Sheryl Crow on Dating Famous Men: 'One Of You Becomes Smaller - And It Was Always Me'

Sheryl Crow stands out in hot pink on the cover of Good Housekeeping‘s August 2014 cover.

Here’s what the 52-year-old entertainer had to share with the mag:

On her past relationships with famous men: “I had always gone out with guys who were highly successful, which would seem like it would put me at an equal level. But what ends up happening is that one of you becomes smaller — and it was always me. It’s always the woman. I mean, I don’t know if it’s always the woman, but I do think that sometimes in order for one person’s light to shine, everyone else has to dim theirs.”

On wanting marriage: “I would love to get married — I’m still old-fashioned. But I don’t think marriage is the be-all and end-all. It’s better to have three broken engagements than three divorces.”

On the music industry today: “It’s hard to be a woman in music today. There’s so much sex that’s projected, and that’s a bummer. These singers talk about how empowering it is, but a good musician who can command the stage doesn’t have to rely on sex to sell her music.”

    I disagree. One example, Brad and Angelina both still shine equally. Neither of them are dimmed

    @realist:

    Exactly! The only reason most can’t equally shine is because both are trying to be the bigger Star and that is where the problem lies. If ones out shines the other then the relationship is doomed, that is how it usually is in HW. It’s all ego more than anything and it sounds like that is why Sheryl is no longer in any relationship. She can’t handle her significant other to be more relevant when her level of relevancy has died down. It happens in normal relationships as well.

    I agree with her on this statement and it is a sad state of music today. So much talent gets ignored for the oversexed puppet show.

    @ #1 She’s right if it’s not a relationship that will last. When she finds the right guy it won’t matter. Lance Armstrong is a pathological liar and hypocrite. Owen Wilson needs to grow up and will probably never settle down. I don’t know who else Sheryl has dated but clearly those two aren’t great longterm relationship / marriage material.

    She’s right although it doesn’t help that she usually dates jerks. I know someone else mentioned Angelina and Brad but it’s rare that there is a celebrity couple where both couples are allowed to be stars on equal footing. Brangelina are a rare case and their relationship and family are a large part of their brand too.

    Hard for you to face the truth. They really are 2 of the biggest STars in the world. deny all you want. Successful together and separate.

    Sherly needs to just find a man that is secure in himself. They are out there. She maybe looking at the wrong outside package.

    @xyzc: they’re basically the King and Queen of Hollywood and nobody comes anywhere close to them as a power couple (I’m not gonna include jay-z and beyonce because there is definitely problems with that couple that they don’t want to show publicly). But I have to agree with Sheryl on the sex sells music industry quote, there’s way more originality by finding other ways to create staying power in the industry, it’s the execs that are making the artists turn trashy by force to promote a bad agenda. If they don’t dress skimpy, the big labels will most likely drop them, plain and simple. Sheryl should be glad that her heyday was in a different time period. It’s clearly difficult to find somebody in the entertainment industry that wants to be on the same page as you, somebody that truly respects her wouldn’t let their ego be in the way but that’s a rarity with men in Hollywood.

    @realist: she’s right.
    Brangelina and the Beckhams are the exception because they’re a brand before all and they understood they were more famous together than alone.

    CarrieFromBelgium Says:

    Jay Z and Beyonce are another brand

    ummm Says:

    @CarrieFromBelgium:

    Actually, I think it boils down to these two couples just finding the right person to share their lives with. Brad & Angelina were both famous prior to coming together and even before coming together fame was not the forefront of their being and the same for Beckham & Victoria, JayZ & Beyonce. I do feel the later have a bit of a business interest with their relationship but the first two seem to have accepted each others claim to fame and decided family is first and business is secondary. There is no power struggle of who is the bigger this or who won more of this going on with these couples. JMO

    She commands respect by showcasing her talent and not her looks or body. I guess the sex aspect is empowering for entertainers who aren’t very talented. It’s a shame, really, that women stoop to such trashy levels but money makes you do things.
