Alexander Ludwig Interview – JustJared.com Exclusive

Just Jared: What drew you to When The Game Stands Tall as a projet?

Alexander Ludwig: I love that it was just not your average, every day sports film. It starts with them losing their big championship, or them winning the big championship game, and then lose. It’s kind of a comeback story. What the coaches did was just exceptional.

JJ: What’s it like playing real football as opposed to playing it for a film?

AL: That’s a great question because I’ve never played real football. (laughs) It’s so funny because I’ve played almost every sport except for football because I lived in Vancouver, Canada, and I came to New Orleans and didn’t know how to play at all. So I had to learn very quickly.

JJ: Do you have a favorite prop from set?

AL: I’d say the football. Just because we get to throw it around with all the boys.

JJ: What was your favorite scene to film?

AL: Definitely the ending scene. There was so much energy on set because we also filmed that at the end of the movie. So we had gotten through this time all together and made a great movie.

JJ: What was it like working with Matthew Daddario?

AL: Amazing, love the guy. The whole team, we all became best friends. We’ve been brothers ever since. We always used to go out and watch a lot of music and stuff together. One night, we all went and watched this great rap band play, and got up on stage with all of them. It was great.

JJ: Onto Vikings… What’s your favorite thing to do where you shoot, in Ireland?

AL: Go see live music. I love live music. And I want to go surfing, but I haven’t been able to do that yet.

JJ: Do you have a favorite prop from the Vikings set?

AL: Yeah, my arm ring. It’s a ring you get given to show your loyalty to whoever you’re fighting for. And I gave one to my brother and one to my best friend.

JJ: What’s been your favorite off screen moment?

AL: Recently, my friend and I, we went to Iceland together. He plays Floki in the show, Gustaf Skarsgard. We went white water rafting in one of the best places in Europe. It was incredible.

JJ: What kinds of projects are you looking to do in the future?

AL: Just great stories that have a little edge to them. I just love great scripts and inspiring stories. It doesn’t really matter what category it’s in, as long as it’s a great story.

JJ: Did you ever win the scare war between you and Nina Dobrev?

AL: Right now, she’s winning, but it’s only because I’m working on Vikings, and she came to Dublin and scared me. So I’m going to go to Atlanta and gonna get her back, so it’s still on.

JJ: How did she scare you in Dublin?

AL: She had a friend, that also works with me, and she flew out, and she was supposed to come visit but she came and visited a couple days early. I walked into the hotel lobby and she was hiding behind a wall, and she freaked me out. I was really happy to see her, but I was also very angry that she got me.

JJ: Did you get to travel this summer at all for fun?

AL: As much as I can on the weekends. I went to Milan, I went to Paris. But no, I haven’t been able to do a big trip yet. I want to go to Japan soon.

JJ: Who was your first celebrity crush?

AL: My first celebrity crush was probably Jessica Alba, when I was a little kid. And then Tina Fey.

JJ: Was Jessica, like in her Dark Angel days, or before that, after that?

AL: During Into The Blue!

JJ: Do you have any television shows that you’re obsessed with right now?

AL: Yeah, House of Cards. I love True Detective. And Suits.

JJ: What are some of your favorite bands that you are listening to now?

AL: I’m loving country music right now. So I’m listening to like anybody from Jason Aldean, to Brad Paisley, just all those boys. And then band wise, one of my friends is in Foster The People so I like, I love supporting everyone and what not, ’cause I like their music. And what else… Oh! I love The Congos, they’re great, yeah.
