‘It has nothing to do with sex, everything to do with power’: Angelina Jolie hosts summit to end rape being used as a weapon of war
    ===========================================================================================================

    .
Angelina Jolie today urged an end to rape being used as a weapon of war, as she co-hosted a summit in London with Foreign Secretary William Hague. The Hollywood star dedicated the four-day conference in London to a rape victim she met who ‘felt abandoned by the world’ and could not face telling her children about her past.
    .
The 39-year-old said today’s summit must send a message around the world that ‘it has nothing to do with sex, everything to do with power’. Mr Hague also announced that the UK will pledge a further £6million to support survivors of sexual violence in conflict. He added that it is only a ‘weak or inadequate man’ that abuses women.

The Hollywood star greeted a fan who grabbed her attention and passed her an envelope ahead of the four-day summit
    .
An unsigned note written by Angelina Jolie was pictured today at the opening of the four-day summit on sexual violence in war. It read: ‘All voices are valuable. Everyone. And All women and girls must be heard.’
    .
The Foreign Secretary William Hague (right) has hailed the ‘enormous transformative’ influence of Angelina Jolie in the campaign to end the ‘mass crime’ of sexual violence in conflict zones
    .
Angelina Jolie is a UN representative on sexual violence in war. She has been campaigning on the subject with Mr Hague (right) since the Coalition came to power in 2010
    .
The actress and UN special envoy gave an opening speech at the start of the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict in London this morning Speaking at the start of the summit alongside Mr Hague, Jolie dedicated the conference to a rape victim she met in Bosnia on a joint trip with the Foreign Secretary earlier this year. ‘I am so, so happy to be here, it has been long in coming, we have worked on this for quite a while,’ she said.
    .
‘On our way over, we spoke about the women we met recently on our last trip, and in particular, one woman, who said that she had yet to tell her child that she had been raped because she was so humiliated and she could not bring herself to admit it to him.
    • .
‘And she felt that having had no justice for her particular crime, in her particular situation, and having seen the actual man who raped her on the streets free, she really felt abandoned by the world.
‘On the way over, we thought ‘what is she going to think of this day? This day is for her.’
In a speech officially opening the summit Miss Jolie added: ‘We must send a message around the world that there is no disgrace in being a survivor of sexual violence, that the shame is on the aggressor.’
She said it is a ‘myth’ that rape is an inevitable part of conflict.
‘There is nothing inevitable about it – it is a weapon of war aimed at civilians. It has nothing to do with sex, everything to do with power,’ she said.
Angelina Jolie and William Hague open sexual violence summit
    .

The summit is being held at the ExCeL Conference Centre in east London and will last until Friday. Angelina Jolie is the UN Special Envoy on sexual violence in conflict The actress told the crowd at the opening of the End Sexual Violence in Conflict summit that she has met survivors in countries including Afghanistan and Somalia, and they are ‘just like us, with one crucial difference’.
    .
She said: ‘We live in safe countries with doctors we can go to when we’re hurt, police we can turn to when we’re wronged, and institutions that protect us. ‘They live in refugee camps, on bombed-out streets, in areas where there is no law, no protection, and not even the hope of justice.’
    .
Mr Hague has spoken of the ‘enormous transformative’ influence of Jolie in the campaign to end the ‘mass crime’ of sexual violence in conflict zones. He said he and the actress have worked closely to end rape in war zones for two years and would continue to do so.
    .
The Foreign Secretary said he and Jolie began campaigning two years ago because they ‘believe the time has come to end the use of rape in war once and for all’. In his opening speech, Mr Hague said: ‘We’re convinced this is an issue of international peace and security, that is central to conflict prevention, that it is fundamental to the advancement of women’s rights everywhere, and above all that it is a moral issue for our generation.’
    .
He said the facts are now beginning to emerge for all to see. ‘What would it say about Britain, or any other nation, if, knowing all this, we chose not to act, we chose to do nothing? ‘As was said with slavery in the 18th century, now we know the facts, we cannot turn aside.’
    .
To applause, he added: ‘We want to encourage men to speak out, to agree with us that it is only a weak or inadequate man who abuses women. ‘It’s not a sign of strength. It is the ultimate weakness and shame.’

    RAPE VICTIM HAILS ANGELINA JOLIE
    ————————————————————
An African woman raped during a violent ethnic conflict in the 1970s said the summit will be ‘emotional’. Emime Ndihokubwayo, 44, from Burundi, said the End Sexual Violence in Conflict summit marked a ‘critical moment’.
Ms Ndihokubwayo said she remembered hiding in bushes as a toddler in the 1970s.
    .
Her mother threatened to abandon her if she did not stop crying – and would say: ‘Better to lose one baby than get the whole family killed.’ Ms Ndihokubwayo has since dedicated her life to defending human rights.
    .
Speaking ahead of the summit, Ms Ndihokubwayo said: ‘It will be emotional as well. But also being emotional in fact is not a bad thing.’
    .
She described Angelina Jolie’s backing as a ‘great support’.
    .
The conference aims to draw up an international agreement on standards for documenting and investigating sexual violence in conflict zones in an attempt to ensure justice for victims. Campaigners are also pressing for armies to be trained to prevent sexual violence in conflict zones and for more support for survivors.
    .
Rape in war zones has a lifelong impact on hundreds of thousands of people, Mr Hague said, and the crime has affected most continents in the world and countries such as Syria, Rwanda, Congo and Colombia. ‘This is one of the great mass crimes of the 20th century and the 21st century, sadly,’ he told BBC Breakfast.
    .
‘If anything, this is getting worse – war zone rape as a weapon of war, used systematically and deliberately against civilian populations.’ Mr Hague paid tribute to Jolie, who is a special envoy for the UN Commissioner for Refugees, saying she had made an ‘enormous transformative’ difference to the campaign.
    .
‘What this campaign needs is big powerful governments of the world, like us, with a big diplomatic network and a big development budget to really get involved and take action, as we are,’ he said. ‘But it also needs people who will be listened to in a different way from governments and speak with their own personal authority and Angelina Jolie brings that.
    .
‘She is very committed to this, very knowledgeable about the issues, she has come up with many of the ideas for the campaign. ‘She and I have been working closely on this for the last two years and we will keep doing so.’ The Lara Croft actress was the star attraction at the summit – but has spent 10 years campaigning to end rape being used as a weapon of war
    .
William Hague said the Hollywood star’s impact on the global campaign to end sexual violence in war had been huge. He said: ‘She is very committed to this, very knowledgeable about the issues, she has come up with many of the ideas for the campaign.’
    .
Angelina Jolie hopes the four-day summit will result in concrete steps to ban the use of sexual violence in conflicts

They will also take part in meetings with youth delegates.
    .
Tomorrow they will attend an event to launch the international protocol to help strengthen prosecutions for rape in conflict.
    .
On Thursday, delegations from more than 100 countries will attend and Mr Hague will chair a ministerial meeting on security in northern Nigeria.

    .

There will be an exclusive screening of In The Land Of Blood And Honey, with the opportunity to hear its director Jolie and Mr Hague discuss the film and how it inspired the initiative that led to the summit. As part of the #TimetoAct campaign, a short animation has been produced to portray the horror of rape and sexual violence through the eyes of a child.

