Colin Firth Exits 'Paddington,' Calls It a 'Conscious Uncoupling'

Colin Firth has dropped out of the upcoming film Paddington and – to use Gwyneth Paltrow‘s famous term – is calling his exit a “conscious uncoupling” after realizing that his voice doesn’t match up with the lovable bear.

“It’s been bittersweet to see this delightful creature take shape and come to the sad realization that he simply doesn’t have my voice,” Colin told Empire Online. “After a period of denial we’ve chosen conscious uncoupling. I’ve had the joy of seeing most of the film and it’s going to be quite wonderful. I still feel rather protective of this bear and I’m pestering them all with suggestions for finding a voice worthy of him.”

Colin Firth has been a joy to collaborate with and I cannot thank him enough for his contribution to Paddington,” director Paul King said. “We love the voice and we love the bear – but as our young bear came into being we agreed that the two didn’t seem to fit. So, with somewhat heavy hearts we decided to part ways. We are excited about the next chapter for Paddington, ensuring his big-screen debut is magnificent.”

Paddington, which stars Nicole Kidman, Sally Hawkins, Hugh Bonneville, and others, will hit theaters on Christmas Day. Watch the first trailer below!

    They should pick Cumberbatch

  • Lea

We want Benedict Cumberbatch!! Great excuse to see this with my child..come om Colin! Make it happen!

  • Sophia

The movie looks great and adorable and I love Colin’s sense of humor. Benedict would be great for this, he could do anything!

  • Candace

Such a shame as I love Colin Firth. To hear him portray the bear with equally fabulous costars Kidman, Hawkins, and Bonneville would have been a delight.

I think Tom Mison or Darren Boyd would be good recasts.

i wish they could have made the bear’s face cuter, he’s kinda fugly

What was Colin Firth’s role supposed to be? Voice over for the bear?

  • Good decision Colin

Firth has used his bear sense of smell and sniffed out a potential flop. Add Nicole Kidman to the mix and Paddington has box office flop written all over it.

@Good decision Colin: You sound like The Crazy One, such a hateful person you are.

I agree Dee, all that this person knows is hate. Love Colin Firth, he would have been great WITH Nicole Kidman.

  • truth

He’s starring with Nicole in 3 other films. His voice was probably too aged for the bear which is a shame but it is what it is.

As well as “The Railway Men,” Firth and Kidman star in the soon-to-be-released “Paddington” and “Before I Go to Sleep.” They’re also working on “Genius.” So, the actor was asked, is Kidman his “work wife” at this point? “That’s not too off base to describe it that way,” he said. “I hope it goes on forever.”

Colin Firth praised Nicole Kidman about what a delight she is to work with and what a wonderful person she is. Sorry, THE CRAZY ONE to pass this heartbreaking news to you.
