King Felipe VI & Queen Letizia of Spain's Coronation Photos!

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia pose with their daughters Princess Leonor and Princess Sofia in front of the Lions Gate at the Congress of Deputies during the King’s official coronation ceremony on Thursday (June 19) in Madrid, Spain.

In a rare move, Felipe‘s father King Juan Carlos abdicated his throne earlier this month after a 39 year reign to hand power over to his son.

“[Felipe has] the maturity, the preparation and the sense of responsibility necessary [to serve and] to lead to a new stage of hope using his experience and the drive of a new generation,” said Juan Carlos, who will still keep his title. He skipped several events in the coronation, “So as to give more prominence to the new King,” Spain’s Royal Palace confirmed.

Felipe and Letizia‘s eight-year-old daughter Leonor is now known as the Princess of Asturias (equal to Prince of Wales) and is next in line for the throne – the youngest in Europe.

    The new queen is a former journalist who has traveled extensively and is from a middle class, educated background, so that can only help, especially as they are raising young girls to serve their country.

    they are better than the trashy swedish ‘royalty’

  • lala

    I’m from Spain so I know quite a lot about all this story. Fisrt of all, when this two got engaged, Spanish people didn’t like her because she was a simple journalist who became to be a newscaster because of his “fiancé”. She was also a divorced woman so in a mainly Catholic country that didn’t feel quite well too. Leaving aside all the imputations of the sister’s new king and his brother-in-law in the case “Noos” and the rumors about the former King being involved too, they new Kings don’t please the people at all! It has been a manifestation a day asking for a referendum so people can choose if we want to continue with monarchy or set up a republic. The politics of the main parties support the monarchy and people have been arrested because of supporting the republic. We couldn’t choose 39 years ago when the dictator Franco put up to Juan Carlos as King of Spain… and we can’t choose now with son… Viva the democracy!

    Her hair looks so nondescript. She’s an old fart whose grandfather was a taxi driver. She comes from a broken home. Her sister commited suicide when she had a little girl to take care of and her other sister is so stuck up that she can’t find a man who stands her. All her family is divorced. She’s not very liked in Spain.

  • cristina

    well said lala

    And Viva la República!!!

  • Emerald

    Queen Letizia of Spain is really one beautiful lady.

  • Emerald

    @Pruden

    Queen Letizia’s grandfather was a taxi driver? Horror of horrors!! And the world has not come to crashing end as a result? Must be something wrong with that. Many people come from broken homes Pruden. Again not the crime of the century. What you should have said is that Queen Letizia’s is not liked by you which, by the way, is really of no importance.

  • lilian

    Thanks for this ur comment @ emerald, I love you.

  • MaIG

    @Emerald:

    I absolutely agree with you Emerald. i am Spanish myself and reading some of the comments from my fellow citizens is quite sad. regardless of liking her or not, I would expect some other reasoning to back it up. How narrowly minded are we still today? being the grand daughter of a taxi.driver and divorced is a disgraceful to us still today? This type of comments just put across why we are prisoners of an old mindset oligarchy with no room of improvement for the average folks. I am particularly not fond of the Royal family, but I know better as to use her background as a weapon. we are officially no.longer a Catholic State, in fact we have not been for a long time now and there should.be room for everyone to live as they please.

  • lilian

    @ pruden you are such a bitch. Foolish hater like u deserves to be locked away.

  • Gina

    @pruden: Ah, you mean she’s a real person who’s experienced real struggle???? Thanks for making me like her even more now.

  • pruden

    Sorry to disturb your left wing theories but as a queen of Spain I would have expected more. I always wanted a republic and I’ll always will.

  • pruden

    @Gina: Ive experienced more struggle than her girl and for some people thats meaningful and for others not. It’s not always related to good people.

  • Emerald

    @pruden

    Obviously there are many in Spain who do not want a Republic. In any case, since I’m not a citizen of that country it really is none of my business if a monarchy exists there or not. And unless you are a citizen of Spain it is also none of your business. As for expecting more from the Queen of Spain; what century are you living in? Certainly not the 21st.

  • pruden

    @Emerald: No, Im living in the 20th century when communists wanted everyone to be equal and everyone was the same ¬¬

  • Gina

    @pruden: What do you know about being a good person?? Right now all I’m seeing is you being a judgemental prude (pun absolutely intended)

  • Emerald

    @pruden

    Are you a citizen of Spain? If not, then what business is it of yours whether Spain has monarchy? By the way this IS the 21ST century.

  • pruden

    @Gina: american history is way different than spanish history as american politics are way different than the spanish ones.

  • Gina

    @pruden: And??? I’m not American or Spanish and I still think your ridiculous.

  • pruden

    @Gina: Take it personally or not, I don’t care. Bye.

  • Gina

    @pruden: Good riddance to bad rubbish.

  • Emerald

    @ Gina

    I think Pruden is afraid to admit that she is not a citizen of Spain and therefore has no say in whether or not Queen Letiza is good at her job or not. In any case, it’s nice she’s left.

  • On a side note

    Did she have plastic surgery on her face?? she looks very different…..

  • Rachael

    @Gina:

    ITA! I’m not American or Spanish either.

  • Rocky

    The little girls are just gorgeous. I love the way their Mom dressed them. Very pretty dresses for two very gorgeous little girls.

  • Sally Smith

    Quite disgusting given something like 48% of Spaniards are unemployed.

  • MaIG

    agree on your point , not so much on the figures. not 1 out of 2 are unemployed in Spain, this ratio applies to the young , not to the whole active population.

  • Mary

    @wickedwitches:
    What’ wrong with Swedish royals??? They are not trashy!!!

  • yaay

    Greece and Spain :D <3

  • Phyllis

    Does it matter, Letizia’s background etc etc, so many people and some with not very nice comments. The fact is that the King, Felipe, loves her, and she loves him. Is Felipe not allowed to marry someone he loves, or does he have to marry someone just for the sake of his country.

    I think Letizia is lovely, she’s growing into a real stateswoman, she loves her children, aren’t they cute, she’s doing a good job, but more importantly she and Felipe are happy. Let’s wish them. Well, may their marriage be a long and happy one, and may they serve Spain well together.

    The time for vitriol is past, let’s leave them to get on with their lives without the constant barrage of insults and criticism. May God bless them and Spain, richly. No I’m not Spanish, but I wish her well as she goes through this time of transition.
