Julianna Margulies Is Getting Criticized for Her Emmys Speech

Julianna Margulies makes her way around town after meeting up with a friend for lunch on Wednesday (August 27) in New York City.

The 48-year-old actress is fresh off her win at the 2014 Emmy Awards, where she took home the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her work on The Good Wife.

In her acceptance speech, Julianna said it is “a wonderful time for women on television,” but some critics are upset at her for saying it especially after they feel that Sofia Vergara was objectified during a skit earlier in the show.

“Yes, Julianna, there’s a lot to celebrate. But TV still has a long way to go: let’s not confuse ‘good’ with ‘wonderful,’” a reporter at Time wrote.

DO YOU THINK it is fair to criticize Julianna Margulies for her speech?

What she said was fine. No matter what anybody says or does, there will always be people who will b!tch and moan about it.

@Diedre: Totally agree, took the words right out of my mouth!

Leave the woman alone.

I feel that it is way out of context to apply and criticize Julianna’s speech to the segment with Sofia. Especially when women in television right now are definitely making a huge splash and impact in prime-time television (thinking about shows like Scandal, Homeland, not to mention even Law and Order). Women are shifting into the high-power assertive lead roles that typically went to men or were originally written for men.

Says the women who looks like she is starving herself.

It’s not like someone forced Sofia Vergara doing this thing. It was her consious choice, so maybe she’s the one to “blame” here and not Julianna. It’s weird how sometimes people can’t tell the difference between sexism towards women in general from choices that a grown woman do by herself. If Sofia fine and comfortable with this then it is her right and so be it.

This actress is becoming more and more irritating, she the now the new anne hatheway. Success has gone to her head

I’m sure Julianna’s speech was planned well before Sofia did her little spin…

She didn’t say it was a perfect time for women on television, I don’t see what the issue is.

It /is/ a wonderful time for women on television. There are network and cable primetime shows headed by women (and women of color) who are playing solidly written female characters.

Not to say that everything is all fixed now and perfect, or that every woman on TV is playing a well written well developed female character, but women’s representation in television is vastly different and improved from when Julianna Margulies started on ER twenty years ago.

@Maddie: Agreed. Very well said.

As it was Julianna’s fault what Sofia did. I think right now it’s a good period for women in tv, maybe not perfect, but it’s better now than ever and we should celebrate. We shouldn’t stop fighting, but it totally deserves to be said.

Sofia is very aware of her looks and she has stated several times in interviews that she knows its her looks that got her to where she’s at. She has no problem using them or even poking fun at herself. She is very realistic about herself. So to make a big deal about Julianna’s speech and Sofia’s skit is ridiculous. These critics have no argument when the example they use has publicly stated she has no problem making fun of herself or her looks.

This is a joke, yeah? Julianna was quite right, there are so many shows that are awesome who have female leads, and I don’t see how Sofia Vergara’s stunt should change that. Can we stop with the political correctness all the time, please?
