesn’t think to consider the three fairies, all of whom possessing magical powers of their own that have the potential to impose a threat to her flimsy plan. The idea of a curse lasting sixteen years is very elegant, sure, but a lot can happen between now and then. Maleficent may be the most evil person in the room, but she certainly isn’t the brightest.
    .
Meanwhile in Westeros, Dany takes a page out of Abraham Lincoln’s book and frees legions of slaves from Astapor. Awesome, right? But her altruistic endeavour hits a bit of a snag when it’s brought to her attention that without structure and order, the city and its people will spiral into lawless anarchy. We know you’re new at this, but is this not something you should have foreseen happening, Dany? I guess it’s the thought that counts.
    .

    3. They’re Both Pyromaniacs
    ————————————————————
As we are well aware, Maleficent knows how to make an entrance. When we first see her in Sleeping Beauty, she materialises in a pretty freakin’ sweet torrent of green fire. Even when Maleficent has Princess Aurora under a hypnotic spell prior to the infamous finger-pricking scene, it’s an orb of green flame that ominously guides the birthday girl to her not so eternal slumber. We see more of this flame in the third act, but we’ll get into that later.
    .
“I am Daenerys Stormborn and I will take what is mine with fire and blood,” said Daenerys Stormborn as she took stuff using fire and blood. Dany is a bit of a pyromaniac… and we love her for it. Whether it’s casually bathing in scalding hot water, sauntering into Khal Drogo’s blazing funeral pyre or when she is exposed to Drogon’s flame, she remains impervious to fire and extreme heat. I guess that’s where her whole “the Unburnt” title comes from. Allegedly, Dany even knows how to set fire to the rain. Wait, that might be Adele. Yeah. No, that’s definitely Adele

    .

    2. They Both Have Plucky Advisors, Sidekicks And Semi-Mute Supporters
    ———————————————————————————–
Maleficent’s right-hand man is actually her pet raven, Diablo. He plays a similar role to the Queen’s raven from Snow White, but Diablo is far more useful. He proves to be more of a confidante and assistant to Maleficent than a lackey. Diablo is the one who successfully locates Princess Aurora after Maleficent’s team of dim-witted goons divulge that they were searching for a baby for the entire sixteen years. As you can imagine, this failed logic did not sit well with the Mistress of All Evil.
Along the way, Daenerys has managed to accumulate her fair share of supporters. Jorah Mormont, an exiled knight and former head of House Mormont and Lord of Bear Island, has become Dany’s most trusted companion and advisor. He’s also the poster boy for being friend-zoned, so that’s something.
    .

Missandei, a former Naathi slave, is Dany’s personal servant. She’s pretty much the Tina Fey to Dany’s Amy Poehler. Interestingly, Missandei’s three brothers are among the Unsullied, an army of unquestionably loyal eunuch slave soldiers from Astapor that Dany now commands. She may be endorsing slavery, but at least Dany gave her crew of merry Unsullied the option of freedom before recruiting them for a perilous journey that would likely lead to their deaths. So, there’s that
    .

    1. MOTHERF^#*&@% DRAGONS
    ——————————————————-
You have to leave the best for last, right?
Upon discovering Diablo being turned into stone and Prince Philip making his escape, Maleficent becomes enraged. After attempting to strike down Philip with lightening bolts, she summons a forest of thorns to surround King Stefan’s castle. In one of the most iconic scenes in Disney history, Maleficent appears before Philip and TRANSFORMS INTO A F&$#@^& DRAGON. Spraying green flames (Battle of the Blackwater, anyone?) every which way, Maleficent engulfs the thorns with fire and Philip is driven backwards towards a cliff.
    .
SPOILER ALERT: Maleficent ends up being impaled with Philip’s sword and falls off a cliff, but at least she went down in a blaze of glory, right?
    .
Like she says right before walking into Khal Drogo’s burning funeral pyre: “No, no, my good knight, do not fear for me. The fire is mine. I am Daenerys Stormborn, daughter of dragons, bride of dragons, mother of dragons, don’t you see?” This pretty much sums it up for Dany’s symbiotic, motherly relationship with her three dragons, Viserion, Rhaegal and Drogon. SHE’S THE F*$^#%& MOTHER OF DRAGONS. Dany’s going to shower King’s Landing with fire, blood, Unsullied, etc. and take what (arguably) belongs to her! She just, y’know, has to get there first… good luck with that, kiddo! “Dracarys!”