Hollywood star Jolie’s 10 year campaign to end rape in war
    —————————————————————————————
Angelina Jolie’s attendance at today’s Global Summit on Ending Sexual Violence in Conflict is the culmination of 10 years work on the subject Angelina Jolie may be one of the world’s most famous stars but she has got ‘credential as well as celebrity’, according to a senior director at a children’s charity.
    .
The Special Envoy for the UN Commissioner for Refugees and star of action adventure film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider has a ‘strong track record of knowing what she’s talking about’. Jolie’s interest in humanitarian affairs was piqued in 2000 when she went to Cambodia to film Tomb Raider, according to The UN Refugee Agency Website.
    .
She was named a Goodwill Ambassador in 2001 by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. In 2012, High Commissioner Antonio Guterres appointed Jolie as his Special Envoy. Anita Tiessen, deputy executive director of children’s charity Unicef UK, said that while she brings her fame to the summit she also brings experience.
    .
Ms Tiessen talked about the impact of the 2011 film written and directed by Jolie called In the Land of Blood and Honey which is set during the Bosnian war. ‘I think Angelina herself has shown a big commitment to the issue over the last ten years that she’s been an envoy for the issue.
    .
‘So yes she clearly brings her fame to the issue and so that attracts a lot of media. But I think she’s got a strong track record of knowing what she’s talking about, of really taking action. ‘I was recently in a meeting and the film that she did about rape and abuse during the Bosnian conflict, I heard somebody say very, very powerfully that what that’s done is that it’s made it possible for people in Bosnia to talk about things that they’ve been keeping inside for a long, long time, so I think she’s got credential as well as celebrity,’ she said.
    .
Ms Tiessen said she believes the summit is going to be ‘hugely significant’, and said there has been a build-up of about 18 months of work led by Foreign Secretary William Hague. She also said she thinks the week ‘will be very, very emotionally charged’. ‘I’ve heard children talk about how they’ve been sexually abused, or how they’ve been threatened with sexual abuse, and clearly it’s a very, very…it cuts close to the bone. ‘It’s not something that people talk about easily,’ she said.

The Guardian view on Angelina Jolie: star attraction
    ============================================

The Guardian, Monday 9 June 2014 21.23 BST
    .

Without Angelina Jolie … representatives of 140 countries would not be gathering in London to try to make a difference

Angelina Jolie, who is co-hosting the conference on ending sexual violence in conflict that opens today in London, is a highly regarded, very highly paid, Oscar-winning film actor with a burgeoning career as a director. She is also hyper-beautiful and – killer blow – half of a celebrity couple. To some people that excludes her from doing pretty well anything that might be described as worthwhile, like being a champion of the millions of women who have been raped, mutilated and abused, the casual collateral of too many wars.
    .
The writer Paul Theroux accuses her and people like her of seeking “a landscape on which [they] can sketch a new personality”. On these very pages, she has been accused of vanity and hypocrisy. The cult of celebrity, this narrative implies, is trivial and the people on whom it is centred are trivial too. They cannot, therefore, engage with the serious except as a tawdry act of self-promotion that ends up trivialising things that actually matter.
    .
This is an absurd generalisation that damages the many well-intentioned efforts of famous people and belittles the energy, compassion and commitment that have distinguished Angelina Jolie’s campaign.
    .
As TS Eliot put it, to do the right deed for the wrong reason raises an interesting moral question. But if even the fleeting attention of a star like Madonna to, say, extreme poverty in Africa can inspire more people to act to alleviate it, then it is hard to condemn merely because some of the glow of philanthropy will benefit her. There may be an argument, too, about celebrity over-simplifying complex issues. There may be a debate about the value of particular campaigns. But not, surely, about the need for attention in the first place.
    .
Angelina Jolie brings much more than glamour to this week’s conference. She has taken a profound interest in the impunity of the men who rape women and children – and boys and men – as a weapon of war. Her study of the experience of Muslim women in Bosnia, raped repeatedly by Serb soldiers in a determined effort to impregnate them with “Christian” babies, led to her directoral debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, which was described by the Guardian’s reviewer as “born out of scrupulous research and deeply held conviction”.
    .
Plenty of controversy surrounds the high ambition of the London conference. There are charges for the co-host William Hague to answer about Britain’s laggardly approach to women seeking refuge here who have been victims of sexual violence in conflict. But what is not in doubt is that without the commitment of Angelina Jolie and her determination to find a framework in which justice for the victims becomes at least possible, representatives of 140 countries would not be gathering in London to try to make a difference.

Angelina Jolie, UK’s Hague, vow action against sexual violence in war
    =====================================================
    .
    LONDON Tue Jun 10, 2014 9:28am EDT
    .
LONDON (Reuters) – Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie and British Foreign Secretary William Hague vowed on Tuesday to ensure the world’s first summit on ending sexual violence in conflict resulted in practical action to punish those responsible and help victims. Up to 1,200 government ministers, military and judicial officials and activists from up to 150 nations are attending the June 10-13 summit that is the result of a two-year partnership between Jolie and Hague to combat rape as a weapon of war.
    .
The summit follows a series of violent incidents against women that was expected to raise pressure for action, including the kidnap of 200 Nigerian schoolgirls, the stoning of a pregnant Pakistani woman to death, and the gang-rape and murder of two Indian girls.
    .
Opening the four-day summit in London’s docklands, Jolie, special envoy of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), said political will was needed globally to treat sexual violence as a priority and tackle a culture of impunity.
“It is a myth that rape is an inevitable part of conflict. It is a weapon of war aimed at civilians .. done to torture and humiliate people and often to very young children,” she said.
    .
“We need to see real commitment and go after the worst perpetrators, to fund proper protection for vulnerable people, and to step in to help the worst-affected countries.”
    .
Jolie’s involvement in humanitarian issues dates back to 2001 when she traveled to Sierra Leone as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador and saw the impact of years of civil war when an estimated 60,000 women were raped.
    .
Her link-up with Hague was sparked by her 2011 directorial debut “In the Land of Blood and Honey” that was set against the backdrop of the 1992-95 Bosnian war in which more than 100,000 people were killed and an estimated 20,000 women believed raped.
    .
Last year the unusual partnership led to the launch of a declaration, now signed by about 150 countries, pledging to end impunity and provide justice and safety for victims but Hague said the summit would take this further.
    POWER IN NUMBERS
    ——————————-
Hague said the conference, to be attended by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, would agree a protocol to push for international standards on recording and investigating sex crimes to bring more people to justice.
    .
Other practical steps would include strengthening laws in certain countries, training armies and peacekeepers, and increasing funding to help survivors, some of whose harrowing stories were retold in documentaries on show at a fringe event.
    .
“There is power in numbers and if we unite behind this cause we can create an unstoppable momentum and consign this vile abuse to history,” Hague said, unveiling a six million pound ($10 million) fund for victims from the UK government.
Organizations with stands at the meeting and members of the public attending the fringe event of theater and discussions said concrete action was critical and that the public and activists needed to ensure governments stuck to promises made.
    .
“The momentum is with this summit, with Angelina Jolie and Hague and the news agenda – now is the perfect time for action on women’s rights. This could be a turning point,” said Nick Harvey, spokesman for healthcare charity Doctors Of The World.
    .
Canadian lawyer Guylaine Grenier, on holiday in London with her niece from Vancouver, said this should be just the start. “I hope it does not end here, that it goes further. This kind of event should happen every year so we can see what has really happened in the past year,” Grenier, 45, told Reuters.

UK pledges more support for victims of sexual violence in war
    -
Foreign Secretary William Hague announces new funding to help expand work to help victims of sexual violence at the Global Summit.
    -
Britain will provide new assistance to help victims of sexual violence in developing countries rebuild their lives through a new commitment from the Department for International Development.
    .
Announced by the Foreign Secretary at the opening of the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict, the new funding will help the UN and International Organisation of Migration to expand their work to help survivors.
    .
Commenting on the commitment, International Development Secretary Justine Greening said: “Rape and sexual violence destroy the lives of countless women and their families. We know that girls who suffer violence are more likely to do badly at school, die during child birth or contract HIV.
    .
“We can put an end to this. Our major new contribution will help survivors rebuild their lives and prevent future attacks.”
    .
The Department for International Development will invest £5 million to prevent sexual violence and help survivors. This includes:
    .
£4.25 million contribution to the UN Trust Fund on violence against women. This will expand their work and existing support services to help survivors of sexual violence.
£750,000 for a pilot with the International Organisation for Migration to speed up the referral of survivors of sexual violence in refugee camps across the developing world to people with the right skills and expertise to help them.
This new investment complements DFID’s existing programmes to address violence against women and girls in over 20 developing countries and substantial investment in research to understand how best to prevent violence against women and girls.

