I’m crying, but Loius lived an amazing life. Read Laura’s book if you haven’t to get ready for the film. I was just reading the nice post from Six Years Ago about Brad, Z & Shi visiting Angie when she was on waiting for the twins to be born & thinking how cool it was that she watching the Ken Burns ww2 doc to pass time and now she has directed a ww2 film. Angelina Jolie reacts to passing of ‘Unbroken’ inspiration Louis Zamperini at age 97
    ===========================================================
    .

Louis Zamperini is a hero, no question about it. From Olympian to POW, his story is one for the ages, one laid out on the page beautifully by author Laura Hillenbrand in the book “Unbroken” and adapted by filmmaker Angelina Jolie in a film that will be released later this year. But just six months shy of seeing that life story writ large on the big screen for movie fans the world over to learn about his struggle, Zamperini has passed away, having lived a long and full 97 years.

Here is his family’s statement, conveyed by “Unbroken” distributor Universal Pictures:

“Having overcome insurmountable odds at every turn in his life, Olympic runner and World War II hero Louis Zamperini has never broken down from a challenge. He recently faced the greatest challenge of his life with a life-threatening case of pneumonia. After a 40-day long battle for his life, he peacefully passed away in the presence of his entire family, leaving behind a legacy that has touched so many lives. His indomitable courage and fighting spirit were never more apparent than in these last days.”
    A statement from the studio:

“We are so profoundly sad at this moment and all of our thoughts and prayers are with the Zamperini family. Louis was truly one of a kind. He lived the most remarkable life, not because of the many unbelievable incidents that marked his near century’s worth of years, but because of the spirit with which he faced every one of them. Confronting challenges that would cause most of us to surrender, Louie always persevered and always prevailed, and he spent the better part of his lifetime sharing the message that you could do the same. His example of grace, dignity and resilience inspired all of us lucky enough to know him and the millions who got to know him from the pages of Laura’s book. We move forward to the release of ‘Unbroken’ with a renewed sense of responsibility in bringing Louie’s abundant life and indomitable spirit to the screen. Now more than ever, we join Angelina in honoring the lessons and legacy of this extraordinary man who has meant so much to so many.”
    And from Jolie:

“It is a loss impossible to describe. We are all so grateful for how enriched our lives are for having known him. We will miss him terribly.”
Here at In Contention, we look forward to covering the upcoming film and celebrating his life with Universal, Jolie and actor Jack O’Connell, who was tasked with the gargantuan duty of portraying Zamperini on screen.

R.I.P. Louis Zamperini, Olympian War Hero Is Subject Of Angelina Jolie’s ‘Unbroken’
    ===================================

    .
    By THE DEADLINE TEAM | Thursday July 3, 2014 @ 1:27am
    .
., the World War II hero and former Olympic long distance runner, has died. The subject ofAngelina Jolie‘s upcoming sophomore directorial effort Unbroken, Zamperini was 97. Universal, which announced his passing this morning, had developed theUnbroken project for close to 55 years when it finally got off the ground withJolie signed to direct in December 2012. The script is based on Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience andRedemption, by Seabiscuit author Laura Hillenbrand. Zamperini was a Depression era kid who became a track prodigy and was the youngest member of the U.S. Olympic team that traveled to Berlin for the 1936 games.
    .
He didn’t medal, but was so impressive that Hitler asked to meet him. The 1940 Olympics in Tokyo were cancelled due to the war, and in 1941, Zamperini enlisted in the Air Force. When his plane went down in the Pacific during a rescue mission, Zamperini and two other crew mates survived on a raft in the hot sun for 47 days. They were ultimately caught by the Japanese Navy, beginning a terrifying term of captivity that lasted until the end of the war in 1945.

    .
Universal first bought Zamperini’s rights back in the 1950s. As Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr has written, “Few movies gestate as long as this one, but it’s clear from Hillenbrand’s remarkable book that it was wise to wait. Zamperini had a lot of work to do to make himself whole again after enduring an ordeal that would break even the strongest of men.” Universal screened very impressive footage ofUnbroken at Cine Europe in Barcelona two weeks ago, and at CinemaCon in March. The movie stars Jack O’Connell as the younger Zamperini along with Jai Courtney, Garrett Hedlund and Domhnall Gleeson. It’s due for release on December 25 this year. Shortly after that, Zamperini was to be the Grand Marshall at the 2015 Rose Parade in January.
    .
A statement from Universal Pictures said, “We are so profoundly sad at this moment and all of our thoughts and prayers are with the Zamperini family. Louis was truly one of a kind. He lived the most remarkable life, not because of the many unbelievable incidents that marked his near century’s worth of years, but because of the spirit with which he faced every one of them.

