Chris Pratt to 'Esquire': I Didn't Picture Myself Getting 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Role

Chris Pratt looks so good in a suit on the cover of Esquire magazine’s September 2014 issue, on newsstands August 12.

Here’s what the 35-year-old Guardians of the Galaxy actor had to share with the mag:

On his Guardians audition: “When Guardians of the Galaxy was pitched to me, I said,’I don’t think so.’ I just didn’t picture myself getting the role. I didn’t want to go and embarrass myself like I did when I auditioned for G.I. Joe a couple of years previously. I went in there, and halfway through I saw the director’s eyes just glaze over. It made sense—I was a little heavy and out of shape. I was not gonna play someone from G.I. Joe. I did not look like a G.I. Joe action figure come to life.”

On coming up with jokes: “I’ve always pretended to improv. Sneaking in a joke like I’ve stumbled on it, coming up with good comebacks for things that haven’t even happened. My whole life I’ve done that.”

FYI: Chris is wearing a Burberry London suit.

i honestly think that every marvel actors are overrated. Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, him and most of all Robert Downey Jr, I think they will not have long run the the film industry, when the series are done, so they are! enjoy while it lasts, and i also think that Marvel is overdoing the Superhero thing, i remember back in days when i got excited about a superhero movie, but today its very commen and people will get tired of it pretty soon.

I know Hollywood is desperate for Chris Pratt to be the next big star, but I’m not sure he’ll have a big fanbase outside of the comic book movies he does. Plus, Esquire UK has a far superior cover this month js.

I agree with most of that except I think Robert Downey was amazing as Iron Man. I think Chris Pratt won’t blow up any more than they all have, they have their superhero thing and that’s about it.

Chris Pratt maybe the only one in that group to have the staying power. He can do comedy, drama and superhero stuff. These other guys try and do other stuff but they seem very stiff and RDJ is always playing himself. The wisecracking guy in the room. Which is why he did not get the part in Gravity with Sandra Bullock.

@Lulu: I think he has staying power. He’s a good character and comedic actor too and the industry, co-workers and general audience really like him. He seems like a great guy too.

I’m getting really tired of the whole comic book thing, but I think he’s adorable, and brings more to the table than some of the other superhero actors…I mean, have you ever seen Chris Hemsworth or Chris Evans do comedy?

@Lulu: he has a big following from parks and recreation so you’re wrong there. hes a great talent, all he really needed to do was weight train his a$$ off and bam, look at him now. i wonder if hes gonna gain his weight back for parks, him being fit would be an interesting story line for the show to use lol.