Phool, ladies, today was a very emotional day. I will come to Angelina in a moment. But this summit, phew! The stories are so harrowing, so moving, so incomprehensible. Several times during the day I got a lump in my throat. One image of a little boy nearly finished me off. I won’t describe it because it’s too awful but it will remain with me.
I am in AWE of the people across the globe working to deal with these atrocities and this brutalization of humankind – I say humankind because men, women and children are all victims in one way or another.

My husband and I have just completed our latest visit to Hotel Ta’ Cenc, Island of Gozo, and it was equally as good as any other time we have visited — great staff, great place, peace and quiet, etc.

However, this was the first time we had visited when il Kantra Lido & Restaurant had been open. What a place, what views, superb food, just perfect!

One observation I would like to make is that even though sea bathing is marvellous, I feel that during the high season, bathing has become somewhat dangerous due to private power boats using the inlet. If it were possible to put up a chain with “NO ENTRY” signs hung from it, maybe safety concerns would be removed. The only other issue I have is that I would rather they not cater at all to Hollywood trash such as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt; Jolie left her vile filthy whore panties everywhere, disgusting whore that she is!

The excel centre is quite a distance from central London so you have to be pretty committed to make the effort.
    People were committed!
They came from everywhere, Africa, USA, Scandinavia, Middle East etc. But I was especially pleased to see Londoners making the effort. In the afternoon a group of local schol children came; boys and girls which was great.

Today, on the front page of The London Evening Standard there is a huge photo of Angelina. It’s the only story on the front page. It’s a lovely picture – I’m sure Phool has posted it (I haven’t had a chance to read the thread). But no Londoner travelling today can have failed to know why Ms Jolie is in town and how she has now transcended mere movie stardom, even superstardom.
She is in a whole different league of stardom, beyond Hollywood, beyond politics, beyond charity work. She is Princess Diana with clout and brains. She is probably beyond royalty too.

Before I get on to Angelina I want to mention Stella McCartney.
I’ve never really warmed to her before but today I did.
It’s very easy to be in close proximity to the the famous in this summit.
Aside from the zealous security guys and the annoying women ushers who hold off everyone else so THEY can get photos, lol, you see them up close and hear them speak.

Stella is prettier in the flesh and seemed very down to earth and pleasant.
She and Angelina hugged very warmly (what would Paltrow say???) and after Angelina took her to a few stalls and left, Stella walked around chatting to various women from the NGOs. She treated the fans very sensibly saying she couldn’t do selfies with everyone but she would pose for photos so everyone got a shot. ctd

I believe the population of China is currently around 1.35 BILLION so if 1 billion boycott that leaves 350MIL who’ll go see the movie. The US population is 318MIL. Ergo, using troll logic, Maleficent should do about the same or slightly better than in the US, right? LOL!
    .
BTW – I’m laughing that it took the troll a whole week to find that story saying a few people were ticked off because Angie said Ang Lee is Taiwanese. It’s a new talking about point so I guess better late than never is better than having them rehash Angie’s past again…except she did that yesterday, too…

    3. Now to Angelina.
Somehow I ended up standing next to the editor of the Evening Standard when Angelina entered which was a good spot. I got some good close up shots.
What can I say? The woman behind me started hyperventilating! I know how she felt.
Let me spell it out: Angelina Jolie is beautiful beyond words.
Later in the afternoon I heard a woman telling someone on the telephone about seeing Angelina. She said ‘ her face, it’s it’s unreal. She IS beauty.’
    I don’t think I can better that so I won’t try!!
Her poise is regal. Yet, unlike the royals, when she saw someone she recognized, she broke out into a broad smile that exuded warmth. The way she and Stella M hugged was not perfunctory, there was that same warmth.

The funniest part for me was the goofy look on the faces of the men who were there. Whether they were part of the staff or fans, they all just had this totally dopey look; mouths wide open, blushing furiously like little boys, just gaga. It was genuinely funny and cute.
The women just had heart palpitations!
When they made their speeches on stage people clamoured over each other to get photos and videos.
The woman sitting next to me had earlier loftily claimed she wasn’t a fan. But when Angelina came on stage, I’ve never seen anyone contort their body the way this woman did to get a photo!
I managed to get some decent photos and a video. I will use them for a website.
    ctd below

    Gold Dust Woman Says:

Finally, I want to make a few observations.
There are some private sessions at this summit that are closed to the public and media. But in the media suite you can listen to the discussion and watch it on a screen.
I saw a bit of one discussion. it was difficult to listen to. Raw, painful, horrible stuff. And I thought to myself, this movie star doesn’t have to do this. She could be live a totally superficial life. yet, there she was, listenign intently to these accounts. There she was today, a vision in white going around the conference talking to great and the lowly with equal interest.
And I found a new respect for this woman.
Not celebrity fandom but genuine respect.
The tabloids, Aniston, Huvane, the nasty bloggers – they really are just dirt beneath this woman’s shoe. As for the trolls who slither across the internet – well they are beneath even the dirt.

Thanks for answering my question. That was a pretty bad comment. Kind of bitter and catty too. I think someone who has worked in the industry as long as Doug should have more tact when discussing other industry professionals especially when using their name. I don’t recall any interview where Angie threw any director under the bus the way he did there. That says a lot …. she IS a professional.

This morning I got up believe me I had heart palpations about this summit, just the grand scale of this event was overwhelming and I was like praying nothing goes wrong. You know how some fundamental lunatics are targeting big events no matter at what cost, saying that, that was my only fear or should I say concern. I can’t describe how proud I am of our girl Angie, She delivered an outstanding, emotional and intelligent speech, no wonder whoever heard it has come away with high regards for her. She’s not a flash in the pan celebrity; she is what she is, and she owns it with her sincerity & humbleness. I loved the white on her she looked very regal.

Angelina Jolie: We can eradicate warzone sex crime
    ========================================
    .

Angelina Jolie has told Newsbeat warzone sex crime is something “we can eradicate”.
    .
Talking at The Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict the actress said: “This is a very, very common circumstance, this is a sickness.”

