'Lucy' Beats Out 'Hercules' at the Weekend Box Office!

Scarlett Johansson‘s Lucy opened to a whopping $44 million this weekend, topping the box office!

According to THR, the film is the latest female-led movie to perform really well at the summer box office, after Maleficent and The Fault in Our Stars.

Coming in at No. 2 was Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson‘s epic film Hercules, which took in $29 million for its first weekend.

Taking the third spot was Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, starring Andy Serkis, Keri Russell, and more, which brought in an additional $16.4 million, for a domestic total of $172.1 million so far.

Rounding out the top five were the horror flick The Purge: Anarchy and the animated sequel Planes: Fire & Rescue, bringing in $9.9 million and $9.3 million, respectively.

Meanwhile, at the specialty box office, the spy thriller A Most Wanted Man, starring the late Philip Seymour Hoffman opposite Rachel McAdams, opened to an impressive $2.7 million in only 361 theaters.

Woody Allen‘s Magic in the Moonlight, starring Colin Firth and Emma Stone, opened to a decent $425,730 from 17 theaters for a location average of $25,043.

Lucy was a bad movie and a waste of money!

  • Pepperona

Regardless of what you thought of the film, this is pretty good news for actresses in Hollywood. Obviously it gives Scarlett credibility in carrying a film on her own.

  • Caryn

@Pepperona: That may be, but it was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a lot.

  • Mary

Kids dragged me to Hercules and it was way better than I thought it would be – pretty much nonstop action. Not a great movie, but fine for a hot afternoon.

  • Violet

The chatter about Lucy has not been good, with most saying stay away. That being said, Hercules should have done a lot better and it won’t have a chance to make up ground. Next week Guardians of the Galaxy opens then TMNT and The Giver open the weeks after.

That 10% brain capacity thing is a myth…we use all parts of our brain but that doesn’t mean we can’t increase our IQ and other skills with training

  • A lurker

No matter what people say that Lucy was a crap movie, it does not make a diffrence, you paid into IT becoming a box office hit LOL, whose the winner now, no point in whining.

  • lol

@A lurker: No point in gloating, it doesn’t change the fact that she is a way below par actress. She is a one hit wonder this week with no competition and will fall off the map next week. Hercules was an entertaining movie.

  • Lara

@Ben: Ignorant. Go read a book.

I always enjoy the painting ‘Some (tea) for Lucy’. A little girl outside a corner store giving her dolly in a pram some tea.
Also ‘break in play’ – D’arcy Doyle.

Ill Amit it was different not so much in a bad way. I liked
Scarlet’s performance she was kick ass. I think it did
So well because we are all so starved for strong female
Characters. It just proves we need more of them. That
They can bring in the big bucks. Either way I don’t regret
    Seeing it it.
