Kirsten Dunst Talks Transitioning from Child Star to Adult Actor

Kirsten Dunst poses for a new spread in Flaunt magazine‘s latest issue.

Here is what the 32-year-old Two Faces in January actress had to share with the mag:

On starting out as a child star: “That transition [from a child actor] doesn’t happen to many of us. When it does, I think that you’re really meant to be doing this. A lot of people stop or it’s too hard to transition. But people don’t want to see you as an adult. I’m 32 now—that transition was done for me with [Sofia Coppola’s] The Virgin Suicides. That movie helped me go from a little girl to ‘growing up.’”

On making movies with Lars Von Trier: “Lars makes movies about complicated and dark women—the more interesting aspects of femininity, and the relationships between women and sexuality. You don’t really have that experience with anyone else but him. And I love that everyone says that he’s a tyrant or he puts women through miserable things. He’s the only one giving us an opportunity to be crazy and do things that are real but nobody writes about.”

On roles for women: “There are great female roles out there [but] there’s only so much out there for all of us. Everyone has to audition when it comes to certain parts, and women have to the most. I still think it’s a boys’ club in a lot of ways. And to be a strong female in this industry, you have to be really in touch with your masculine side, too. You have to be a pretty strong lady to survive it. You have to be very confident in yourself.

Love her, still my fave after all these years!

  • offtheproperty

Still going through head trips about her great good fortune in life.
You make the movies; we’ll make the judgements.

I love Photo #1. Great shot!

  • CarrieFromBelgium

I agree on all she says here

  • Solid

She’s an excellent actress – just saw On the Road (what a vapid book and film) and she and Garrett and Viggo were excellent in it. She – a winner at Cannes – is much better than Oscar winners such as Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.

  • meh

she was a much better and more captivating actress as a young girl, like her heart was into it more than it is now and she was much more relatable to many girls back when she was a teenager. now she’s just fighting to have a good adult role which she hasn’t had since melancholia. her boyfriend is becoming a better actor than she has (just did a fantastic, moving performance in Lullaby) and is getting more work than her and is more currently in-demand than her when her heyday was late 90′s early 2000′s and i think she will be hurting deep down inside if garrett’s career fares better in the long run than hers as her position of being an adult actress now. i think she believes she deserves the oscar before he gets recognized by the academy but i think him being ligned up for multiple leading man roles in very big movies at the moment (being casted in Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken and going to be Captain Hook in the new Peter Pan film) is bugging her. Bachelorette was not a good film either so she really needs to step up her game so she won’t fade into the background.

Meh, you sure seem to spend a lot of time in Kirsten Dunst’s mind! Sheesh, if you knew half of what you’d like others to think you do, you’d at least know that the term is “cast”, not “casted”.
Stop trying to create competition drama. She has career struggles, like many 32-year-olds, in Hollywood or elsewhere in life. Regardless of what her boyfriend does or doesn’t do, she is right, her career is difficult and to have made the transition, she has the talent. Now she needs the role, but they are few and far between and there are a lot of talented actresses her age.

She’s spot on. Offtheproperty, too bad you think she doesn’t deserve to have opinions and thoughts about her own career. I hope you don’t treat the people in your life in the same way you seem to think of people of you don’t know.

I’d be interested to find out what she really means by “doing this.”
No, I don’t mean her easy explanation dodge — being an actress, acting as a career or craft, or acting as a lifelong journey.
I mean what she really means.

  • offtheproperty

I think she’s the prettiest girl in show business.

Yeh good looks, and embracing !
