Ben McKenzie on his 'Gotham' Character: No Single Man Can Overcome his Challenges!

Ben McKenzie has a laugh onstage at the Gotham panel during the 2014 Television Critics Association on Sunday afternoon (July 20) in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The 35-year-old actor was joined by co-stars Jada Pinkett Smith and Donal Logue for the panel.

“It’s noir,” Ben said when about the atmosphere of the show, according to the LA Times. “The structure that exists around [Gordon] is so daunting and challenging that no single man can overcome it.”

“I think oftentimes what drives a woman in all our stories is very different than what we’re used to seeing,” Jada said about her character Fish Mooney. “It’s unlike anything I’ve done before.”

Great to see Ben enjoying promoting this. Really looking forward to seeing him on TV weekly and in as the lead.

It sounds like Ben McKenzie is excited about the show and taking on the new role. He’d sell me on any character, so I hope that the writing and stories are quality too. It will be great to have Ben back in prime time again.

I just watched Jada today in the Nutty Professor….ghetto, sorry, just ghetto even when she was trying to play a professor and doctoral candidate

She looks amazing, her problem is she knows it all too well.

  • my two cents

Ben has been blessed with such good job opportunities since the O.C. proud to see him grow into such a great actor. I think i’m going to check this show out…seems interesting enough.

Agree with the comment here. Ben seems to be really having a good time promoting this.
I hope this is a big success.

    @my two cents:

I think he’s made some very smart and diverse choices to try his hand at challenging roles on TV, stage and in films. Good for him for not going for the easy money and something he could phone in. If anyone could get me to watch a show about Gotham and another show with some kind of stories about the criminal world, it would be him! It sounds like he’s really enjoying this and is excited about his character. Great signs!

I just saw more of the new media from the TCA, including Ben interviewing the show’s creators and producers for Access Hollywood, which was fun, has good info, and is definitely worth a look. I also saw more in-depth comments about what’s behind the story, with Ben talking about characterization and Greek tragedy. Very cool to have educated and intelligent insights, which isn’t what usually comes from most promo events that turn into self-promotion instead.

The more I hear, the more I’m looking forward to it, not that I’d miss a chance to see Ben in any role.

Thanks for the heads up. I’ll have to check that interview out. Turning the tables is a good twist and I’d rather hear Ben McK’s questions than a regular correspondent’s. And imagine an actor articulate without any script and starting an intelligent discussion. Ben’s always good at the promoting and the panel format, especially if he’s asked good questions or gets to a chance to run with the ball a little.

Looking forward to seeing him on screen again this fall!

I just saw the interview within an interview too, @jjtor24. Thanks for the info. The 3 of them have a great rapport and get along very well. Nice spin on the usual with Ben taking the mike to ask the questions first. I like how the producers talk about how important it was to have someone who’s really like Gordon, someone smart, educated and who has genuine values and strong integrity. They made a good point about acting only going so far and not being able to fake those traits, especially on TV week after week, so a great compliment to Ben McKenzie as the real deal. I’m eager to see what Ben will will do with this.

Going to look for Ben McKenzie as the Access Hollywood interviewer. I never thought that I’d have any interest in a Gotham show, but I never would have watched a Southland type either. Bring it on, Ben!