Jolie, who is also a UN Special Envoy, added: “Everywhere we go, it’s one of those things you can’t quite get your head around. Everybody has come together that is why this is such an unusual summit.”
    .
The actress added: “It’s a rare thing. You go around the world and you see different people working on issues but you rarely see them in the same room working together.”
She described warzone sex crime as part of “a tide of injustice around the world”.
The four-day summit on sexual violence in war is being held in London and is being hosted by Jolie and UK Foreign Secretary William Hague.
    .
The event – the largest-ever of its kind – is the result of an intense two-year campaign to raise awareness.
Ahead of the summit, Mr Hague said rape was one of the “great mass crimes” of modern times.
He added: “We have a remarkable opportunity over the next four days to build the momentum needed to tip the world past point of no return.”
    .
Jolie, 39, became interested in the issue after making her film The Land Of Blood And Honey, which focuses on conflict in Bosnia during the 1990s.
According to the actress, there have been less than 50 convictions in the country out of a suspected 50,000 cases of sexual violence in conflict.
    .
She agreed that it is disheartening to know that the problem is still on such a large scale.
She added: “Somehow we haven’t had the political will strong enough to make sure that people who commit such crimes are punished.
    .
“Rape is something that happens to every single country, every people. To me I don’t look at it as a humanitarian situation. It’s something that is a horror.
“As a woman I’m quite emotional about it. I think of my daughters I think of my sons. Many young boys are raped, and men.”
    .
The UK Foreign Secretary has called on the 140 nations attending the summit to write action against sexual violence into their army training.
Nations taking part in the summit include Bosnia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Somalia – countries where sexual violence has happened “on a vast scale”, Mr Hague told the BBC.
He said: “I hope we will be able to agree on new international standards of how to investigate and document crimes of sexual violence.”
    .
Mr Hague has said he would like to remove warzone rape from the world’s arsenal of cruelty.
He added: “It’s a very big ask but I think we have to be ambitious. Young people all over the world will want us to be ambitious.
“A new generation has the opportunity to change this with different standards, with a different morality.”
When asked if the UK’s standards of dealing with rape were anything to be proud of, Mr Hague said: “A lot of work is going on on this.
    .
“The director of public prosecutions made announcements about this last week. The length of sentences is going up.”
He’s referring to a major new action plan to tackle rape announced last week.
In the last year the total number of completed prosecutions and convictions increased, but the conviction rate has dropped from 63.2% in 2012-13 to 60.3% in 2013-14. The action plan announced also aims to address this fall in conviction rate, while maintaining the rise in volumes.

Grace of Monaco bombs at UK box office
    ============================
    • .
Nicole Kidman film Grace of Monaco has bombed at the UK and Ireland box office, taking just £238,862 in its opening weekend.
The movie, which stars Kidman as Hollywood star-turned-princess Grace Kelly, was shown on 332 screens, box office tracker Rentrak said.
It equates to £719.46, or 110 customers, per cinema over the weekend.
The movie has generally received poor reviews, with The Telegraph calling it “fantastically silly”.
The paper’s critic, Robbie Collin, said the acting was “heightened”, and the script “thoroughly awful”.
“Surely no one makes a movie this bad by accident,” said the BBC and Observer film critic Mark Kermode, adding it was “not Nicole Kidman’s finest hour”.

I’ll fight to end war rape for as long as I’m alive, says Angelina Jolie as she arrives at summit in London
    =====================================================================================
    .
    Published: 10 June 2014
    .
Exclusive interview: When Angelina Jolie speaks, heads of state listen. A superb negotiator in designer clothing, she knows her power and is determined to use it to change global attitudes to war crimes
    .
As heads of Governments, NGOs, lawyers and doctors converge on the ExCel Centre today for an extraordinary summit, the Hollywood actress and campaigner Angelina Jolie arrives just in time to provide the fairy dust.
    .
Humanity can bear only so much policy – it deserves some beauty and charisma to sugar the pill. No one should doubt the star’s clout or commitment. When Jolie speaks, heads of state listen. She is a powerful voice on behalf of victims of war, particularly women. Her statement today is that the summit must answer the grievances of girls kidnapped in Nigeria, wives stoned in Pakistan and women raped in many war zones.
    .
“This sends a big message round the world, you see how women are treated as second class citizens and abused. This is to say: ‘No, you can’t and we will, in an organised fashion, come after you.’”
For Jolie, 39, this is personal. “I will work on this for as long as I am alive. For as long as it takes.”
    .
It is thanks to a remarkable partnership between the actress and the British Foreign Secretary William Hague that the issue of rape in war zones has such prominence. For students of politics and leadership, the method is almost as interesting as the topic.
    .
Politicians alone – with their poor standing on social media and their narrow processes cannot “shift the dial” on social change. But social change cannot happen without them. Legislation matters, Governments must be involved as well as “the people”. The summit today could be a template for how to tackle the big global issues.
    .
Jolie is convinced that this coalition of players is the way to crack social injustice. “If this works, it can spill out into all the other crimes against humanity. I think this kind of summit is the only way to address these issues in a comprehensive fashion to get change and make a difference.”
    .
She is shrewd enough to understand the value of her power base. I ask her if she is likely to move into conventional politics and she says, politely: “If I felt I could effect change, I would certainly consider it.” But isn’t she in a more powerful position as a globally known actress and humanitarian? “It is certainly more unusual. It is interesting to be able to work with all sides in all ways and to work as a citizen of the world. I wouldn’t want that taken away.”
    .
I note that Hillary Clinton’s autobiography – seen as presaging a presidential bid – is published today. Is Jolie backing her, or contemplating a role in her administration? She answers deliberately: “I shall be following every candidate.”
By working with whoever is in power, Jolie can makes things happen. She is a beauteous version of Henry Kissinger, a superb negotiator in designer clothing.
    .
We meet in a central London hotel, where Jolie has hardly had time to unpack before the summit. This is trivial hardship compared to last time we met, in March 2013, on an RAF flight to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
    .
Jolie joined William Hague to meet survivors of war rape and to flesh out a solution with the Governments of Congo and Rwanda. It was only after the trip that the media learned the actress had also undergone a preventative double mastectomy.I recall the unmade roads, and shuddering helicopters and asked what on earth made her do the trip at that time.
    .
Her preternaturally grey eyes fasten on me in surprise. “Honestly? There was no way I wasn’t going to be on that trip and certainly when you think of what those women suffer it was the least I could do.”
    .
She pauses: “And in a way, it helped to heal me because any pain or discomfort or concern I had became secondary in comparison. You would be ashamed if you did complain about it.”
    .
Later, Jolie made another bold decision. She kept quiet about her operation in the field, but later wrote about it when securely and privately back in LA. Once again, she refused to claim special privilege.
    .
“I do feel very human in my connection to others. I felt in that moment it was something I would have wanted other people to help me with.” She refers to her mother, who died of ovarian cancer at the age of 56: “To know I had this option and it could prevent me from dying young and leaving my children. It was something important to discuss and I have been so extremely grateful to women round the world who have in turn shared their stories.”
    .
For some commentators, it was an awkward association. Here was a Hollywood woman voted the most beautiful in the world. How would it affect her image to have her breasts removed?
    .
Jolie, whose humanitarian work has made her appreciative of unexpected goodness, says that she was “pleasantly surprised” by the general reaction of the public. “I grew up in Hollywood, so I was expecting more of that silliness, I expected more surface judgement.”
    .
Strong voice: Angelina Jolie leaves a G8 Foreign Ministers Meeting in London (Reuters)In a way, her operation was central to the Jolie persona. She is both sex symbol and madonna. Her rebellious child star self has given way to a kind of overflowing maternal spirit, with unusual empathy.
    .
She and her partner Brad Pitt have three children, adopted from Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam, as well as three biological children. Jolie, slender as grasses and with a Disney delineation of features, leans across the hotel sofa earnestly.
    .
“Always since I can remember as a little girl, I felt that I wanted to adopt; as soon as I was aware that there were children in the world who needed families. It seemed a natural thing to do. It seemed so simple, if you were ready to be a mother and children needed a home.”
    .
“But I think like most people I went through not being sure that I was good enough to be somebody’s mother. And especially I take very seriously bringing a child into my home that I did not give birth to. Maybe there is even an extra responsibility, a desire to earn this child. Then when I went to Cambodia, it was one of those strange moments when I just knew this is what was supposed to be.”
    .
An armchair psychologist might link the reverence for the maternal impulse with Jolie’s loss of her own mother: “I had a great mother,” she says. “It is hard to think I could ever be as good as she was. Her whole life was motherhood. Like every mother you hope you are making the right choices but I love my kids so deeply.” She says that because her children are “home schooled” they accompany her on some trips and she hopes will inherit “a bigger picture of life”.
    .
I had wondered if Jolie departmentalised her life into “Hollywood” and “the world” but it occurred to me that her humanitarian work finds unseen outlets. In her latest film, the Disney Maleficent, loosely based on Sleeping Beauty, she plays a fairy who falls in love with a human. He is ordered to kill her by the king, but instead strips her of her wings. She is desolate and bitter.
    .
Was this a metaphor for rape? “You are the first person to ask,” she beams. “I was wondering who would figure it out. I am so happy that you have. We were all very conscious of it, it was in fact rape, it was clear. She was with a man, she is violated and of course it is a Disney story but she goes through a period of losing herself and her femininity and her motherly qualities, then she is able to remember them again, in her case, because of a child.”
    .
Rape is not opaque in Jolie’s directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, being shown at the summit tomorrow, Wednesday. It is explicit and brutal. William Hague’s Bosnian special adviser, Arminka Helic, credits Jolie with an astonishing grasp of her country and the consequences of the war in the early 1990s.
    .
By contrast, Jolie’s next film, which she has directed and is currently editing, is about the heroism of war. It is called Unbroken, and is the tale of an All American legend, Louis Zamperini, an Olympic winner, a World War II prisoner of war, a survivor, a Christian.
    .
Was she deliberately scouting for a male role model? “Both my films have been war films. In extreme circumstances it brings out the worst and the best in human nature. In some ways, the films are not dissimilar. The unbroken strength of the human spirit, overcoming hate.”
    .
Jolie says she intends to direct and write more and act less while continuing to “ fight the good fight” through her humanitarian work.
    .
She is particularly interested in the balm of dignity given to victims of war. She describes a refugee asking her for soap. “ The woman explained to me how it hurt her not to be clean. That she wasn’t the woman I saw. She was so ashamed. And it is so painful for refugees not to be able to give their children what they ask for – I cannot imagine having to deny my children.”
    .
Today, Jolie will be among political leaders and ordinary women who have survived unspeakable horrors. She will be equally at ease with government statistics and personal anecdotes. The wild, tattooed Hollywood child turned global humanitarian crosses all boundaries. She is a one-woman soft power solution and William Hague’s chief weapon in executing change.
    .