He seemed like an amazing person. I hope he got to see some of his movie. So sad. Wishing his family and Angie well. I thought she looked a little sad in the dinner pic and it appears he was very ill then. So glad the book is out in paperback and his movie comes out this year.

@Susan: Good morning Susan. I was just scanning JJ and saw GC and his fiancee. Girl, his fans are not happy with his choice and to be honest, I don’t care one way or the other because I’m not a GC fan. However, you know when Angie nd Brad are together, he’s always leading the way and holding Angies hand, none of that connection is seen with GC and AA. anyway, I wish them well. It appears the wedding will be soon.

@Phool.: Good morning my dear friend. Thank you for the article about Brad and Angelina’s up coming movie which will be filmed in Malta. So it official. I like that the Prime Minister is calling it a block buster. Angle say it’s a little film. I guess the PM is excited because of the notoriety the movie will bring to Malta. I hope it’s a love story, because they have so much chemistry together. Both of them doing a love story would burn up the screen.

Phool, did you see that video on page 65, #1602, on the last thread Love the Jolie Pitts Left for the fans last night, the video with Angie wearing the yellow dress in China. You have to watch it. Angle was very forty coming. She mentioned Marian Perl Continues to be one of her closest friend. She said she is very, very lucky and blessed with a supportive man in her life. She said her family is her love, her children and brad are her happiness. She went on to say she know that it’s rear to have a very supportive man and she knows she is blessed. I liked that video
was so forthcoming, one I’m sure you will save.

To all the fans leaving links, videos and articles, thank you all very much. And thank you Phool, you are there for the fans every day. Thank you.

I salute you Louis Zameprini may you rest in peace amongst your fellow angles God bless. I know seeing his age this was inevitable , but sometimes for selfish reasons we don’t want to think that far ahead do we, we always want them to be here for us regardless of the inevitability of the cycle of life.
My dears Love, Rose , Louis has had such a blessing in so many peoples lives and was/Is held a hero till the very end I know Angie will do his story justice to Unbroken, Brad & her we’re blessed to have this beautiful gentleman Louis in their lives may it be for a little while but he has left a major impact .

LOL, “ Its Only the Prime Minister of Malta” Rose ( I bet even hearing that the trolls are screaming in the ocean), you know the PM cant contain his excitement of the arrival of Sir Brad & Dame Angelina and knowing the amount of free publicity its bringing kerching big time for Malta tourism Brad & Angie’s new project is bringing to his country Ker F*ucking Ching , and I thought the troll said everyone hated Brad & Angie , well I guess NOT. You know Rose when Brad & Angie themselves say something they will DO they DO IT, no dithering they just get on with it.
Yes I’ve seen the Japanese video that you have mentioned, that’s the video that sparked the “Marriane Pearl friend or no friend debate amongst the trolls” LOL. I loved seeing Angie in yellow it pops out her beauty further more as if that humanly possible . You know Rose what’s sad about todays news about Louis’s passing is that not only a couple a weeks a ago Aniston Troll tampon was wishing Louis death and mocking him, I guess she has got her sick wish, sad we live amongst human trash like Tampon’s and their hatred towards innocent people, at least Louis was and is forever will be a hero and a decent human being in our memories , the question is no one is going to remember the trolls and their vulgarity are they , yes their choice to live their life in a gutter they will be of no loss to any one , we only will say good riddance.

@Phool.: Hi Phool, we have to be glad we were privilege to know about LZ’s amazing life and because of Angie we will get to see a part of his life being played out on screen. if I’m not mistaken, Angie did say LZ saw some of the footage of the movie and liked it. We have to remember living to be 97 is such gift that so many people never get to experience. I’m sure Angie was with him at a time before he passed over. According to the write up he was I’ll for 40 days. I would like to believe he was ready to go. I remember before my dad passed over, he was not that old, but he told the family he was tired and ready to go. He passed quietly and peacefully. It was sad but it was for the best. God be with him.

    Good Morning Passing Through
    .
Would you know when the 2nd part of the Louis/Angie /Unbroken interview with NBC’s Tom Brokaw would be broadcasted? .I do hope they were able to interview him at the same time they did the first slot, and just had cut it in half for broadcasting purposes and not left it for another days interviewing schedule, which I very much doubt if they’d done that. But I’m still glad he was given a world audience with this, in regards to Unbroken.

@Susan: I have to say, something is off with GC and AA, why the big rush. For over 20 years, I believe, GC swore he would never marry and now the big rush. I’m saying she’s having a baby, I’m joking.

