How can a movie open with 26 million and end up with 48?

  • EOT-140million worldwide

That is only part of the story.
EOT made 140 million worldwide- not too far off of Angie’s.

It is way too early to call it all from one weekend but it is far from a flop
and ALL stars are relying on overseas for big budget films these days.
It hasn’t even opened in Japan yet, the country from wish the film was based off a box from.

  • EOT-140million worldwide

    Here are stats for Fault
how are they saying it beat Edge if it only made 17million world wide

  • So Sad

The A-List is shrinking. So happy Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent is doing well. The tweens have taken over the entertainment world. They support bad music and movies. That is why old singers like Beyawnce, J LO and Mariah are singing nursery rhymes. They are trying so hard to get that teen money.

  • marie

They made 26 million on Friday night. $8 million was the total for the whole weekend

  • marie

    $48 *

I am glad that FIOS is doing well don’t get me wrong but perspective is also important.
It was mentioned that FIOS did $48million for the whole weekend US and other places we see it did $65million worldwide.
The EOT movie did 140million worldwide even though it was about 20million behind here.
In the long run EOT will make a lot more money world wide and still of course can pull more in domestically.

  • So Sad

Tom Cruise debuts at #3.Wow. I said Tom Cruise. Love or hate him he is an A-list celebrity. People need to realize that the A-Listers have been replaced by D-listers. It all begin around 2007-2008 when all the tabloids started putting reality people on the covers every week. Octomom, Teen Moms, The Bachelors, The Housewives and the Kardashians. D-listers need publicity for their fake reality shows to stay relevant. So they were more than willing to do “exclusive” interviews.

Every actor knows any publicity is good, even if it is made up every week. It keeps your name and image visible. I am sure there a lot of celebrities that missed being on the tabloids. But they will never admit it. Jennifer Aniston entire post Friends career is due to the Brangelina triangle.

  • Pikes

Wow, I didn’t expect to be in 3rd place.

  • Roberta

@marie: Marie, I know that. What I meant was I was surprised it ended up with only 48 million. It should have been more than that, giving it opened to 26 million on a single day.

  • Que

    @EOT-140million worldwide:

Lots of rabid Scientologists posting here. Can’t fool us pal: The Fault of the Stars only cost $12 million to make and has already earned back the money this weekend and more. Plus it beat all expectations and beat the beaver toothed Cruise but good. Edge of Tomorrow wasn’t even second. It was third.

Just saw “Chef.” Now THAT was a good movie

  • Que

@EOT-140million worldwide: Um, pal, because the US box office is always what is measured in US Box office grosses? How much is Scientolgy paying you to post here?

  • lauren

The fault in our Stars only realised in a few countries! This numbers will be huge in a couple days.

  • len

Shailene is the Queen!First Divergent and now TFIOS.

  • ona

TFIOS will hit theaters in the UK on June 20th,I CANT WAIT!

  • Oh Please

It gets really old bring religion into it all the time.
Just because someone has a different view doesn’t mean they are a cult member or an anti-cos if they are on the other side.
So much bitterness in a post.

  • Que

@@5: Um, pal, the budget of your Scientologist’s movie was 200 million. Fault of the Stars was only $12 million and it has already recouped its investment FOUR TIMES OVER ON THE FIRST WEEKEND.

  • Mes

For a worldwide premiere with that budget is a failurel!EOT

  • PFF

TFIOS is modest drama against big-budget spectacle EOT.You cant compare! But i think that TFIOS win this.

  • Fercat

A missed opportunity for a franchise.
TFIOS could have been a trilogy.

  • Jones

Hurray for Maleficent. Angie’s film is on track to gross $200M domestic and $400M overseas for a total of $600M worldwide when all is said and done. Woo-Hoo!!

  • Que

@Oh Please: Huh? Cruise did himself NO favors to the millions and millions of people in this world whose lives have been saved by psychiatry, by going on the Today show and attacking Matt Laurer for being “glib” because he believed in it. Cruise tried to impose his beliefs on us while doing a publicity tour. He’s fair game

I don’t care how long ago he did it. Those who have left the creepy and disturbing Scientology like director Paul Haggis, have horrifying things to say about it.

We should be discussing Cruise’s disturbing beliefs more often, not less. He went and opened his big mouth and attacked others who don’t believe as he does. He reaps what he sows, pal.

  • BBG123

No doubt it didn’t open too well at home and this will give some hater trolls something to nibble on for a while but they would be mistaken if they think it’s the final say on either of these movies. Edge will be a profitable film.
I saw Edge and thought it was great.
Plan to see TFIOS later this week. It also looks good.
    Good luck to both.

  • Christina

I’m so happy TFIOS did so well this weekend. I saw it on Friday and cried the whole last half of the movie. Shailene is so good, I can’t say enough how good an actress she is! I hope she plays Alaska when Looking For Alaska inevitably gets made, although I doubt she will since it’s another YA.

  • GDI

Soulfully acted, especially by a never-better Shailene Woodley, and several degrees smarter than most films aimed at teenagers.TFIOS

  • Meh

These two movies were pitted together obviously because they opened the same day but it’s not exactly apples to apples. Both are probably very good for their perspective movie types.
People are already referring to Edge of Tomorrow to last years Sci-Fi Pacific Rim.
It started weak with only $37 opening domestic but went on to make $411 worldwide with $102mil being domestic and $309 global and it had a budget of $190Mil.