NEWS/ Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Go on “Top Secret Trip” to Malta for New Movie—All the Details!
    -
Surprise, Malta! Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have paid you a visit!
E! News has learned that the Hollywood power couple flew to the small European country for a secret 36-hour film scouting trip connected to an upcoming project of Angelina’s.
“They arrived on a private jet. It was a top secret trip and no one knew they were coming,” a source tells E! News. “They are planning on shooting a movie here for 8-10 weeks from the middle of August. I do not know what the film is called. But it’s Angelina’s film. She’s in charge.”
They were taken by private car to a chartered yacht, which ferried them over to the island of Gozo, which makes up the Maltese island chain in the Mediterranean Sea.
    -
According to the source, “Angelina and Brad met up with some production crew as soon as they landed and got on a boat and and visited an island just off Malta called Gozo. Gozo is very small but it’s much greener and hillier than Malta itself. It has a small population of around 25,000-30,000 people.”
During the scouting trip, Brad stood back while his leading lady took charge.
“Angelina was definitely in control. She was talking about angles they would shoot from and which shots would work and which would not. Brad was with her but letting her be the boss. He would agree for most of the time and occasionally say why he didn’t think something might work,” the insider continues. “There was no PDA between them, but that was because they were with people. It was just all business as they toured the island.”
    -
Brad and Angie stayed at a five-star hotel on the island, which the source thinks “will likely also be used for their shoot as it has 4 kilometers of private land and its own inlet so it’s very quiet and peaceful and they won’t be bothered when they film there.”
Jolie recently hinted that she might retire from acting after her role as Cleopatra, when she told BBC Radio, “It’s one of those [roles] you feel like maybe that’s the one you put everything into and that’s where you end it. That’s where you finish, in a great way. You kind of go, ‘What could you do beyond that one?’ Put it all into that one.”
If that is the case, we can at least look forward to seeing more of Angie’s work from behind the camera.

I think Angie gave an even-handed response when asked which Chinese artists she wants to work with. She named Ang and said he was born in Tiawan, but he is Chinese and his films are in Chinese and most of his actors are Chinese. I think her answer was meant to not offend either side. But some are trying to put words in her mouth.

It’s just like when the media said Brad was punched by the pransker, But the film clearly showed that the nutter’s hand did not touch Brad and in the angle of the hand I could not see how it could have been a punch to the face. But that did not stop those in the media who wanted to, with glee I might add, make it appear as if Brad was punched in the face.

Angelina Jolie: Shame the rapist, not the victim. The actress opened the first annual Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict with a powerful speech. PRACHI GUPTA
    .
At a time when rape denialism in America feels stronger than ever, and overseas, girls in Nigeria are being kidnapped by the hundreds and girls in India are being gang-raped, the world’s first Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict could not come sooner. On Tuesday, actress and Envoy of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Angelina Jolie kicked off the four-day conference in London with a speech that urged the 1,200 attendees to stop seeing rape as an inevitable byproduct of war and blame the rapists, not the victims.
    .
“It is a myth that rape is an inevitable part of conflict,” said Jolie. “There is nothing inevitable about it. It is a weapon of war aimed at civilians. It is nothing to do with sex, everything to do with power. It is done to torture and humiliate people, and often to very young children.”
    .
This whole subject has been taboo for far too long, war zone rape is a crime that thrives on silence and denial,” Jolie continued. “The stigma harms survivors and it causes feelings of shame and worthlessness. It feeds ignorance such as the notion that rape has anything to do with normal sexual impulses. But most of all, it allows the rapist to get away with it. They feel above the law, because the law rarely touches them and society tolerates them.”
    .
Hoping that this summit will be a “turning point” in acknowledging a global crisis, Jolie concluded, “We must send a message around the world that there is no disgrace in in being a survivor of sexual violence, that the shame is on the aggressor.”

Is that true when Brad saw Angie for the first time it was thanks to a photographer of troy who worked with Angie in Tomb Raider ?

    César Says:

The interview Angie give to ES it´s very good and enlightening. Like many people, i toughed that Maleficent wings ripped out was a representation of sexual abuse but we can imagined other kind of aggression, but this journalist ask the right question and Angie was again very honest in her answer.

    http://www.standard.co.uk/news/world/angelina-jolie-vows-to-fight-to-end-war-rape-for-as-long-as-im-alive-as-she-arrives-at-london-summit-9518639.html

“….. In her latest film, the Disney Maleficent, loosely based on Sleeping Beauty, she plays a fairy who falls in love with a human. He is ordered to kill her by the king, but instead strips her of her wings. She is desolate and bitter.

Was this a metaphor for rape? “You are the first person to ask,” she beams. “I was wondering who would figure it out. I am so happy that you have. We were all very conscious of it, it was in fact rape, it was clear. She was with a man, she is violated and of course it is a Disney story but she goes through a period of losing herself and her femininity and her motherly qualities, then she is able to remember them again, in her case, because of a child.” …” ES

    ——

Very good metaphor to educate little children about the real evil in the world. Maleficent argument it´s superb but Angie is even more superb and amazing in her interpretation.

Angie is in a new top category that she is the only representative yet, She create a new definition for star-power, effective and global. She is playing in the world leaders field but it´s Angie that is the star , that put the ball in the goal. Angie is already a diplomat but now she can be a effective in the politics and change the world. This is the beginning. Go Angie…go…

The only other issue I have is that I would rather they not cater at all to Hollywood trash such as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt; Jolie left her vile filthy ***** panties everywhere, disgusting ***** that she is!

What it is to be A Woman?
    ====================
    .