Btw, I like to read the Blind Gossip, not believing 99% of what they are selling, but sometimes they hit one. Yesterday they have a solved item about Bradley Cooper being either gay or bi. , btw, they say Lainey outed him. But the funny thing was he is using drugs and he’s looking sweaty. I remember last year making a comment about seeing him dancing and he was drenched in sweat from his and his closed were soaked. I know that some people perspires a lot when they use drugs, not saying he is or not, but I know that us true working with drug addicts and mentally I’ll. If that’s true about the blind, suki is a beard, lol. Let’s see if the trolls are going to talk about BC, I don’t think do, only the Jolie they are interested in.

    .

I know he’s already seen the footage of Unbroken as he and his family have/had been kept into the loop throughout the whole shooting , also his interview with Tom Brokaw he would have seen the footage then too. I’m so glad he was there at the Governors Awards when Angie got her Humanitarian Oscar, and he was seated at their table as their guest of honour and saw the love and respect people had for him & his presence. I know Angie, Brad and their kids will cherish those beautiful moments they had with him, what a privilege it was for them to be in his presence talk to him hear him, after all Louis did challenge Brad over a duel over his girl Angie LOL he was such a jovial spirit wasn’t he Rose.#
I know Universal, Angie & Jack O’Connell will do his memory proud with Unbroken and people will go out and see this movie in his honour. Where I was rooting for the grand success of this movie 100% know it’s gone up to an thousand percent, I hope Universal gives it the great push that it deserves, in the memory of the great man himself.
I didn’t realise he was ill because wasn’t it only a week or so ago he was the grand marshal? Considering his age he was a in a fragile state despite his fighting spirit, he was a fighter till the very end. Our Louis.
PS I love this Photo of Louis & Angie and I bet it’s taken a pride of place at their houses.

    Louis Zamperini > Quotes

“Someone who doesn’t make the (Olympic) team might weep and collapse. In my day no one fell on the track and cried like a baby. We lost gracefully. And when someone won, he didn’t act like he’d just become king of the world, either. Athletes in my day were simply humble in our victory.
I believe we were more mature then…Maybe it’s because the media puts so much pressure on athletes; maybe it’s also the money. In my day we competed for the love of the sport…In my day we patted the guy who beat us on the back, wished him well, and that was it.”
    .

“The one who forgives never brings up the past to that person’s face. When you forgive, it’s like it never happened. True forgiveness is complete and total.”
    .

“All I want to tell young people is that you’re not going to be anything in life unless you learn to commit to a goal. You have to reach deep within yourself to see if you are willing to make the sacrifices.”
    .

“I think the hardest thing in life is to forgive. Hate is self destructive. If you hate somebody, you’re not hurting the person you hate, you’re hurting yourself. It’s a healing, actually, it’s a real healing…forgiveness.”

    .
“Yet a part of you still believes you can fight and survive no matter what your mind knows. It’s not so strange. Where there’s still life, there’s still hope. What happens is up to God.”

    .
“God knew my needs and took care accordingly.”
    .

“The great commandment is that we preach the gospel to every creature, but neither God nor the Bible says anything about forcing it down people’s throats.”
    .

“I was raised to face any challenge.”
    .

“The world, we’d discovered, doesn’t love you like your family loves you.”
    .

“(after asking Christ into his heart) I waited. And then, true to His promise, He came into my heart and my life. The moment was more than remarkable; it was the most realistic experience I’d ever had. I’m not sure what I expected; perhaps my life or my sins or a great white light would flash before my eyes; perhaps I’d feel a shock like being hit by a bolt of lightning. Instead, I felt no tremendous sensation, just a weightlessness and an enveloping calm that let me know that Christ had come into my heart.”

    .
“To live, a man needs food, water, and a sharp mind.”
    .

“I’d made it this far and refused to give up because all my life I had always finished the race.”
    .
“It was all in His hands now – as it had always been.”

    .
“The Bible speaks of the Word of God as added. Sometimes it’s planted by the wayside, and nothing grows there. Sometimes it’s sown among the thorns and represents the person who makes the decision an then goes back to his old life of bars and chasing women or whatever. A third seed is sown among the rocks. There’s sand and dirt between the rocks, and when it rains you’ll see a stalk of green coming up. But on the first day with sunshine it wilts because there is no room for roots.
The fourth seed is planted on fertile soil, and finally it takes hold and has a chance to grow and live. That’s what happened to me.”
    .

“The race film had confirmed a dead heat. That was great. But even better, most of the New York press finally learned to spell my name correctly.”

    .
“(On surviving on the raft for 47 days) We had truly made it on a wing and prayer.”
    .

