Kesha Opens Up About Rehab Stint: 'I Was Hateful to Myself & Hurting My Body' - Read Her Touching Essay Here!

Kesha is opening up about her two-month stint in rehab and the pressures she faces as a female pop star in the music industry in a poignant essay written for Elle UK magazine’s July 2014 issue.

Here’s some excerpts from the 27-year-old entertainer’s essay:

“The music industry has set unrealistic expectations for what a body is supposed to look like, and I started becoming overly critical of my own body because of that. I felt like people were always lurking, trying to take pictures of me with the intention of putting them up online or printing them in magazines and making me look terrible.”

“I felt like a liar, telling people to love themselves as they are, while I was being hateful to myself and really hurting my body. I wanted to control things that weren’t in my power, but I was controlling the wrong things. I convinced myself that being sick, being skinny was part of my job. It felt safer somehow.”

@haa:
You must be very arrogant and simple person….

What she’s saying is so true of the industry and how many stars feel. I’m so glad she got the help she needed. She wouldn’t have been able to carry a happy and healthy life, let alone a career that demands tons of energy and travel. She’s a strong woman.

@Sage: It’s also true in general. Most people who suffer from eating disorders aren’t famous. They affect the rich and poor and everyone in between. EDs are caused by genetics. A comment about weight that wouldn’t bother most people can be devastating to someone with a genetic disposition toward eating disorders. It can set off a potentially deadly series of destructive behaviors. Kesha has a song called Love Into the Light where she says hateful words “cut like a knife, kill like a dagger.” For people with mental disorders like anorexia and bulimia, words can be extremely damaging.

All females face these issues, but don’t have people taking pictures all the time. Fame comes at a price, but I’m guessing she will pay the price to keep her millions. She looks great.

@Amy: Well, she wouldn’t lose her money if she decided to retire. And considering how stingy she is her $7 million in wealth is more than enough to live off of. She’s so ambitious though I don’t see her giving up her career. And now she’s in a situation where she can make the music she wants to make (pop rock, rock and country) rather than being forced to make dance music by Dr. Luke. As long as she regularly gets therapy she may be able to deal with the downsides of fame without it worsening her mental condition again.

I have a lot of sympathy for her, I sincerely hope she has a healthy and successful recovery.

At the same time I hope she will come to realize that she has a choice in the matter regarding her image and how she dresses, if she chooses to emphasize her body or if she chooses to emphasize the music. Look at Adele, look at Lorde. These girls are in the same business but because their image is not as much focused on their body, they are not as criticized for their body and can still be successful. So she needs to think about how she portrays herself. If she dresses provocatively and makes her image about her body then people will focus on that instead of her music and her ideals.