By Victor Cherubim Published On:Wednesday, June 11, 2014
    .
( June 11, 2014, London, Sri Lanka Guardian) “It is not human to be a woman, but that is what we expect in war, to be called a woman. In the hierarchical structure in society, male dominance empowers life. Man is not only perceived as a symbol of patriotism, but conflict is the driver for his power. This is what it means to be a man, to be both patriotic and in conflict. Thus violence breeds man to overpower woman, in every part of the world.” So said Keedi of ABAAD, an organisation dedicated to the advancement and empowerment of women in Lebanon, at the landmark global summit to “End Sexual Violence in Conflict”.

    .
This three day event, 10-12 June 2014,of world men and women leaders was co-hosted by William Hague, British Foreign Secretary and Hollywood star, Angelina Jolie, Special Envoy of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees at Excel Centre, Docklands. London.
    .
The background on this summit is to translate the April 2013 G8 “Declaration on Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict”, followed by the launch of the UN General Assembly Declaration of Commitment of September 2013, backed by 150 nations, including Sri Lanka, to shatter the culture of sexual violence, increase the support for survivors and start changing the ground situation in most affected countries. Within a span of nine months real progress at grassroots international level is seen, in engaging the public to participate with over 160 events and the attendance of over 100 countries.
    .
“We want to encourage men to speak out, “said William Hague, “to agree that it is only a weak or inadequate man who abuses women. It is not a sign of strength, it is the ultimate weakness and shame.”
    .
“We will come after you” says Jolie
    —————————————————-

At the opening, actress and campaigner, Angelina Jolie said that the conference sends out a clear message, round the world, to those who abuse women, “in answer to the grievances of girls kidnapped in Nigeria, wives stoned in Pakistan and women raped in many war zones. You see how women are treated and abused. No you can’t and we will come after you.”
    .
“Politicians alone with their poor standing on social media and their narrow processes cannot shift the dial on social change. But social change cannot happen without them. Legislation matters, Governments must be involved as well as the people.”
    .
She gave the impression that she will work on this, for as long as it takes. She understood her power base and was also pragmatic about it. But stated she is determined to use it to change global attitudes to gender issues in war.
    .
    The victims of war
    —————————

In the various panel discussions at the summit, the norms of Manhood and Gender Relations were examined. The general consensus was to stop violence before it begins. Communities must undertake to study the root causes and design strategies of prevention. In most cases, changing deeply ingrained gender norms and attitudes become necessary, particularly in discussions engaging men in preventing violence against women.
    .
“The world makes violent men. Violence is a learned behaviour.” The suggestion is that you can beat violence through innovation, collaboration, contribution of resources, skills training, networking and influence. The data collected and available is that children, in particular girls, make up a significant number of survivors of sexual violence in many conflicts. Adolescent girls are most vulnerable due to a combination of their gender, age, religion and discriminatory social norms that affect their lives. This has been demonstrated recently in Syria, where the threat of sexual violence has been a major contributor to displacement as families flee the conflict. Unfortunately, an additional consequence has been, we were informed, an increase in early and forced marriages and “refugee” girls trafficking among others.
    .
    “Men are the big mystery”
    —————————————-

All over the world, men are the big mystery. Men commit sexual violence for a variety of reasons or for no apparent reason. Discriminatory social norms, like honour and shame, the restrictions on access to public space as well as public resources, community intent, the perception of religious beliefs and not religion as such, the fallacy of men being the stronger of the sexes, environment and school upbringing, all contribute to a false identity of man as the protector and guardian of women. When there is no apparent reason for sexual violence, power is the hidden motive. These manifest differently in different socio-cultural and political contexts and change3 distinctly within conflicts. Here it is well to remember, that our conflict in Sri Lanka seemed to be rather different to recent conflicts around different nations in the world. This perhaps, was in at least one salient feature of conflict, the ferocity and exuberance of anger. This may be debatable.
    .
    Is violence preventable?
    ————————————-

The underlying theme of the summit is to examine ways and means of prevention of “Sexual Violence in Conflict”. Sexual violence committed in conflict cannot be divorced from unequal power relations between men and women in peacetime. Ending sexual violence in conflict requires challenging gender inequality in peacetime. Empowering girls and women to resist violence, whether it is physical, verbal/psychological, sexual or economic, is one part of the equation, whilst to access justice and support when it does occur, is the other part of prevention.

Where is sexual violence happening in conflict zones?
    ===========================================
    .

    10 June 2014 at 17:40
    .

Angelina Jolie is in London heading up a summit on the use of rape as a weapon in war. Newsbeat takes a look at where this is happening across the world and on what scale. Sexual violence is under reported because of risks to survivors and witnesses as well as the people they confide in like human rights groups and journalists.
    .
Therefore it’s hard to get accurate data. WHO estimate that 150 million women and girls are raped every year in conflict zones. 73 million men and boys.
    .
So where is it happening right now?
    .
On what scale is this happening?
Because victims are often too afraid to come forward figures aren’t often available until after a conflict has ended and are usually based on estimates. These figures from a 2013 United Nations report give some kind of idea of the scale of the problem.
    .
Rwanda 1994 – between 100,000 and 250,000 women were raped during the three months of genocide there.
    .
Sierra Leone 1991-2002 – UN agencies estimate that more than 60,000 women were raped during the civil war.
    .
Liberia 1989-2003 – more than 40,000 women involved in sexual violence
    .
Democratic Republic of the Congo since 1998 – at least 200,000 victims.
    .
Former Yugoslavia 1992-1995 – up to 60,000 victims.

Scout hosting fundraiser for Zamperini tribute
    =====================================
    .

    Posted: Tuesday, June 10, 2014 6:53 pm

    .

OLEAN — A community group has worked diligently the last several months to raise funds for the Louis Zamperini monument that will be erected and dedicated in War Veterans Park in late August
    .
The newest individual to contribute to the memorial that will honor Mr. Zamperini, an Olean native and World War II hero, is Olean Boy Scout Alex Kruse. Mr. Kruse, a junior at Olean High School, will hold a spaghetti dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church parish hall at 109 S. Barry St. The cost is $7 per person, and proceeds will support Mr. Kruse’s Eagle Scout project to add landscaping around the Zamperini monument.
    .
Mr. Zamperini, who was also a world-class runner in the 1936 Olympics, will have his life story depicted in the movie “Unbroken,” which will be released at the end of the year. The film is being directed by Angelina Jolie, with the screenplay provided by Ethan and Joel Coen.
    .
The movie will depict Mr. Zamperini’s outstanding will to survive 47 days at sea after his military aircraft went down in the ocean. His never-give-up attitude also carried him through more than three years of brutality in Japanese prisoner camps. Mr. Zamperini’s story was chronicled in Laura Hillenbrand’s best-selling book of the same title, released a few years ago. He has also been selected to be the grand marshall of the 2015 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Calif., on New Year’s Day.
    .
The effort to erect a monument for Mr. Zamperini was lead by Olean businessman Jim Bardenett Jr. Mr. Bardenett coordinated an ad-hoc committee to raise funds for the monument and said the group has raised $18,000 of its $24,000 goal for the project. Mr. Bardenett, whose late grandmother was Mr. Zamperini’s godmother, said the group had contacted Mr. Zamperini’s daughter, Cynthia Garris, about the project. Ms. Garris said the family wholeheartedly gave approval for the monument as well as the images of Mr. Zamperini that will be etched into the stone. The monument is being designed by Curt Crandall of Crandalls Memorials.
    .
In an email to the Times Herald, Ms. Garris said her father “was really touched” when he learned about the monument.
    .
“I am greatly pleased and honored that the people of Olean would think of me in this generous way,” Mr. Zamperini said. “My sincerest thanks to all.”
    .
For his part, Mr. Kruse said he decided to help out with the monument because he is interested in local history and hopes to earn his Eagle Scout badge through the project. “We’re going to do the landscaping around (the monument) and put some bushes and daylilies in once it’s built,” Mr. Kruse explained.
    .
The scout said he is also interested in World War II history, but knew nothing about Mr. Zamperini until he heard about the local project in his honor.
    .
“I go to all the (committee) meetings, and they have everything set” for the dedication ceremony Aug. 23 in War Veterans Park, Mr. Kruse said, noting the event will be held the week of the 12th annual Rally in the Valley celebration.
    .
“I need to raise $400 to $500 (for the landscaping), but any extra amount I get I’m going to give to the Lou Zamperini (Tribute) Fund,” Mr. Kruse added.
    .
Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation officials said donations can also be provided to the Louis Zamperini Tribute Fund by visiting online at http://www.cattfoundation.org or calling 372-4433.