“All I knew was that hate was so deadly as any poison and did no one any good. You had to control and eliminate it, if you could.”

After a 40-day long battle for his life, he peacefully passed away in the presence of his entire family, leaving behind a legacy that has touched so many lives. His indomitable courage and fighting spirit were never more apparent than in these last days.”
    .
In 1998, Zamperini ran a leg in the Olympic Torch relay for the Winter Olympics in Japan, where he had been a prisoner of war during World War II. In 2011, he received honorary degrees for Doctor of Humane Letters from both Azusa Pacific University and Bryant University. That same year, he received the Kappa Sigma Golden Heart Award. Zamperini was scheduled to be the grand marshal of the 2015 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California.
    .
Hillenbrand’s book, “Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption,” was a 2010 biography of Zamperini’s extraordinary life. It was a #1 New York Times bestseller, as well as being named Time Magazine’s best nonfiction book of the year.
    .
Joel and Ethan Coen adapated Hillenbrand’s book into a feature film, with Richard LaGravenese and William Nicholson, with Angelina Jolie attached as director. ”It is a loss impossible to describe,” Jolie said in a statement. “We are all so grateful for how enriched our lives are for having known him. We will miss him terribly.”
    .
Zamperini grew up in Olean, New York, where he ran track at Torrance High School. He set a record for the mile in 1934 on his way to a scholarship to the University of Southern California. Torrance High School named its football, soccer and track stadium after Zamperini, and in 2004, USC named the entrance plaza at its track & field stadium for him as well.
    .
At 19, Zamperini became the youngest-ever American Olympic qualifier for for the 5,000 meters. He placed eighth in the event at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany, but his final lap of 56 seconds earned him the notice of Adolf Hitler, as well as a one-on-one meeting.
    .
In 1941, Zamperini enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces and survived a plane crash in the Pacific theater, spending 74 days on a raft before finally reaching land, where he and his fellow survivor were immediately captured by the Japanese Navy. He spent the next two and a half years as an unofficial prisoner of war, while he was declared killed in action by the United States.
    .
Zamperini wrote two different memoirs about his experiences before Hillenbrand’s biography. Both were called “Devil at My Heels,” but the 2003 edition was much expanded from the original, which was published in 1956.
    .
“He lived the most remarkable life, not because of the many unbelievable incidents that marked his near century’s worth of years, but because of the spirit with which he faced every one of them,” Universal Pictures said in a statement.
    .
“Confronting challenges that would cause most of us to surrender, Louie always persevered and always prevailed, and he spent the better part of his lifetime sharing the message that you could do the same. His example of grace, dignity and resilience inspired all of us lucky enough to know him and the millions who got to know him from the pages of Laura’s book.
    .
“We move forward to the release of “Unbroken” with a renewed sense of responsibility in bringing Louie’s abundant life and indomitable spirit to the screen. Now more than ever, we join Angelina in honoring the lessons and legacy of this extraordinary man who has meant so much to so many.”
    .
Jack O’Connell portrays Zamperini in the Legendary Pictures film, “Unbroken,” which Universal Pictures will release to theaters on Christmas Day 2014.

@Phool.: We are fans nd we know that Brad nd Angie don’t make idle predictions, they walk the walk and talk the talk. Remember Brad telling Jerry P, Extra, that he would be happy to have Angie Direct him. Well not we are seeing the beginning of that collaboration.

Phool, o you remember yesterday morning this troll came over to make her production about Brad nd Angie having a movie to be made.

Troll: Noway – “there is no movie. No way she is filming another movie before Unbroken is finished. Word is the movie is not finished yet…”

My reply to Noway: “where did you get your information that Unbroken is not finished yet? Is that wishful thinking…”

Phool, the trolls are always wrong, yet they keep coming just to get shut down and they are never embarrassed.

Phool, if that pos tamshitt will wish death on a mother and her children, I’m sure it has wished death on it’s mother for having a no good son of a B like that. Tamshitt is not human with human feelings, it’s psycho. Phool, may LZ rest in peace and I’m sure he is in a better place.

@Phool.: I know Angie loved Lou deeply, you can see it in how she took him in as her family, kisses him, snuggled with him. She learned so many life lessons from him and the power of forgiveness. Lou Z received a well deserved standing Ovation at the humanitarian Award dinner for Angie’s Oscar. Phool, lol, what did Brad replied to LZ when he challenged Brad to a duel for Angie? I forget.

Phool, you mentioned the photo of LZ and Ngie, what a beautiful photo. I remember reading someone saying going into Brad and Wngelinas house was like going in a art museum. I sure LZ is one of their prize possession.
