Daniel Radcliffe: The Idea of Having a Soulmate is 'Ridiculous'

Daniel Radcliffe is mesmerizing with those eyes on the September 2014 cover of Essential Homme magazine.

Here’s what the 25-year-old What If star had to share with the mag:

On how he picks his roles: “All of the projects I get involved in begin with a fascination with the story. I can’t work within the mindset of ‘Will this script get me further away from Harry Potter?’ or ‘Will this play make people see me differently?’ because I don’t have any control over any of that. All I can do is make the kind of films that I would want to see as an audience member.”

On soulmates: “The idea that there is one person for everyone is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever heard. With almost seven billion people around the world, how could that even be possible? [In What If] Wallace has a very idealized version of love that is flawed. For me, love is just about being with somebody that makes you incredibly happy and that you want to spend your time with. Someone that, despite how long any day is, their presence immediately lifts your spirits. I don’t believe in fate or destiny.”

On being friends with a girl he had feelings for: “We both admitted to having a thing for each other, but neither of us did anything about it, which I’m actually very happy about because we are still friends today. But it was something that had to be discussed and acknowledged before we could move on.”

Typical cynical young actor that’s too up his own butt

  • Whatever

Mr. Radcliffe, I feel sorry for you.

  • courtney

@Guest you read my mind I was just going to say the same thing. than how would he explain couples that stay together for 50 or more years like Newman & Woodward or Hayden & Saint true love does exist but it takes work

  • Lee

Nice to see a smart, well-adjusted former child star.

  • fabiola

This guy has never experienced love in his whole life.

  • Realistic

He didn’t say he doesn’t believe in love, he just doesn’t believe in soulmates. These couples don’t have to be soulmates to stay together a long time…

  • anon.

@Realistic: Thank you! At least someone didn’t go as far as calling him stuck up. He believes in love just not in a fairy tale ‘meant to be’ scenario. He stated fair points and has a good head on his shoulders.

  • Love The Shoes

He takes himself more seriously than James Franco or the guy who chased the homeless guy for his MicD’s bag. Daniel, you ARE at the end of the day STILL Harry Potter and if not for that, no one would even know who you were. Not trying to be mean but come on, there are couples who fit like a glove on every level and will never find that connection with anyone else. He’s too young to be so jaded.

  • Living in a box

Well, at least we know that he not a romantic person.

  • Jules

It’s what you and your spouse believe in.

  • Ciara

He said he considers himself to be a romantic person. Bet some of you just read the headlines.

  • Missy

    He looks so… manly.