A blanket without borders: Angelina Jolie’s quilted gift from refugees and East End girls
    ===========================================================================
    .

    Updated: 12:40, 10 June 2014
    .

What do you get when you knit together the Women’s Institute from Shoreditch and refugees from conflict zones? A quilt of many colours, says Susannah Butter

On the floor is the largest knitted quilt I have ever seen. It’s colourful, pretty and has a powerful political message. This quilt was created by refugees and the Shoreditch Sisters Women’s Institute to raise awareness of how women who flee sexual violence and cross borders for safety may be treated if they seek asylum in the UK.
    .
It has been on tour to Yarl’s Wood Detention Centre to show the women there that people in London are thinking of them, and on Wednesday it will be at the ExCeL Centre for the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict, where a new quilt will also be sewn together as a gift for Angelina Jolie as she co-chairs the summit.
    .
Lauren Fuzi, 29, from the Shoreditch Sisters, had the idea to make a quilt last September, working with Women for Refugee Women. “We wanted a project where there wasn’t a divide between the WI and the refugees,” she says. “So we chose knitting as a skills swap. It is a relaxed way of getting to know people. We spoke about everything, Hollywood gossip, children …”
    .

When they heard about the summit they decided it was an opportunity to speak up for women in detention, and “Angelina was the girl for us as she is the summit’s female representative. It’s good she’s using her influence to help others”. Rachel Walker, 24, another Sister says: “We wanted to remind people if they support women who suffer sexual violence in conflict they can also treat them fairer within the asylum process. There is no need for these women to be locked up while their asylum status is being looked at. There are more dignified options.” Fuzi adds: “It doesn’t help with the cultural narrative around immigration that we are locking asylum seekers up like criminals. A lot of what they are fleeing is specific to women — FGM, forced marriage, prostitution, homosexuality.”
    .
One of the knitters was a woman called Jade, 44, a member of the London Refugee Women’s Forum. She left the conflict-torn African country where she is from in 2001, and her surname is being withheld to protect her.
“In my country I was tortured,” she tells me. “My husband was beheaded, my father and twin sister were shot on the same day, my mother was killed and my three children were abducted. I came here and was locked up in Oakington Detention Centre. I had been kept in the bush for two months so Oakington was like a five star hotel for me. But when you are locked up you want your freedom. These women are seeking protection, they have not committed a crime. Give them accommodation instead of locking them up. Let them be human beings again.”
    .
Women for Refugee Women found that majority of women who sought asylum and were detained in the UK were survivors of rape, and that detention had a negative impact on their mental health — one in five of the women they spoke to said she had tried to kill herself in detention.
    .
Jade still feels suicidal sometimes. “This year I foolishly overdosed myself. My friend found me and took me to hospital. I was so angry she did not let me die. When these things happen it doesn’t go away at all. And when you are in detention you think nobody cares and you almost give up. You keep it to yourself and that’s dangerous; that’s why so many commit suicide. We must speak out.”
    .
Today Jade is fighting, and celebrating the power of women. She is looking forward to giving a speech at the summit tomorrow alongside Shami Chakrabarti, Natasha Walter and Juliet Stevenson. “I will give them something to do,” she says, beaming. But now they must put their finishing touches to their magic quilt so it looks its best for the big event.

Commentary: The Standard is proud to support this bold and vital campaign
    ================================================================
    .
    Anna DavisUpdated: 12:12, 10 June 2014
    .
The horror of war rape is a shameful scar on the world.
    .
For centuries it has been seen as an inevitable part of conflicts. It is not —and Foreign Secretary William Hague and actress Angelina Jolie are urging global leaders to act now to prevent it.
    .
They are hosting a summit in London, which opened today, to mobilise nations to save women, young girls, men and boys from terrifying and life-shattering sex attacks while their countries are being torn apart by war.
    .
The Evening Standard is proud to fully support their bold and desperately needed campaign.
    .
Today’s paper is being edited in part from the ExCeL centre, where hundreds of delegates have gathered. This paper has supported the campaign by highlighting the plight of survivors, the stories of children born of rape and the work of Britain’s top military leaders in a series of articles. Our coverage has shown that war rape not only devastates victims physically and mentally, but it has repercussions beyond the immediate act. It perpetuates violence and disrupts communities for generations.
    .

London, which stood as a beacon of hope during Europe’s darkest hours, is a fitting venue for the summit. The message must reverberate out from the capital to the most far-flung reaches of the planet that war rape is a heinous crime that will not go unpunished.
    .
Perpetrators must be hunted down and jailed for their barbaric acts, legal systems need strengthening, armies have to be better trained and victims need more support. Crucially to achieve these aims, attitudes must change so sexual violence in conflict is seen as an evil that can and must be stopped. Sarah Sands, editor of the Evening Standard, said: “War rape is a complex problem but there is a collective will to stamp it out and change attitudes for good.”
    .
As he toured the conference fringe, Foreign Secretary William Hague said: “The Evening Standard is doing the world proud.” A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: “We are trying to do something that has never been done before — to change the entire global attitude towards sexual violence in conflict. “The Evening Standard’s commitment to this issue — both explaining why it matters as well as how Londoners can engage — has been admirable.” In this great cosmopolitan city, hundreds of thousands of people have been affected by conflicts in other parts of the world, many fleeing unthinkable horrors. It’s part of our identity in London to stand together for justice.

If you want to really reductive about it, most of David Ayer’s career has focused on telling stories about good guys and bad guys, usually centered around the world of police officers. He’s long been interested in exploring the men behind the badge, their moral and ethical conflicts and the dangerous ways they put their lives on the line each day. But for this next effort, he’s expanding that vision to the biggest battleground of all, World War II, and the first footage from “Fury” is here to show you some good guys caught in a very bad situation.
    .
Starring Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Jon Bernthal and Michael Pena, the movie is set in April 1945, and follows a five man tank crew who are outnumbered and outgunned as they embark on a mission to hit the Nazis right where it counts. It sounds like potentially potent stuff, and Sony agrees, dating the movie right in the heart of awards season. Could Brad Pitt get his fourth acting Oscar nomination this year? We’ll have to wait, but with a Best Picture trophy on his mantle for “12 Years A Slave” (he was a producer) he might not be sweating it too hard.

Sony used E3 to debut the first footage from David Ayer’s war movie “Fury,” which stars Brad Pitt, Logan Lerman, Shia LaBeouf, Michael Pena and Jon Bernthal.

The film is described as a WWII movie, “the likes of which we haven’t seen before.” That may actually be true, as much of the action is set in and around one bad-ass tank.
Set in April 1945, story follows the five-man crew as they set out on a Nazi-killing mission despite being outnumbered and outgunned.

John Lesher and Bill Block are among the producers of the movie, which Sony will release in the heart of awards season on Nov. 14.

