Patrick Dempsey Won't Give Up a Racing Season Unless He Finds an Acting Role That's Worthwhile

Patrick Dempsey holds hands with his wife Jill as they tour the Infiniti Red Bull Racing garage before the 2014 German Grand Prix held at Hockenheimring on Sunday (July 20) in Hockenheim, Germany.

The 48-year-old actor recently opened up about feeling the need to keep racing and keep acting.

“I think it’s important for me to do both (acting and racing),” Patrick recently said. “I don’t dislike acting. There’s just certain challenges I’d like to have in my acting profession and I haven’t found those roles that have really made it worthwhile for me to give up a racing season to go do.”

This is the guy who did Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon. This shows he’s not picky about movie projects.

Ouch. :( Stab in the heart to Greys fans who love him as Derek Shepherd. I’m glad he enjoys racing, but he might need to stop making comments like this.

@aquarius64: @Corinna: I think both of you read into his comments wrong. If an actor only does movies because it will boost his cred in the industry, that means he’s not acting because he generally just loves it. If he did Transformers he probably thought it was fun, not that it would take his career further. As for Corinna, Grey’s doesn’t interfere with his racing so he has no need to give up racing. I think he meant if a role that interferes with his racing…it has to be good for him to give up racing. Don’t take everything so personal. He wasn’t dissing Grey’s.

@Jen: Well, this is just after a long line of comments saying racing is more important to him than Greys in about the past year. Which is fine, everyone deserves to follow what interests them, but his job at Greys is a wonderful one – so even if it’s not his favorite thing to do I’d rather he at least not ever put it down in a way. It’s been a joy to watch him deliver some great performances on the show, and it’s disheartening to feel maybe it doesn’t mean as much to him. Ask any actor in Hollywood – they’d give anything for such a gig. My worry is – when his racing schedule becomes more full, will Greys be the sacrifice? Will give anything for him to see the show through to the end.

@Corinna: I’m sorry but…what exactly does he owe you? If his racing schedule becomes more full and he decides to give up Grey’s for it, he has every right to do so. He’s committed 12 years to the show and it’s his life and his career. Yes, it’s been a wonderful show (at times…) and it’s really relaunched his career but it’s his life at the end of the day. I’ve also never heard him put down Grey’s, he always talks about how grateful he is for the job and how lucky he is…admitting that he’s more passionate about racing right now isn’t an insult, it’s just his truth. I don’t understand how you can possibly hold that against him.

Love him !!!

@Corinna: exactly it kinda hurts not gonna lie I’m a huge fan of his (the whole cast & crew) of Grey’s anatomy but he needs to stop saying stuff like that we all get he loves racing Shonda the producer is very good at navigating schedules for his racing career so he needs to stop slamming Grey’s and say he likes them equally!