    Hey there GC.
    .
    (1) I don’t have twitter;
    .
    (2) I’m still angry with Vatican and the Pope ought to be doing the things I suggested without needing any reminders from anyone seeing how it is forever concerned with where men put their “deeecks” and what women do with their female parts. The shame is that the Vatican needed to be reminded at all about condemning rape in conflict AND OPENLY SUPPORTING THE VICTIMS OF rape anywhere, anytime.
    .
    (3) Yes, I agree, any person accused of committing rape – whether done duringwar or not, deserves a proper defence with due process. so, until collection of evidence – *****, DNA etc. is improved during conflict, for most victims will not be able to prove a rape was committed by a particular individual when the conflict resolves. However, for those women who had babies as a result of the rape, the DNA of the children themselves and their ages would be evidence that the sexual act occurred with the fathers at a certain time during the war. Then there’s only one question: whether the act was consensual or not. Surely it must strengthen the victim’s case that the sexual act was not consensual if victim and rapist are on opposing side of the war? Surely corroborative evidence from other witnesses wouldn’t be needed?
    .
Incidentally, on the issue of corroborative evidence, some mullah in one of the Malaysian states wanted to introduce the “Islamic” law requiring four males to bear witness that the victim was raped – before the rapist could found guilty, never mind DNA tests etc.. It’s laughable. Fortunately, common sense prevailed and the idea was dropped.

The Draw Me to Safety art project was launched in London at the Global Summit To End Sexual Violence in Conflict.
    .
Its aim is to use art created by children from across the UK and conflict-affected countries to promote messages about what the concept of safety means to different children today.
    .
The initiative will engage 8-15 years olds in the UK and in conflict-affected countries on the issues facing children in war; asking young people to create artwork answering the question ‘What makes you feel safe?’
    .
Stella McCartney will then create an exclusive fashion product inspired by children’s drawings.
    .
Proceeds will go directly to War Child UK helping us to protect children in some of the most dangerous war zones in the world.
    .
Some early entires created by children from War Child programmes in conflict zones were exhibited at the Global Summit where they were reviewed by Ms Jolie, Ms McCartney and Polline Okello, a survivor from Uganda who was abducted aged 12 (right).
    .
This project offers children in the UK the chance to show solidarity with children in conflict-affected countries.
    .

    Good Morning Rose
    .
Yesterday was a bit maniac mu computer kept on crashing stupid thing, need a new one, any way how are you on this beautiful morning, another day another great news about Angie’s achievements, she’s rightly so being praised around the world, can this day get any better for us fans. Christine Amanpours would be interviewing her today cant wait to see that, one thing is Angie is a great interviewee when asked great questions. I’m still intrigued about the Malta trip, one of the guys resembled Angie’s Unbroken cinematographer Roger Deacons, maybe not him. I really don’t know how Brad & Angie find this energy to keep on moving from one thing to another they never keep still do they, no more sloughing on the couch brain freeze for Brad anymore LOL, I love it.
Angie gave another well thought compassionate speech yesterday, pleasantly surprised and nice to see that the Pope, yes the “Pope even Tweeted” his support for this worthy cause, I love the fact the current Pope is open enough to tackle new challenges without making excuses like some of his predecessors I still have my reservations on where they stand on many subjects but I have to give where credit is due. I know there still is a long long long way to go for the catholic churches to accepts their mistakes and make changes within, but they are heading the right directions may it be with baby steps, but steps are taken nonetheless.

Rose what’s funny is ,As if Ticky wasn’t a Troll enough herself ,now you have Squiggys family name dropping Angie’s name for print LOL, see opposite attracts they can spout whatever they like against Angie as if she care’s , mind you she doesn’t even know who these people are let alone even exist so who cares what two a penny journalist says about her . In regards to JLO and Casper saga, I mean how stupid is this guy, he had a good thing going with his sugar mama but he goes spoils it all by chasing transvestites, lets hope she doesn’t hookup with another backing dancer she’s already gone through two this woman sure knows how to pic no name Losers and makes them no name rich when she dumps them.

yesterday The Talk featured Jolie Pitt and Perrin wine. They had good things to say about it. They had a bottle of the Rose wine on the table and they drank and said the wine was very good and the price was reasonable.

    Good Morning ndn
    .

I started my post to you yesterday buy my system had crashed to a day or two later reply should make do LOL. Without sounding fickle and materialistic I loved seeing Angie in white, loved the skirt and top, the fitting of the coat isn’t good but that’s always the case of one buttoned coats they tend to gap from the lapels, but what I loved the most is she understates herself dress wise considering the occasion she’s attending, never makes it about “her” does she.
Thank god Jared has seen some sense and has been able to post a current thread on time at least its on the same day instead of waiting till 3 days are passed, yes he deserves a slow clap for his efforts. You mentioned the Loser & her Trolls going ape over all PSVI & Angie , well here are women/men depending what physicality TamWrong wants to be known as, who is/are still stuck in the past and b.itching non stop 24/7 trying to belittle the occasion with their rants, Instead of opening their eyes and looking around what’s happening in the world and learn about it. But no they are here stuck on a marriage/divorce that was on a breaking point 10 year plus ago, cant seem to move on from that, as if their own life depended upon it. Its not the first divorce/marriage break up of the century nor the last, but they keep harping on and on about it, making it as if its THEIRS they were the ones who got dumped.
Shame all that energy is wasted towards innocent people, so much venomous hatred targeted towards one woman Angelina Jolie, shame they refuse to see hear, read these true stories of these brave young girls and boys, men & women, mothers and fathers , brothers and sisters, who had to endure these atrocious atrocities during their living life, who are living proof they will not be defeated, who are standing up in front of the worlds platform and making their voices heard. They are giving voices to the voiceless, but instead of learning something from these brave individuals Jennifer Aniston fans chose to sully a thread with hatred and vulgarity that’s already taken over their personal life, shame on these Trolls. No matter how much they hate Angie, and let that hatred clouded their judgment towards her, but they can never take away the fact that it will not stop any achievement to come forth from this PSVI Summit by Angelina Jolie. she has the World leaders besides her, she has these victims these brave survivors besides her, encouraging her to take this on, so nothing is going to get in her way, even if its rants from delusional Aniston Hags/Trolls. Trolls want us to feel sorry for a 45 year old pampered woman, who has millions to spare and living a life of luxury, who is still holding a Pity Party while having a fiancée besides her. Once again TamWRONG Jennifer Aniston’s number one fan has showed what type of fans she collects, yes racists, vile, insensitive pieces of scum, which have not an ounce of remorse. yet are gunho in trying to deflect attention away from Rape & genocide .

    .
How are you my dear. So you’re not a “breast girl but a “Thigh’s girl” LOL, Nice to hear that, now I understand the Soccer drooling it all makes sense, but saying that, shame on you Bizzy you have a fit soccer player at home all to “yourself” and still are drooling over others thighs tut tut, don’t be greedy. PS , I’m still stuck at point where you said “think of Brad Troy”, I cant seem to move my brain from there, all I say is Lucky Lucky Angie. I’m glad to hear you were able to see Maleficent wasn’t it a cool movie, I admit I’ve seen it twice, have to make time for third one I know talk about obsessive personality LOL.

Good evening lovely Jolie-Pitt fans, Phool, Busted, Saffron and everyone. Been away for a couple of days and am trying to get caught up reading about the beautiful Angie and her activities. Thank you Phool for all that you do to keep us informed with the latest news. Thanks to Angie too for the articles she posted. I love to hear Angelina speak. She speaks so well and has such presence when she addresses crowds of people. Exciting that she and Brad will be doing a film together. Hope they start filming soon. Haven’t seen Maleficent yet. My daughter can’t come down until June 22nd and I’m afraid it won’t be in the theaters after the 19th. However, my son said he will take me. Sweet boy that he is. Take care everyone and goodnight.
